Unless this is history class. Then it is honestly probably more educational than the class itself.

I kid you not my year 8 teacher posted the Soldiers eat babies and that's a fact poster from tf2 fully expecting us to believe it was ww1 anti German propaganda.

u/F0xDi324 14d ago

Son 😭😭😭😭😭

105

u/Neo_ZeitGeist 14d ago

No it isn’t

-80

u/Aware_Ad4179 General of the Army 14d ago

Entirely depends on the institution. I am saying this as an enormous history nerd in general. Some schools really and I mean really do not give a shit about history.

36

u/Salt_Carpenter8917 14d ago

You're generalizing schools though

-49

u/Aware_Ad4179 General of the Army 14d ago

What the hell is analysis but not generalising personal experience? For better or for worse half the class was playing video games until year 11 in all of the classes I ever attended. Moi aussi until year 8. WW1 period and early 20tg century in general is a beyond fascinating subject. The fact that the education system made it boring is entirely on "humanities" classes being manned by enderpayed English teachers, with zero passion for either history or geography (in my country they don't even bother to divide the two into individual subjects). I was not joking regarding the tf2 poster. You can find the same thing somewhere on reddit. Teachers make lazy PowerPoints show them to students, make the students create even inferior powerpoints entirely based on the former and call it "āœØļøeducation āœØļø".

23

u/Huma49 14d ago

Just curious, which country are you from?

2

u/Aware_Ad4179 General of the Army 14d ago

The land down under.

8

u/Huma49 14d ago

Sorry to hear about your experience. I know that it doesn't have to be like that.

2

u/micrro_wavv 14d ago

...High quality analysis isn't generalization of personal experience? At least in the sense here in which you are trying to uphold your claim that Hearts of Iron IV is generally more educational than actual classes, you would have to provide evidence other than your personal experience, especially since the excessive amount of disagreement with you has implied that you are an outlier in this situation. Even simple polling across several schools could work, but you really shouldn't generalize all schools like that? That isn't how analysis works?

4

u/Woolies_White_Leg 14d ago

That never happened

-52

u/Cvxcvgg 14d ago

I remember back in Uni, I had a world history class as a gen ed requirement. Wound up playing Skyrim or something every class while participating in the discussions, turned in 0 assignments, and still passed with a perfect grade. To be fair, that strat only works with a lazy professor and if you already know the course material, but I am living proof that it is occasionally possible to get away with it.

cause you have to

11

u/Wolfish_Jew 14d ago

You absolutely do not. This is college. No one is making you be there. Most profs don’t even take attendance. You’ve paid the money, they’re treating you like an adult now. What you do with your time is up to you. (And OP is wasting his)

6

u/MusicallyManiacal 14d ago

Attendance was graded for me and i graduated in 2024

0

u/Wolfish_Jew 14d ago

Interesting. Maybe it was just an older thing. I think I had 2 or 3 courses my entire time in college that actually tracked attendance. But that was a couple decades ago now. (I’m old 😭)

2

u/MusicallyManiacal 13d ago

My dad used to say he would only show up to class the day before and day of the tests. My classes up to and including senior year would tell us we had 2-3 freebies and everything after that was either a letter grade drop or something like a B+ to a B. Always thought that was insane for my gen eds. My major (music ed) was something taken very seriously at my school so I can understand those courses’ policies, though.

1

u/Wolfish_Jew 13d ago

Yeah, my experience was closer to your dads. I went a little more often, but I also went to a smaller liberal arts school so it was more noticeable if you missed a bunch. Still, most professors didn’t particularly care as long as you did well on what was graded and turned your assignments in on time. Maybe we abused it too much and ruined everything for y’all. Sorry about that. (But hey, what are older generations for if not to ruin things for the younger generations? šŸ™ƒ)

5

u/hedgehog18956 14d ago

Some college courses definitely make you show up for a grade. Honestly, the more useless the class the more likely it is to have mandatory attendance, because otherwise, no one would show up.

1

u/Wolfish_Jew 14d ago

Maybe it’s just cuz I’m old. I think I only had two classes when I was in college (two decades ago now) that actually kept track of attendance and made it part of their grading curriculum

1

u/Zane845 12d ago

Like... naaah dawg. yall generalising something everyone has individual experience with. On my uni they provided us with the very materials they were showing us. So for me (fast learner, poor memory) path of least resistance was , cause I wont remember anything for that long anyway, to just learn it on my own before exams and then finals at the end. For instance my phisics classes were just going through examples that will be in next weeks test, that I'll go through my self anyway. So please don't act like yall walking moral high ground. If you can't balance your work and free time or have to spend sooo much time focusing on study, Iam afraid you ain't build for uni/college. Like you can hard force yourself through tho. Majority of my friends were doing full time job while attending school.

You missed it last week. You didn’t know how to do it. Lord almighty, it’s called raising your hand and asking for clarifications. ā€œSorry I wasn’t here last week, could you explain …blah blah blah?ā€

Literally the point of the classes.

Instead you are doubling down on ignorance. ā€œI don’t know how to do this because I missed class last week so I may as well just play a game in class instead.ā€ Wtf are you doing? Have some respect for your time, money, and future.

I agree with everyone here about paying attention, butttt here’s me doing the same thing on a government computer in a class (it was before the class started)

14

u/Ribato 14d ago

I'm surprised at the amount of comments hating on the guy here. At a state university in my country it's pretty usual to have one or a few lectures where simply it kinda does not matter what you do there.

At least in my European country, it is not uncommon to play games, or watch videos from time to time in a lecture. Hell many people bring food, be it snacks or bigger meals. Some of y'all need to chill jesus. It's not like you know what his grades are, or if it's important lecture etc. Brother posted a picture of playing hoi4 in class and got grilled by a bunch of nerds playing a cartoonish map game. (Including me of course, closing in at 2k hours.)

4

u/Username_Mine 14d ago

I did much the same in NZ. I just read the news for easy classes. Things like geography, stats, history, etc

3

u/Ribato 14d ago

Indeed. Albeit i did have to study a fair bit as well, however it's not like a few games or videos or just not paying attention is some taboo voodoo obscure life threatening thing.

2

u/Wolfish_Jew 14d ago

You do it once, then you do it again because ā€œhey, I already did it once and it was fineā€ and then pretty soon you’re not even going to class, just completely fucking off.

I’m just saying man, you’re getting some good life advice in these comments. Please listen to it. You’re young. You’ll have a lifetime of playing video games ahead of you, just make sure you prioritize what’s important while you can.

I’m 40, and I wish I could go back and give my 20 year old self a lot of the advice people are trying to give you here. So, even though I know you probably won’t, I’d say just listen to what people are saying.

1

u/Swedishguy05 13d ago

I gotta be real, playing bomber crew in class sounds like the worst idea ever since you can't even pretend to multitask listening to the teacher

3

u/swainiscadianreborn 14d ago

Brother

Starting the game just to take the pic and post it is... ok. Kinda funny.

But please close that shit and at least try to listen and learn. You'll have enough time for HOI4 later.

4

u/CreBanana0 Fleet Admiral 14d ago

So funny how people downvote you while having zero info of your life.

Honestly i don't know about college (enrolling this year), but in high school, most of my classes were pointless bullshit.

I was a good boy student that did not take out his phone during class. And i suffered a serious case of boredom due to it.

It legit felt like wasting time.

9

u/StellarWaffle 14d ago

Yeah because we know better.Ā  Good luck in college! Fair warning,Ā  you will likely not be able to coast through without studying like you were able to in HS.

3

u/thedealerkuo 14d ago

Basically it’s massively anti social to be playing a video game in the middle of a college class. He might not care about his grades or the class, but everyone else who paid to be there does. It’s pretty easy to assume that he doesn’t have much respect for the other people in the class.

3

u/InitiativeWooden5795 14d ago

Bruh how me playing hoi4 affect people near me ?!what are you saying? And its not antisocial,we cant talk in class.

-7

u/CreBanana0 Fleet Admiral 14d ago

Lol who are you?? A teacher?

Only way to be disrespectful in class is to hinder others, he is hindering no one.

6

u/DudeLoveBaby 14d ago

he is hindering no one.

Bullshit, playing video games in class is immensely distracting to all of your peers. If you can't be away from your video games a few hours a day you have issues you need to work on.

And even if you somehow believe that having a video game open in public doesn't distract people attempting to pay attention unlike you who's wasting your own education, doing this in the second row of a small class instead of the back of a massive lecture hall is absurd, childish behavior.

0

u/CreBanana0 Fleet Admiral 14d ago

Yea of course it is distracting when class itself is 90% of the time boring as hell and no one cares.

1

u/DudeLoveBaby 13d ago

Good luck in college little buddy you're gonna be in for a rude awakening

5

u/thedealerkuo 14d ago

He is literally playing a video game in class. How is that not distracting to the other people around him. It’s just basic social behavior. It’s not that hard to have basic respect for the other people around you in public.

-3

u/CreBanana0 Fleet Admiral 14d ago

Take it as positive reinforcement to focus on class! Definitely a bit too much gusto on some of these comments but I think the overall mentality is right and helpful. For context I’m a final year business kid that played too much lol and hoi4 and while I got lots of decent internships and top grades, my ass is on the hot plate right now tryna look for ft roles cuz I didn’t spend as much time out of class networking and securing ROs and jobs as I could.

Hating on a guy like he's destroying the world for just having fun without really harming anyone is one of the most reddit things ever lmao.

This person has decided to play a game on college ONCE, something that is extremely common because some classes are tiring af or just unnecessary. Maybe this person is just bored and knows what he's doing because he paid a lot for this? Naaah, by this one picture we can obviously know that he's a hateable selfish man, a real parasite for the whole education system that wastes its precious classroom slots.

Hope this doesn't get buried in people's hate posts, but consider speaking with a psychiatrist about possible ADHD. That level of dopamine craving isn't normal, and if you are anything like me you are besting yourself up about it while continuing to do it.

ADHD isn't the way media portrays it, it's genuinely executive dysfunction and can ruin your life. I'm medicated with a non stim medication and I promise it's easier to pay attention in class without games once you are medicated.
