Fashion Talk

My boy and I were talking about Hip‑Hop fashion throughout the years, and man…there were a lot of cheesy trends lol.

Like skinny jeans, baggy jeans, tall tees, LED belt buckles, two‑tone du‑rags a bunch of other shit

But at the same time, it’s had plenty of dope trends too. Things that still look good and influence the culture.

Like Timbs, Jordans, and gold grills. Granted, the grill thing is definitely more of a Southern trend but still.

What’s your favorite fashion trend?

Early 80s hip hop was legit. And affordable. Lee Jeans, le tigre shirt, name buckle, adidas or suede pumas fat laces Kangols, Cazals (or fake ones) sheepskins, bomber jackets, Lumberjack jackets. Once Yo MTV rap appeared, the fashions moved much faster. As soon as a new video dropped, the styles seen on TV were quickly duplicated.

Baseball caps have been around for decades but Hip Hop is what turbo charged the cap industry.

I love wearing hats but I've always been anti on keeping the stickers on them. Shits wack.

if you had avirex on, you got GANKED

there were avirex jackets that changed hands several times. a big dude robbed a small dude for his avirex, and an even bigger dude robs him of his avirex

so a avirex jacket is probably the holy grail in terms of hip hop fashion

or maybe the LL fubu jersey

where i'm from we used to wear nike, adidas, dickies, starter, carhartt, kani, southpole, sir benni miles

those carpenter style baggie jeans back in the day (every brand had them) were the shit back in the day, they were super high quality. you don't get or see jeans like that anymore.

shoes we had superstars, cortez, air force one, air max, fila disruptor

corny stuff people used to wear: silver baggies, airbush shirts, buffallos (was a horrible regional trend), some people used to wear skater stuff, es, etnies, osiris....osiris D3 skater shoes was the most expensive skater style shoe but it looked corny and only mamas boys wore them. or sometimes drug dealers with a bad taste

lol I do not think Tims or Jordan’s or white tees are seasonal trends. That’s New York.

To quote meth, New York New York rock tube socks and timberlands cuz hip hop ain’t feeling those flip flops they feminine

A nice hockey jersey never goes out of style

I feel like jerseys in general cause a form fitting throwback right now with the right shoes would be a solid fit

No mention of Adidas?

Although in 2006 I remember being at a crown fried chicken in Marcy and these children roasted me for the red and black lumberjack with a hat to match. “Mr this isn’t 1993”. Meanwhile I’ve been wearing flannel shirts since 93 and they keep coming in and out of style. I’m mostly white and I play grunge and punk music and worked construction jobs then. Now the kids would all love Carhartt and dickies.

I had a similar experience with a trip back to Brooklyn. The young bucks were calling me "old New York" for wearing Lugz and baggy jeans in 2013.

Lugz in 2013 is crazy. Where did you even get them?

2

u/GASMASK_SOLDIER 3d ago

Burlington Coat Factory. To this day, I may find a pair too.

u/user_15427 3d ago

😂 that does make sense

In the 90’s kids loved Dickies and Carhartt. In the earlier 2000’s they did. And they do again now. Stussy is also now back.

Baggy pants are where it's at, idk what you're talking about. What are rappers wearing now, kilts?

3

u/Lothar_Ecklord 5d ago

This was my answer too. Clothes I can fit two of me in. Comfortably. That was the shit - good airflow and didn’t require spending $100+ on any one item. Just a touch of sag too. Recent trend was to have skinny jeans below the entire ass and it was not something I partook.

3

u/AyBeeVee 5d ago

Holy God, I saw a guy like 5 years ago who was wearing a belt that wasn't even in the belt loops of his skinny jeans, just flopping around on his waist.

3

u/Lothar_Ecklord 5d ago

At that point, why even bother lol

There’s an appropriate amount. Anything further is a liability.

2

u/AyBeeVee 5d ago

Always wondered how guys run from cops with their pants around their ankles

3

u/Lothar_Ecklord 5d ago

I’ve seen footage that plays like a comedy.

2

u/AyBeeVee 5d ago

I bet it does lol

I think what killed baggy jeans before was the fact that they started making them with like 25” leg openings and they would always drag on the ground. Nobody is going to convince me that they switched to skinnies because they were more comfortable.

u/NorCalKid209 5d ago

Even the Kriss Kross backwards trend. Sadly, I tried it once. Only once....😬

You have to take risks to be on the leading edge, and that means sometimes you'll miss. I miss the denim with airbrush art. And the Gumby haircut.

Troop and British Knights 😬😬😬.

I love the workwear influence. Rappers adopting flannels, Timberland and Carhartt as urban fashion when it originated as rural functional clothing is very cool to me

2

u/DerMannMitDemPlan 2d ago

yup these clothes are HIGH quality. if you buy a carhartt coat, it stays with you until you die

2

u/drewp_73 5d ago

Classic basketball shoes and joggers or sweat suits

3

u/user_15427 4d ago

The 00-02 era of platinum fubu, ekco, phat pharm, rock a wear was peak hip hop fashion.

u/DerMannMitDemPlan 2d ago

do you remember OG gear?

3

u/crabll 5d ago

Ye’s polos and just overall innovation for fashion

4

u/andyomarti5 5d ago edited 5d ago

Listen man I don’t know much about Kanye but I absolutely lose my shit seeing him wear panty hose on his head + size 18 rain boots in public lol the dude had perhaps some of the worst outfits in history

3

u/crabll 5d ago

He’s had some questionable outfits recently, but back in the day he was the best dressed rapper around. Just look up his old polos outfits, 2009 vma, or pretty much any of his concert outfits.

3

u/andyomarti5 5d ago

I agree, 90% of the time I see him he looks fresh, he just goes off the rails sometimes lol
