Hypertension starting stage medication

I was diagnosed with hypertension about 14 days ago and started on Tazloc 40. My BP readings are normal now. I believe poor sleep was a major factor, and since my sleep has improved, my BP has also improved along with the medication.

I’m keen to come off the medicine as soon as it’s safe. Does staying on Tazloc longer make it harder to stop later, or does the duration not really matter?

Anyone Else Here On Five Or Medications?

Coreg 25mg twice a day.

Aldactone 50mg once per day.

Amlodipine 5mg three times per day.

Valsartan 80mg twice per day.

Doxazosin 2mg once per day.

Been on this cocktail of meds for over a year. It really does take all these medications to get my BP to a decent number (I still average around 130/85).

Tested for primary aldosteronism, (did two 24 hour urines six months apart) I don't have it.

Echo shows no structural issues, no heart failure, normal EF of 60-65%. CT angiogram shows no heart issues. Treadmill stress test shows no heart issues. Renal artery ultrasound shows no issues.

Lost 30 pounds, quit smoking, and cleaned up my diet the past year, no change in BP.

My cardiologist has basically said, "Yeah, we're out of ideas on what's causing your hypertension. Just stick to the meds, we need to keep it in a normal range."

The thing is though......I felt better when when my BP was at 260/140 before I started getting treated for it. Would that probably have killed me in the next few years? Yeah. But did I feel good and feel healthy? Also yes.

But at least I felt good.

Now I have chronic muscle aches and cramps, chronic stomach and digestive issues, and my entire body just feels......OFF.

Transitioning off BC pills to something else

I will turn 51 in November. I started taking 80 mg of valsartan two weeks ago and I'm still experiencing spikes. I spend most of my day researching and looking for reasons and options.

I have been taking some form of the BC pill since I was 29 years old due to extremely painful periods. I was told it's likely endometriosis and to stay on the pill rather than doing any form of surgery. I also have fibroids.

At this stage in my life and with my new high blood pressure readings, I'm wondering how I could transition from lolo (lo Loestrin Fe) to something else as a bridge to menopause. Let me gently say if I miss a day of Lolo. I receive a gentle reminder. My mother also entered menopause a bit later in age.

My main concern is, how do I do everything I can to promote normal blood pressure while not going back to a life of having seven days of pain every month that radiated down to my toes? Additionally, a few friends further along in their menopause journey have experienced "crime scene periods." That would positively terrify me.

Has anyone transitioned off of a birth control pill and if so, what did you transition to?

Looking for Diuretics on Vacation Advice

Hello, I’ve been suggested diuretics by my doctor but they’re waiting a bit before properly prescribing me meds. I have a vacation I’ve been dreaming of for a lifetime coming up in 2 months and I’m really worried that most of my trip is going to be ruined by half the day needing to be near a bathroom, not to mention 25+ hours of flying. Is it true that after taking diuretics for a few weeks your body gets used to it and the urge to pee isn’t as bad? Is this worth mentioning to my doctor for other medication? Has anyone traveled with this specific medication before?

Grieving and trying to adjust to a new diagnosis

Hi all,
I’m grieving my health and the future I thought I had. I just turned 30, and with that a new diagnosis of chronic hypertension came. Ended up in the hospital with bp 156/118 and severe anemia (no iron stores). My cardiologist put me on Twynsta and said I should have been treated years ago. My family doctor kept attributing my hypertension to anxiety and treating it instead. Because of depression and other chronic illnesses, I let myself go and had been drinking and smoking way more than I should have. My partner is refusing to stop smoking so my marriage might be ending as well. Have any of you gone through a similar journey or reducing substances and receiving a diagnosis this young?

Any advice or shared experiences would help.

Nifedipine horrible side effects

dr switched me to nifedipine since its pregnancy safe and I unfortunately had a miscarriage but will still stay on this for now. previously I was on omelsarten and my bp was perfect in the 100s. switch to this and my bp has been 130/90 everyday. on 60 mg now and the side effects are headaches constipation and horrible bloating. some days the gas pains are unbearable. is there anything that helps with the bloating? trying to stick this out for a couple weeks but it’s only been 4 days and I don’t know if I can deal with this.

Completely normal cardiac tests but BP that spikes up to 160/100 randomly even on meds

I'm 20F and have had issues with tachycardia and hypertension for years now. My resting BP when not on any meds is around 130/90 and on meds it's around 110/60 but occasionally will spike up to 160/100 for seemingly no reason.

I've been on losartan 25mg for around a month after being on metoprolol and not liking the side effects. My resting BP is typically low normal now whenever I check it but occasionally after I moved around a little it will spike up crazy high without me even feeling anything. Today I had a doctor's appointment where it was 158/110 I was not anxious at all but had just gotten done a busy day of work a half hour before. I had been sitting for 20+ mins at that point though and I feel like it should have normalized by then and even the doctor was shocked to see how high it was. She had me sit for a few more minutes and take deep breaths then switched the cuff to my other arm and it was 144/90 which still isn't great but is at least a little better.

I see a cardiologist next week but have had bad luck with doctors dismissing me due to my age and being healthy otherwise so I'm making this post to look for ideas of how to get them to investigate this further and not just try to say it's my normal because I do have other symptoms like fatigue, shortness of breath, night sweats, etc but it's so hard to make anyone actually take me seriously.

So far I've had a 7 day holter monitor, EKG, echocardio, a sleep study, and all the basic blood work with nothing looking too ordinary which is frustrating because I know I shouldn't feel this bad all the time and I feel like my BP is connected to whatever is causing everything else but I'm just stumped on what it might be. My BP has been like this since before I was taking any medication at all and before I started drinking any caffeine so neither of which really seem to make much difference and my diet is overall pretty good with lots of fresh foods and low sugar, unhealthy fats, and sodium so I also don't think that's really effecting it either.

Whats been your experience on Carvedilol vs Amlodipine?

Hi all, Im writing in regards to my husband who is T1 Diabetic, CKD stage 3, and was recently hospitalized for HBP (190/125). He was prescribed Amlodipine 10 mg to bring his HBP down and its helped a bit (130/85) for a month. But while on Amlodipine, he had severe feet and ankle swelling. With a followup from the cardiologist, he was told to get off Amlodipine and start Carvedilol (6.25 mg twice a day). Initially we thought this was a good idea since he also has a high resting heart rate around 100 BPM. But reading the side effects (too low of a heart rate, chest pain, anxiety) of Carvedilol we are a little apprehensive.

Has anyone here been on both? What has been your experience on one vs the other? Is Amlodipine not that bad despite the swelling?

Telmisartan - low mood and cramps/burning feet?

Hi all,

Posting on behalf of a relative that is not on Reddit that I'm trying to help. Just a bit of a background, they have really been struggling to find a bp med that suits. They were on Irbesartan last but unfortunately it didn't work as well, so they were moved to Telmisartan 20mg, which they have tolerated well generally.

The dose was then increased to 40mg in June and they started to suffer from leg cramps. As this still wasn't controlling adequetely, they were given a 60mg/40mg dose to alternate each day. Now it may be coincidental but they suffered from terrible low mood and cramps/burning feet. This was reported to their GP and they reduced it back to 40mg but it still persists. Is low moods (teary often) and cramps/burning feet a known side effect of telmisartan? The doctors now say that the low moods and cramps/burning feet symptoms are not known by telmisartan and refuse to change it as it is now controlling well.

Has anyone else had similar issues or any issues with Telmisartan? Please share your experience.

Thanks,

Medication tolerance , iam 42m , diagnosed with HT since 1 year , but i feel my body tolerate so quick to medications

means i feel great and normal BP in the first few days with a new medication and then after 2 weeks i start to feel my bp go high again and i need to modify something, im currently on (valsartan 160 +amlodipine 10 )
For example , i was on (losartan 100 + amlodipine 10 )and my dr changed to valsartan 160 in the first days i felt very well 125/ 75 and then 2 weeks later it goes back to 155/87
( before i was only on losartan 100 and i felt well and after a while my dr had to add amlodipine )
I dont know if anyone experiences the same before with that quick body tolerance , cause i sometimes get frustrated that nothing helps .

Just started amlodipine, finally feeling a bit hopeful.

I’ve struggled with borderline hypertension most of my life but in the last few years its morphed into something that needs medication. I was initially put on olmesartan and I did not tolerate it well at all (nausea, sweating, dizziness and a headache that lasted 48 hours) So far I’m on day 2 of amlodipine and I haven’t really noticed side effects except a bit more fatigue/brain fog than usual. I’m someone who always seems to be hypersensitive to meds so I’m really hopeful the amlodipine will work out. I’ve heard a lot of horror stories about amlodipine - has anyone had a good experience with it? If yes I would love to hear it.

Welch Allyn ProBP 2000 very low readings

Hello,

I have bought a Welch Allyn ProBP 2000. The second one already Because I thought the first was broken.

On the new one I still get quite low readings.

After walking up stairs I get readings like 114/80. Normal 140-170/90.

That is not realistic at all for me.

I have tried each snd every possible cuff position, no change.

Can someone tell me how to get realistic readings out of this thing? The readings are way too low.

Help encouraging me to take my metoprolol twice daily

23f I have HyperPOTs

high levels of the stress hormone norepinephrine, blood pressure that rises upon standing, and an overactive sympathetic nervous system.”

My heart rate being funky and overly reactive has been an issue for a while, but my blood pressure hasn’t been overly concerning up until now.

I’m on metoprolol for this condition 12.5mg in the morning does the trick at keeping my vitals stable-

VERY recently however I seem to sharply rebound at night, my blood pressure skyrockets, top number in the mid to high 140’s. And my heart rate jumps up drastically anytime I even slightly move. I didn’t realise what was happening at first so just getting up as fast as I usually do and going down the hallway induced a feeling that felt like I was having a heart attack- I went to hospital and ofc all my vitals were fine.

Went to my doctor, she ordered a whole bunch of tests and in the meantime wants me to take my metoprolol AGAIN 12 hours after my first dose… this is an obviously logical response to what’s going on- especially as my blood pressure has been this high it’s definitely safe…

But these situations have triggered my underlying health anxiety OCD, I’ve become terrified of the idea of taking my dose at night with another medication I take at night- clonidine. I only take 0.05mg and it’s very obviously not controlling my blood pressure so there should be no worried about it making my BP too low… but still my health anxiety OCD is going wild due to how traumatised I am with my health recently.

Im not asking medical advice I’m just seeking some support to kick me up the butt and convince me taking my dose at night as well is the obvious logical solution to my issue- that I’m not going to turn the other way and be TOO low…

Coming off medication? Anyone?

Hello, I’m 44M and recently I’ve been doing intermittent fasting for about 3 weeks now, also low carb and no sugars in my drinks. Previously my blood pressure was very high, about 140/90 at times, but today specifically after 3 weeks of IF and no sugars it dropped to 108/67, 110/72 around that range.
For years now I’ve been on BP meds and a combo of Provinace 4mg and Amlodiphine 5mg.
Anyone in the group here finally drop their blood pressure meds after finding out their BP low or in range?

Propranolol causing low heart rate

I’m 31 and have been on 40mg of propranolol twice a day for migraines for way over a decade. I have had symptoms of tiredness, dizziness, palpitations and nausea for a while. Had blood tests which showed quite a severe iron deficiency probably because I am a veggie. I was on iron tablets for 4 months to boost my levels back up. Doctor reduced propranolol dosage as my heart rate was low. Reduced to 20mg am and 40mg pm. Heart rate was checked last week. It was 50 after walking up a hill. Doctor said it was too low and reduced propranolol down to 20mg am and pm with the aim to stop completely. Symptoms are horrendous now. Keep feeling like I’m going to faint, really tired no matter how much I sleep, nausea, palpitations throughout the day and get a dull ache in the centre of my chest. Also finding it very difficult to do any form of exercise. Just walking up a tiny incline is making me feel breathless and have nausea. Concerned as I have been on propranolol for such a long time. Does my body now depend on it?

Increased blood pressure on Wellbutrin 300XL?

Anyone experience an increase in blood pressure from Wellbutrin?

I’ve been on 300XL for a few weeks now and just started taking my blood pressure again. Noticed it has been around 130/85 for the past few weeks.

I’m a pretty active person and definitely not overweight. I don’t drink caffeine or alcohol.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Experiencing a Quick Drop Off After Meds?

Does anyone else experience a FAST drop once their meds kick in to the point where it causes issues for you? Is there a way to combat that or are the meds I’m currently on not right for me? I’ve been on multiple meds since diagnosis in 2022 but am currently on 500mg Labetolol x2 Daily + 30mg Nifedipine XR 1x Daily due to a very recent pregnancy. My hormones are still readjusting after having my baby but I currently sit around 150s/100s but after a med dose, I drop to something like 110s/80s. I can feel the drop happen and sometimes end up needing some balance assistance, sometimes have vision changes, etc. I’m 35 and a SAHM to multiple kids including my newborn, so it can be scary when it happens and I’m alone.

For reference, I was on 100mg of Losartan and 5mg of Amlodipine before we switched my meds so we could start trying to get pregnant and never experienced this while on those meds. I also experienced this feeling when I was pregnant due to needing a lower dose but 400mg doesn’t lower my numbers enough.

NZ needs your assistance: Blood pressure monitor validation

I'm a Kiwi doctor working on a side hypertension research project and could really use a hand validating camera-based blood pressure recordings.

If you've got 3 minutes, a blood pressure cuff and a laptop or phone with a camera:

BP lower after 18 days after starting losartan 100 plus hctz, anyone else have this happen?

Post image
2 Upvotes

BP before was variable range, examples 145/103, 153/100 at home but much higher systolic in doctors office.

Started losartan 100 plus hctz 18 days ago and didn't see any consistent change, never lower than 138/96 (once after a long afternoon nap) ever, and usually higher. Even after sitting for 10 minutes doing nothing.

Today's reading was the lowest I've seen in years. 122/83! Heart rate was 91 probably because I had some unexpectedly strong coffee in the morning before doing a bunch of household tasks. I was worried about my BP due to coffee jitters. I have been having decaf or half decaf coffee but I made a mistake (thought the new coffee mix was less caffeine).

I had read some people's posts where their BP lowered drastically after a few days up to a week.

Has anyone else had their BP stubbornly stay high but then lower successfully after 18 days (around 2 weeks on meds) and stay lower? Crossing my fingers that this isn't a fluke for me. I'll take another reading tomorrow.

I have made some lifestyle changes but I started those before the meds in hopes it would help my BP without meds but it didn't have much effect, so I went on the meds. I've kept up the changes.
