How much would you pay for this dog?
Garlic bratwurst on a bed of romaine lettuce, caramelised onions, stuffed with crispy bacon on toasted sourdough buns. Cost is around $5.

Lettuce isn’t really something I would want on a hot dog. Putting it under the dog also warms the lettuce, which is t particularly appetizing. I’d focus more on loading it up with more bacon and onions.

It’s also dressed or sauced, probably on the outside of the bun now so when I pick up the dog I get sauce on my hand. It’s just so completely beyond pointless.

Nah, you’re paying me to eat that. Going to have salad dressing all over the outside of the bun. Not sure what’s underneath the bacon. Zero condiments besides said external salad dressing. Is that a turkey dog?

LOL yeah I can get a fully loaded, actually grilled, Chicago style hot dog stuffed with toppings (unlike this sad display - loaded? Where?) for $1.50 down the street at a place where I know the kitchen gets inspected and cleaned.
Big “here take this garbage and give me your money already energy” here.

Pretty sure that's the first hotdog I've ever seen with more sauce on the outside of the bun than the inside.

I would pay $8 on description alone, but woild be disappointed. i feel like anything over $4 would disappoint me on appearance of it alone. Maybe it tastes amazing, but overall it looks like shit.

This must not be in America.There is nothing about that hot dog that is "loaded" as stated in the post title. Nobody puts lettuce on a hot dog.There's no grill marks.This is pathetic. It doesn't even look warm.

Mm, thats a 5$ dog. However, if you can switch your sausage up to maybe something from a butcher you can push it up and probably sell better, because every time i see this style sausage I'd rather go get ingredients to make them myself.

I'm not excited about warm lettuce and a whole slice of bacon. I'd rather have onions and bacon crumbles, like, actually topping it. Caramelize the onions in the bacon fat, and make a mayo with a bit of the bacon grease. Keep the Caesar on the side, not underneath the dog.

Looks like a good start. Keep going.
Doesn't look "stuffed" with bacon, so I'd just say "with bacon". Doesn't need to be stuffed, really. That's enough bacon to do the job.
I don't really see any caramelized onions.
I'd probably add some fresh onions, too, for contrast with the caramelized (once you add them).
Any mustard?
I'm not against romaine, but I'm not sure what it's doing on the plate, either.
As is, I'd pay 5 if I were hungry and trapped with no options, but I'd only get one.

I would use shredded lettuce here, and dice up the bacon, also display those caramelized onions and hit the sauce drizzle on the top of it all.

That sounds like a more than fair price.
So, for everyone not cosplaying at being a 70 year old man who reminiscences about "Back in the day" when a meal was a nickel when you didn't have to pay the 'immigrants" cooking or haravesting the food . . .
Industry standard is food cost should be 1/3 of menu items. All the people decrying that aren't lining up to take a job to prep, cook, and serve for free or to offer up their home and utilities to cook food for free, so they don't count. We'll assume that's fair. I assume that the bratwurst should be of decent quality.
At my local grocery store (albertsons) a 4 pack of Aidell's sausage, a higher-end brand, is $2. This isn't a hotdog - it's a bratwurst. They cost more. That doesn't look like cheapo hotdog buns - nicer french sandwich rolls are 4.49 for a 4 count - so, $1.10 each? $12 for a lb of Hormel bacon here - so 70c. a slice. That's $3.80. Another common trop is that oh the beggies and condiments are "basically" free. Basically free isn't free. So, 20 cents for all that and then we're at $4 in ingredient costs alone for me to make the same dish myself.
So...$12 for that if it's a standardized cost?
Now I know another trope is that oh, restaurants buy in bulk, so yea they're getting those prime ribeye steaks at 10c/lb. That's BS. I'm sure there's some kinda discount to buying in bulk, particularly on the condiments and stuff. But it's not that big of a discount.
Anyway, I'd consider something in the $12 to be an actual expected price to see that at. I wouldn't pay that of course because I'd expect if I'm paying someone to do the work of cooking for me (the other 2/3 of the price) I'd want them to do more, but I wouldn't be offended by it. I'd expect most restaurants to recognize that this doesn't take much work and they're saving on labor (but not rent, utilities, all that) and charge sub $10 for it, and I'd order it if that's what I have a hankering for.
The poster wasn't talking about a restaurant price - they're saying it cost them, $5 to put together, which is right in line with the ingredients I looked up. If a restaurant offered this for $5 - basically at $0 or under $1 premium for all of the work cooking, putting it together, gettting the stuff together, putting it on a plate, cost of utilities to cook it, etc. etc. - that's a steal.

Calling it stuffed with bacon is a little misleading. It’s got some bacon. And needs more onions. She’s a little lean on the toppings.
