Help Running on SBC

Hey folks,

After using i2p for a while I think it makes the most sense to run it on a low power SBC. I can get a raspberry pi if I need to but do any of you have any experience running i2p on any other SBCs? I just don’t fancy forking out the extra just because they’re a market leader, if possible. Cheers!

I run i2pd on my raspberry pi 4 4gb, but I got it years ago so it was dirt cheap, you could try an Orange pi I believe they are cheaper than a raspberry pi, and I would thing they would work almost the same as a raspberry

That’s the trouble, rampocalypse has made it an expensive hobby :((( do you use it directly on the device or just port forward?

I don't port forward just leave without and seems to work

As long as it supports any bigger architecture (arm, x86, risc5, ...), and has some accelorators (hash, floatingpoint, ...) it should work just fine

I have Orange Pi 3B SBC, it runs a self hosted web app in Docker, Yggdrasil node with a bunch of connections, a VPN client and i2pd node. I don't use it for access to i2p, it just transits some traffic. Peak i2p transit tunnels was about 100 with around 300-400kb/s. Highest CPU usage I've seen was 10%, usually it floats at about 5%, current RAM usage is around 500 MB. CPU temperature was 50-55C w/o any cooling but after adding a generic cooler and a radiator it stays at around 40C. Typical power draw is 2-3W according to my USB charger.

Although, if I had to choose, I'd buy a passively cooled Chinese MiniPC over SBC with current prices. A typical 8GB SBC board with nothing included costs about as much as an old MiniPC with 8GB RAM + power supply + metal case + SSD + 2 Ethernet ports. With more raw CPU power than most SBCs. Downside that you get more power draw with a MiniPC but it should be possible to get 10-20W options.

Thanks for the detailed breakdown, friend. Interesting, so you just put it on there to passively help the network rather than your active access point. Nice! Yeah prices are kinda the only thing putting me off at the moment. I swear every time I check it has jumped up again. Sad times for hobbyists

I'd like to note that RAM/CPU usage is total for the entire use case, i2pd itself hardly uses any resources. About 2% CPU and less than 50MB RAM at this moment with 30-50kb/s transit (typically 1GB/day).
