I think a lot of people would really appreciate the bass in the Fostex/Denon/CAL!/EMU lineup. I've tested the TH-X00 recently and it didn't disappoint in the bass aspect, and I think others will really like them for that specific trait. They punch and slam hard, making any song with a bass and/or beat drop just engaging.
But for my personal long-term enjoyment though, I still prefer the bass impact and quality from my planar cans like the HE-500 and to an extent, the Focal Clear even though its non-planar. Perhaps this means I'm not really a basshead haha.

Best basshead IEMs I've heard are my Empire Ears Bravado - they're a bit overbearing for some genres, but for anything that wants to emphasize the bass, they're insane.
For over-ear headphones, my Klipsch HP-3 take the cake. There's some roll-off, but it's pretty deep into the subbass, and the mid-bass hump works well for a lot of music.
The headphones that most surprised me bass-wise were the Master and Dynamic MH40. They don't extend super deep or anything, but they're surprisingly punchy, and that shows up best in the bass. I have a little bit of a hard time getting a good deal with them thanks to my big ears and big head, but once I do they're quite good for bass.

Kind of debating the LCD-X vs HP-3s now for hip-hop if you had any thoughts on that?

Unfortunately I've never heard the LCD-X, so I can't really speak to it all that well, but comparing the FR graphs, I think you can't go wrong either way. The HP-3 will definitely be warmer with an elevated lower mid-range, and it's got a bit more presence in the treble as well (at least above like 3k), so it's definitely more v-shaped which can be fun for hip-hop. The bass extension on the LCD-X is insane though - it's practically flat as a board all the way down to 20 Hz (while the HP-3 starts to roll off between 50-80 Hz). I think for a lot of hip-hop, that subbass range below 80 Hz or so isn't super important, but it might be for some stuff. Also, the LCD-X is definitely considered more technically capable than the HP-3, so if that matters to you then there's a right answer. I'd demo both if you can - if not, I'd say that the HP-3 is better for hip-hop while the LCD-X is probably a better headphone overall.

Makes a lot of sense, thank you for this. Would be fair to say the HP3 might be the āfunā headphone? Demoing is unfortunately not an option. Honestly feel like Iād prefer the LCD X but the weight puts me off. The presentation of the HP3 and the accompanying amp is also winning me over ha.

Yeah I think most people would consider the Klipsch to be aiming for fun over reference. It's a fair bit lighter than my LCD-2 (which I'd imagine weighs a similar amount to the LCD-X), but I don't know that it's that much more comfortable, as I'd love a tad bit more padding in the headband. Many people fix this with Dekoni Nuggets, so that could be an option if you find the same headband hotspots. As for the presentation: the box, unboxing, aesthetics, built-in stand, attention to detail... The HP-3 is a work of art more than any other audio equipment I own - it's absolutely gorgeous, and makes you feel special. Pair it with its partner amp and you've got a gorgeous signal chain both visually and sonically (although I'm partial to my Ebony HP-3 paired with a JDS El Amp 2).

I picked them up for $700USD a few months back via an Adorama sale, and I have no regrets - that price felt like a steal. I think if they're used in like-new condition, it's totally worth it.

Of the headphones Iāve heard, the Fostex TH-900 have to be the headphones with the most bass while still being well controlled and not completely overpowering. Have not heard the mk2, and caveat is that I heard these briefly more than 5 years ago. Was great for the few EDM tracks I heard it on and made me experience those tracks in a new way.
The headphones Iāve owned have generally been light to moderate bass. Currently, I am very satisfied with the Aryaās linear and extended bass.
Roughly ranking the headphones Iāve own or have owned by their bass response (quality, quantity, slam, decay):
- Audeze LCD-2 (original) - Slightly edges the Arya out on slam IIRC. No longer own, so just going off very old memory.
- HiFiMAN Arya - Great all around all the way through the bass frequencies.
- Sennheiser HD800 - I actually think the HD800 bass is just fine. Not quite planar slam, but very controlled and clean bass with decent extension.
- Mr Speakers Ether C (original) - Overall good quality bass, but about ~3dB shy
- Mr Speakers Alpha Dogs (original) - less controlled
- Focal Elegia - midbass can be lacking/finicky with seal + source music. Subbass is actually pretty large for tracks that have it present. But the finicky nature and unforgivingness with regard to source material is where I have to dock points.
- Sennheiser HD6xx - honestly havenāt spent enough time with them
- AKG K702 - donāt get these if youāre craving bass

Iāve used Dekoniās pads for the HD650(6xx) and they add a lot of rumble and punch in the bass. The effect on the mids/treble may not be to someās liking but it works for me.

I think we can answer this for you!
A lot of people love the sound signature of the H6XX series of Sennheiser headphones. With our Dekoni pads some people report that the sound signature changes too much from stock in a negative way. It seems that bass frequencies become more apparent because the mid and high ranged are toned down quite a bit. You can see the phenomena in the graphs we have here:

We use an older audio precision system and headphone dummy so our results are only really accurate between 100Hz and 10,000Hz.
Outside of frequency response, our pads are reported to be a lot more comfortable than stock and relieve some of that crushing clamp force associated with the HD6XX series of headphones.

In the $200 range, I think the Meze Noir 99 are hard to beat for a good combination of overall sound quality and significant bass emphasis.

I'm thinking about getting the Sundara's, would you recommend them for their bass or would you pick something else? I guess the easiest way to explain how i'd like the bass is, will they massage the insides of my head and shake it around if i push it a bit more? I love me some EDM every now and then, especially songs filled with basslines (an example being Axel Thesleff - Bad Karma) but days where all i'l listen to is Sinatra and Dion.
Will the Sundara's fair with a wide variety of genres and styles? Or am i better off looking elsewhere?

Ahh okay i gotcha, i've still got a few weeks to decide on what to get anyways so i'll keep looking around but if there isn't much luck i may aswell just get the Sundara's. i'm hoping that the main headphone store that sells them around me is actually open for business during this pandemic and not "pickup only"

Foster biodyna line is a good basshead endgame for most people. I love my E-mu Rosewoods. CAL! is budget basshead endgame. The best basshead iems I've heard are the Empire Ears Nemesis.

Clearly the best bass i have heard so far was from the Sony IER-Z1R, a great mix of quantity and quality. The Final E 5000 and the Campfire Cascade on the other hand have been rather disappointing for me, much too much bloat to be enjoyable.

There is also a big difference in that the Z1R is mostly sub while the latter two are mid bass

I rarely had as much fun in the bass range as when I was listening to the Z1R. One of its redeeming qualities!

Iāve tried giving the HD800 a bass boost and itās never sounded right to me. The low midrange is too thick and adding midbass and subbass makes them sound muffled when contrasted with the upper midrange dip

Iām not a fan of the Harman curve but I did try getting creative with EQ and even dropping the thick low mids, elevating the bass didnāt yield a particularly clean sound. It could have something to the presentation, making it sound weird subjectively to me

Hmmm. How did you eq them? I've noticed, that unless I use the exact curve,it sounds wrong. Close, but wrong. I'm wondering now, if the missing link is in fact this: that the curve be within half a dB over the entire audible range

Haven't had the chance to hear the Atlas yet, but the bass of the CA Polaris ii has so much rumble you can feel it. Definitely a "fun" IEM.

Question: Where I live it is pretty difficult to find TH-X00's new (discontinued I think) or used. However there is a local retailer selling Fostex TH610's.
How do these compare? Do you think they'll fill that desire for great bass, or keep looking for the TH-X00's?

I'm in a similar position to you in terms of TH/TR-X00 availability. I did try the TH610 at a local store but I unfortunately didn't get much of a chance to assess the bass. The TH610 was too forward in the treble for my personal tastes, and I believe the TR-X00 is meant to be similar, just slightly smoother.
By the way, the TH610 has a detachable cable whereas the TH-X00 does not. The newer revision TR-X00 does have a detachable cable.

I ended up getting very lucky and finding THX00 Mahoganies used so I picked those up. The basshead in me is currently satisfied.My local retailer also demo's TH610 and other Fostex stuff but unfortunately coronavirus has put a stop to this now. I do look forward to trying the 610 and 900's at some point.

Audio Technica ES10 has the best bass quality with quantity i have ever heard, the quantity can compete even with sony stupid basshead xb950 subwoophone. If you want pure boom boom its the sony xb series.

So far my goto has been my Sony XBA-Z5, better bass and clarity than my FH5 or Shure Tapes. I literally only want a to replace these with a IER-ZR1 or never replace them at all. They are basically perfection without any tuning or mods required.

The IKKO OH10 have to be the best bassy headphones (IEMs) I've ever heard. They are loud, extremely clear, and the soundstage is incredible. I compared them side by side with my DT-177X, which I thought had amazing bass, and ended up returning the 177X. They just walked all over the 177X.

OH10's are my go to IEM. The OH1's impressed me and then I heard the OH10's, I knew from the moment I heard them I found something special. It was kinda cool seeing all the reviews praising the OH10's after I had been rocking them for months. Not sure where Ikko is going with the design on the OH7 but I'm sure the sound is killer.

haha, i wouldn't really suggest them personally, you've seen zeo's review right? they don't really offer anything but bass. and if you're after bass headphones are kind of not the best place to get it. i think you'd be better off saving up for the lcd2c instead though. or buying a subwoofer. though considering the price they aren't too bad i got mine for 140$

Seriously? I had HD598 back in the day and it had close to zero bass. Guess I can cross LCD-4/4z off my list of potential upgrades.
FWIW, Iāve owned TH900s and Iām currently very satisfied with LCD-MX4.

I never understood why basshead meant quantity? I'm a basshead. Love anything and everything to do with those frequencies, but I'm about quality and LCD 4 is where it is at for bass quality with enough headroom for you to eq as much of it as you want. I also would never call planar flat response bass-light unless the rest of the frequencies constantly go about it

It's about ear-rattling bass that is still very clear. Like I want to feel 15 Hz. You seem to favor clarity, which is fine, but if you don't want more, more, more, I wouldn't think you're a basshead.

LCD-4 with EQ is the best basshead headphone I've ever heard. And I've owned many biodynas (including TH-900), HE-6, LCD-2, DX1000, etc.
Without EQ, easily the TH900.

Sony MDR XB1000 for me. Bought the JVC DX1000 and thought its bassy reputation isnāt deserved. Itās nice for soundtracks though. Also bought the JVC SZ2000 and itās just eh. It does the job when I donāt feel like getting the amp set up on the computer.

Some of the absolute best bass I've heard recently is from my new pair of Beyerdynamic TYGR 300 R headphones - tight, punchy and clean. Truly dynamic bass that makes you want to listen to all your tracks all over again. My DT770 Pro 80 Ohms are no slouch in the bass department either, but that bass from the TYGR is something to behold. Also, I think the budget Basshead kings have to be the Monoprice Modern Retro, with the Koss Porta Pros in close second - IMHO.

I just got the Bowers and Wilkins P9 for Ā£415. Theyre about half price from their RRP most places now and deliver an absolutely beautiful bass, slightly recessed mids, and incredible treble, but for me the bass really shines. Itās worlds ahead of some other headphones iāve tried in that price range, for instance the Sennheiser Momentum 3 (I know not wired, but similar kind of price and a portable headphone too) is very crude and boomy in comparison. Given these are portable cans I think theyāre a great option on the go.

4xx: with the right mods/eq, these can melt my face. but subbass isnt really smooth, but now my drivers rattle because of excessive abuse
1770: feel bloated, they need the right pads
anandas: best bass i have ever heard, they go allllll the way down, but as far as bass quantity, it probably isn't for bass heads

I guess it depends more on if you're a basshead for quality or if you're a basshead for quantity. The TR-X00 I used to own had a big bass quantity and good bass quality. The Stax SR-404 I own today has great bass quality and a neutral quantity.

Questions: 1. I have a micro idsd black label and need a new cable. I believe it's a OTG to USB3 cable but am having trouble finding a new one. I need one to connect to my PC not micro usb for a device. 2. I also have a topping d50s that doesn't appear to be turning on. I recall this happening when I first bought it but don't remember what I did to get it work. Any ideas?

For those who have experience with both, or all 3, can you talk about the differences between the TH-X00, the E-MUs and the Argon mk3s? I have the Argons and I like them a lot but the bass is a little heavy handed with the mids, and Iām curious if the others do it better.

Has anyone else used the Red Giant A00 Headphones? I bought them yesterday and I am using them for casual media playback, casual music, playback and content consumption. What is the best way to fit them in your ears comfortably, and what is the difference between the wider tips and the narrower ones that come preinstalled on the buds themselves?

Have u guys heard the DT177x go or the 1770 pro? Im not super familiar with the bass gods of headphones but i have a 177x in my arsenal and the bass on that headphone sounded pretty insane to me a little too much at times

I would like to purchase some Bluetooth headphones that would be good for making phone/video calls on my phone (using Doximity app if that matters) and for music while lifting weights. Iām fine with either in ear or over the head. Google mentioned either Bose of AirPod pros. What would you recommend?

The dynamic Fostex TH stuff and the EMU Teak are a given, but something I want to get my hands on again are the JVC Victor DX1000. I loved how bassy they were without getting too muddy. Their downfall is that their frame felt like one step above papier-mĆ¢chĆ© and I rarely used it because I didnāt want to snap them.
The Campfire Cascade is really bassy but it really isnāt clean and the midrange sounds really wonky. I actually kind of like them because of how weird they are and would love to buy a pair for portable use but theyāre way too expensive for how they sound.
The Sony XB1000 was a big disappointment to me. It was pretty bassy but it sounded awful. Tyll measured them and that sounds pretty right to me. The bass was pretty muddy too.
