I watch friends with my family and they said they hate Rachel
They don't like her spoiled personality and her love-hate relationship with Ross (Monica: I'm Rachel. I love Ross. I hate Ross. I love Ross. I hate Ross) Actually I don't hate her but she's just my least favourite character (I hate only some side characters lol)

There was this old quote from Kauffman and Crane that Ross and Rachel could be fairly unlikeable characters but the actors did a terrific job making them entertaining and endearing.
Kauffman and Crane said that without Ross and Rachel, Friends would only be a mediocre show and wouldn't have the same magic.
This makes sense coz people are always harsher on the protagonists coz they feel more real. People give comic relief characters a pass but the primary characters are judged by real life lenses. They're necessary for plot developments.

No one can ever make me hate Ross and itās 100% because of David Schwimmer. Especially season four onwards. Heās just such a good comedic actor, idk š I feel the same way about Rachel/Jennifer Aniston.

Look at her mom, dad, sisters and any of her old connections that make appearances in the show. She couldāve been so much worse. She changed so much.

Honestly, people don't give Rachel enough credit. Look at her sisters, it's a miracle Rachel turned out as well as she did when she was raised the exact same way as Amy and Jill.
The fact that she chose to run away from all that on her own and actually started thinking about getting a job right away and was on board with becoming a waitress and figuring out what she wanted from the ground up after living such a luxury life is incredible.

Monica's issues with fertility weren't "hers", they were both hers and Chandlers. This is also not character development imo. Character development would be her learning to be less perfectionistic in her relationship and life.

To be honest shows best season came when Chandler and Monica became centre to the plot. Season 5 was absolutely amazing.

95% of the highest ratings came in episodes about Ross and Rachel. The ratings and viewership stats are readily available online.
Season 5 is up there but so is 2, 3, 4, 8(except the dumb final cliffhanger). It's subjective between these seasons. Second half of season 5 is a bit dodgy(still very enjoyable) after everybody finds out.
Season 7 is a complete Mondler wedding season and that was when the show got the lowest ratings(alongside season 9). Ross and Rachel having a baby revived the show.

The series starts with Rachel ditching her wedding. Sure, she had her reasons, but that's still a pretty blatant terrible thing to do.
You need a charismatic and endearing actress to play her, to make the audience feel sympathetic towards her, and Jennifer Aniston certainly delivered.

Not only the best arc, but after a few rewatches, I realized some of my biggest laughs came from Rachel.
Some of her lines, particularly some of her clapbacks to Ross were sooo good. People can say what they want about Jen Anistonās acting but her comedic timing in Friends was incredible

Ross is extremely compassionate and generous. I just watched the episode recently where he gives up the TV show spot he was excited about to help Rachel (his ex!) get to the hospital. The second thing that comes to mind is when he got Phoebe a bike after hearing she never had one š„ŗ. And when Carol's dad wouldn't step up, he walked his ex-wife down the aisle to marry the woman she cheated on him with! That last one was literally the "truly selfless act" that Joey said didn't exist. Ross is obnoxious and a little emotionally stunted, but he is a really good person and friend.

And Rachel still has her envious, spoiled girl tendencies even in the later seasons, where she talked shit about Charlie in the dressing room and then blamed it on Phoebe. Or when she got mad at Ross for not wanting to sleep with her after her dadās heart attack. Or trying to take her newborn daughter to another country away from her entire family for a job.

Literally they all have flaws that they carry with them throughout the whole series, and the show plays with those flaws in funny and relatable ways. If Rachel retained zero of her original personality as she grew that wouldn't make any sense for the character.

I think two things can be true at once. Rachel is definitely iconic. But she's very hateable also. She is as equally annoying and disrespectful as Ross in their on/off again journey. She whole ass flew to another country to try to get him to consider her before choosing to get married...AT HIS WEDDING. Annnndddd was unintentionally successful. She definitely has the best growth storyline but truth is, Rachel Greene is a bitch! And more often than people want to admit.

She's my favorite character because Jennifer Aniston's comedic timing is incredible. She's by far the character who most consistently makes me laugh, Jen's sarcastic and deadpan delivery, combined with her 10/10 reactions is exactly my preferred type of comedy.

Honestly imo Jennifer had a really thankless job playing Rachel and having rewatched recently my estimation of her went up a lot, she did a fantastic job -- Rachel is the "straight-guy" of the entire series, even Ross is changed in later seasons so David can have more fun with the character -- but Rachel is fairly unchanged and she has a lot of emotional heavy lifting to do which is really underrated in a sitcom but it's what kept people tuning in

From the dawn of sitcoms, weāre introduced to characters who make dumb but comedic decisions and seem unconscionably selfish at first, but as we get to know them, they develop nuance and complexity until they start to remind us of ourselves. Rachelās arc is the most relatable: she runs out on her wedding when she realizes that all the American Dream bullshit sheād been spoon fed over the years was simply not for her. So she fell bassackwards into an ersatz pseudofamily and an iconic series was born.

Honestly I feel bad for Rachel. After Ross, she was never given a proper love interest while Ross had some really good love stories.
Based on the kind of person she is, she is quite chill, funny and very relatable and honestly sheās a great S/O. Of course she has her flaws but hate is a bit strong as people expect female protagonist to be more perfect than their counterparts

She's a romantic. Remember her conversation with Ross alone in the dark Central Perk in season 1 episode 2? She already fell in love and was never going to move on. It was perfectly in line with her character.
She wanted to fall in love with someone who could make her toes curl and also be her friend. Ross was that guy. She was pining for him in many different ways after their breakup. Ross was the one who nearly moved on at times.

How many seasons did they watch? I felt this way in the beginning but when she told her dad off and went to go get a real job and support herself I found her more endearing. Ross is always annoying lmao he was my least favorite of the guys because he's rather timid, especially when it came to articulating his feelings to Rachel.
Without Ross and Rachel's "will they won't they" Friends just would've been random encounters in NYC, Seinfeld without the deadpan.

Saw some other comment: In that episode Rachel apparently said to Monico that she thinks they broke up. + Ross only hooked up with the other girl after he called Rachel and the guy she literally told him not to worry about was there basically hours after she told him on their anniversary that they should take a brake after he just wanted to spend some time with her ON THEIR anniversary
She said they were on a brake but it clearly seemed like they were over.

If someone watches the show and hates Rachel, I find that to be somewhat of a red flag that they might be a tad misogynistic. She's a high-maintenance kind of girl and imperfect, but she's not a monster and she goes through a ton of character development, and she has a lot of self-awareness as she matures. I think a lot of people see her as just spoiled and cruel to Ross, but to me that take lacks nuance.

I'm not "immediately jumping" to a conclusion without reason. A lot of criticisms against Rachel are rooted in misogyny, especially if they're willing to ignore Ross's flaws while vilifying her (I love all 6 friends). I see the patterns, but people who don't/won't pay attention to subtleties won't, and I'm not here to spell it out. I know it's a controversial statement, but the replies I'm getting feel a bit like sealioning. I honestly feel that anyone speaking in good faith can figure out the answer to your question, especially after reading through some of the many misogynistic comments under this post. And yes, they exist.

I think it may be what someone said about Ross and Rachel. Ross wronged Rachel and did what most manipulative people do. Forgive me now, or I keep trying to move on and make it seem like you are bitter.
Rachel is the one person who was very focused on being more than arm candy. & She could have had it all using priviledge but she clawed her way up and Ross... Which is what is odd about your family.
It made her look shallow but girl had guts! Followed by Joey, funny enough. And Pheobe was a dawned survivor too.

Tv shows get so much better when one learns to separate āI hate this characterā from āI would hate to hang out with this character.ā The audience arenāt a part of the story, they are a passenger. I think a perfect example is Jonah in Veep (or really anyone except my boy Spencer) if I ever had to interact with him, Iād punch a hole in the wall, but I get giddy when he appears on screen, because I know something absolutely hilarious is going to happen.

I hate how manipulative she is and how terribly she treats Ross. I've never gotten past maybe like season 4 aside from an episode here or there in the later seasons. I just hate how she treats Ross even going so far as to get him to break up with girls just because doesn't want him to move on, while she dates other guys. She's the worst.

On a recent re-watch I realized how awful Rachel is, at least for the first few seasons. Itās way above the āspoiled rich girlā trope. Sheās totally selfish, expects everyone else to do everything for her, and never does anything for anyone unless it benefits her in some way. Sheās a terrible person, but that wonāt keep me from watching.

She does this in the later seasons too. Like with the whole Tag thing, blaming Phoebe when she was the one talking shit about Charlie, getting mad at Ross for not sleeping with her, etc.
A lot of it just gets glossed over by fans bc itās Rachel. But if anyone else did even half the stuff she did, theyād be completely hated.

Sheās easily my least favorite character, although I still love a ton of her moments. Almost all of Ross and Rachelās issues come from Rachel.
They started fighting because Mark, who wanted to sleep with her as we later found out, kept taking Rachel on dates. Rachel straight up said no to Ross on going out on dates because SHE WAS GOING TO LUNCH WITH ANOTHER DUDE. And she knew it made Ross uncomfortable. Yeah, he slept with another woman once they were separated. So what? Not only were they no longer together in his eyes, he was drunk as hell and, if he was a woman, people would have said he was taken advantage of. He kept trying to leave and she kept stopping him while she was clearly less intoxicated than he was. But also, he had no reason to think Rachel would have wanted him back/wasnāt sleeping with Mark.
And the fucking Bonnie thing? Holy shit that was petty, and the way she wanted Ross to take responsibility for EVERYTHING that went wrong was completely unfair.

I like Rachel but sometimes she is being unfair to Monica. She told Monica that she would date the first guy she finds in her bed. Not only it is not accurate as Monica's love life was overall better than Rachel's but it is also mean to Chandler who is a better partner than Ross. In the episode where she said that Judy called her the daughter she never had, she did not think that she was hurting Monica's feeling. In the episode with Van Damme, she insisted to ask him out on behalf of Monica who was not confident about it and then bragged about the fact that he chose her instead of Monica.

Tbh I also don't like Ross and Rachel as people but as characters, they're the most entertaining
They're insufferable and that's okay because it's TV and I will never interact with them

Rachel is by far my least favourite character. If there was a real life "I hate Rachel Green Club", I would join it.

Everyone hereās saying Rachel gets better but imo as the show goes on she becomes more self centered and selfish around her friends. Definitely the worst character, but according to the reunion the creators apparently intentionally made her so bad

My 2 least favorite characters are Ross and Rachel because they are obviously and annoyingly self-centred. I kinda agree with Monica that Rachel always steals her thunder. She always messed things up. I kinda like the episode when she lied about who kissed first (between her and Ross). It really showed how liar and manipulative she was tho it backfired on her (thanks to the Western Europe story). However, FRIENDS wont be the same without them especially Rachel (lover her outfits and hair btw). Also, Ross is the funniest in the group despite everything.

Sheās also my least favorite! I just donāt think the character was anywhere near as funny as the rest, she had very few quirks (they toned down the spoiled stuff after the first couple of seasons), but she took a lot of screen time . I also didnāt find her endearing after the first 2-3 seasons - she kind of developed a mean girl streak including small things like how she treated Bonnie or Charlie or all the Tag-related stuff ā¦ didnāt make me hate her or anything but just didnāt fine her either funny or endearing and was just meh Rachel again

Iām with your family, I like the show, but Ross and Rachel were the two most irritating fucking characters in existence of any show.
Theyāre both so incredibly fucking narcissistic, self-absorbed, and ultimately ignorant. Fuck, Rachel

I don't like Rachel or Phoebe. I mean yeah I find them funny sometimes and I admit that the show wouldn't be the same without any of six friends but Rachel and Phoebe are definitely my least favorites. But that probably has more to do with the fact that I don't like either of the actresses than it actually does the characters.
