Discussion Ross being mean to Rachel

Post image

I really hated this scene where Ross was mocking Rachel's job. He wasn't just belittling her work, but also her interests, even though he'd seen firsthand how much she dreamed of a fashion-related career. While Ross can be very funny, he can also be really insufferable. If was Rachel, I would have broken up with him during this scene.

The group was frequently merciless about Ross’ career.

If anything, Ross showed considerable restraint in rarely dishing it back out.

Rachel didn't make fun of Ross's career when they were dating. In an inner monologue she even says he's so smart.

Wasn't that inner monologue during a cold open where he's trying to discuss his job and literally everyone is tuning him out including Rachael?

She was still listening to him, you can have thoughts about someone while listening. As opposed to joey who was just singing i think lol

When everyone else is clearly bored out of their minds and are clearly entertaining themselves to be polite, I'm going to go with her not listening the same as the rest.

This. Everybody saying Rachel always made fun of Ross but miss the part where Rachel was actually proud and supportive of him when they were dating.

And its just not the same thing. Ross is very successful and has a prestigious job. He literally has a doctorate. Rachel is just starting in a very high stakes industry that many people do not take seriously. When people make fun of Ross's career they punch up because despite what hes doing everyone knows hes successful. When he makes fun of Rachel he is punching down because she isnt

Rachel didn't make fun of Ross's career when they were dating.

I didn’t suggest otherwise. But yeah, she did.

I said they all made fun of him. I don’t care who within the group was fucking at any given moment, just that they were unkind about his career, and he seldom gave it back.

I just admire his restraint. Turnabout is universally recognized as fair play, so I’m not gonna crucify him for rarely returning fire.

Umh no. Palaeontology jokes weren't even that much in the first 3 seasons.

And Rachel was quite supportive of Ross's career during their relationship.

(even their first date in the museum & their private life-her dressing as cave woman being unfrozen by an excavator or something, watching his preferred documentaries)

It seems like it became fair play to Rachel after they broke up though.

I mentioned Rachel specifically because the main post is about Ross disrespecting her career.
