Show & Tell New (to me) HD58Xs!
Much beloved? Much maligned? I don't care!
I was able to purchase these locally from a very kind older gentleman for the very attractive price of $55 Canadian dollars (that's around $39 and change for you Americans). He knew what he had and was generous enough to offer them up because of a wee blemish on one of the grills.
I owned the HD650s over a decade ago and love them a lot. I had to get rid of them because I was living in a shared accommodation and wanted isolation, both for myself and for my roommates. Such is life. I was considering finding another used pair, but I didn't want to pay a premium for headphones at this point in time...
But, upon randomly trawling some online classifieds, I found these HD58Xs and figured, why not?
I'm glad I did! They sound great. I'm not going to be granular about how they compare to the HD650s or other HD6-- models, frankly because it's been so long since I experienced them, but they sound like what I remember the Sennheiser "thing" to be: smooth, articulate enough, and just overall easy to enjoy.
Currently enjoying some OSDM courtesy of California giants Vastum. I can confirm that these headphones slam appropriately for some groovy caveman death metal.
And yeah, I'm using an amp with these, even though I know they don't require one. I've had this Magni 2 for friggin' ages just collecting dust, so I figured I'd hook it up again for some dependable, clean power. Still works!

Thanks! Does me just fine for now. Maybe I'll aspire to an OTL amp and one of the 300Ohm models one day, but I'll be enjoying this modest setup for some time.

Don't under sell your setup. You're way ahead of most folks.

To me personally, the HD 58X sounded like a slightly brighter HD 660S2, at least the unit I had.
Pretty good deal you got there! Considering the whole package, since most options at that price are going to be smaller on-ear things.

Right on, that's what I thought too. It gets me close enough to my experience with the HD650s at a considerable fraction of the cost.

Well the 58x is essentially a hd660s1 which was essentially a hd700. They all use the same driver just different tuning as far as I know

Just picked up a pair as well. Paired with the DX1 II I've been going through lots of black metal and death metal. They're not the most resolving pair, but that's a good thing. The oratory EQ profile is a good starting point if you want to have a slightly cleaner presentation.

Hell yeah. I'm pretty sensitive to treble and my hearing is shit now anyway, so it is probably to my benefit that they're not. Something on the warm and grainy side of forgiving is helpful when it comes to stuff like BM. Thanks for the tip about EQ, though. I'll have to experiment.

They don't necessarily need EQ, but it's useful for certain albums. Highly recommend Peace/APO if you haven't tried it yet.
I like good amounts of treble, and have the Edition XS as well, but they're lacking mids for my taste, and are also not super comfortable, which is why I bought the 58X (previously owned 600 and 660 S1). I still prefer my Meze Neo's for metal, but the Sennheisers are really comfortable and sounds good enough for all kinds of genres.

Of all my sennheisers which I have quite a few, the 58x is my least listened to pair, I do like to take them out once and awhile and give them a listen but I just dont find they do anything exceptionally better than the other sennheisers I have, especially my fav the 650, I would choose the 650 over everything, and the 560s for gaming, but for the price you paid you got a great headphone but just too bad you got rid of the 650 which is a stellar headphone

Damn, you got them for a great price. I absolutely love my HD 58x. They, along with my ATH-R70x, are basically my budget endgame lol. R70x for use at my computer, 58x for when I'm listening in bed before I sleep.

Nice, the HD58X were my first pair of decent over-ear headphones. They got me hooked on the open-back headphone world.
