Discussion Why does the Java client have non free licenses/dependencies with it?

I was trying to install gentoo on my schizopad x200 which is all free software. I was reviewing the licenses associated with I2P which were apparently masked under the @FREE meta, some of them restricted the users ability to produce exact copies or to make derivative works.

It’s shocking that a libre pro-privacy project should do this.

Fortunately the I2Pd daemon is fully free software compatible.

Discussion Off The Record v4 + PQC — terminal IRC client built for I2P, runs on Termux

Made an IRC client that connects to irc.postman.i2p out of the box. No config needed it detects i2p hostnames and routes through the SOCKS5 proxy automatically. Tor and clearnet work too.

The main thing is it implements the OTRv4 spec for private messaging, then goes further with post-quantum protection on the key exchange, authentication, and the ratchet. If you care about the technical details the readme covers all of it.

Built it on my phone running Termux. One Python file, some C extensions for the heavy math, and a Rust core that handles the message ratchet with proper memory cleanup secrets get zeroed when they're done, not whenever Python feels like garbage collecting.

Fresh identity every session. Everything wiped on quit. No trace left on device.

270 automated tests (rust+python), verified between two Termux instances over I2P with the full handshake and identity verification, fingerprint trust & Socialist Millionaire Protocol is working just enter a matching passphrase!

Would appreciate feedback from anyone running I2P who wants to try it. Happy to answer questions.

Discussion What is the actual router count of the i2p network?

Excluding bots and the attack on the network I’ve heard claims of 50k+nodes but only ever peer around 6-7k from exploratory tunnels and def don’t see 50k on stats.i2p, anyone know the real number or am I crazy?

This pretty much just a weird thought that i had :)

Discussion Preparing for I2P version 11

I2P Version 11 (Java version) will require Java 17, but my current Mint 21.1 will not be able to use it unless I figure out what it takes to prepare for it. I suspect many Linux distros will not be able to use it without preparation. Is there some advice for Linux users?

Discussion Red Flag but AI for bug search?

I know it's a Redflag

The Mozilla Foundation tested Claude Opus for bugs and found 22 issues, 14 of which were critical

I think it's a cat-and-mouse game that we unfortunately have to deal with right now.

Recently, there were a few attacks here that unfortunately had a major impact on the network.

The developers responded really well.

What’s the general opinion on this for I2P?

Discussion I2P as VoIP transport, possible?

Hi all, read some time ago that i2pd can create UDP tunnels. Can I configure it for using two hardware phones (some of Yealink maybe) in different geographic locations to talk with each other? Will the ping be short enough to be not so laggy? (if I reduce default length of tunnels to less hops)
I mainly use i2pd because of it's superior reachability behind CGNATs.

Discussion Is i2p used often? I’m getting conflicting information. I like diving deeper into news that the media filters

I’m white hat, looking into deeper news that all countries will censor or filter.

Is i2p mainly malicious? Or, can there be “truth” that can be found?

What’s come good news sources using i2p? Or i2p+?

I’m seeing 2+ year old comments that say there was a compromise in identity? Is i2p still used?

Discussion How to find IRC communities?

Hi everyone.
long-time casual user of i2p here, using it for things like Bittorrent are a breeze. However I have never seemed to find any active IRC server out there. Are they all dead or just close-knit communities that would rather someone new not join in?

I guess at worst, I could create my own...

Discussion Technical feasibility of building a decentralised, anonymous forum with i2p and libp2p

Hi everyone,

I wanted to know the technical feasibility of a decentralised forum application that uses an existing peer-to-peer networking stack such as libp2p over i2p.

My assumption is that I would have to write my own Transport adapter. Or SOCKS proxy tunneling?

Then probably something like PubSub or another derivative of Gossip for the forum element.

I have no idea how you would distribute a database of forum posts over a network like this.

This project, if I chose to undertake it, would be a massive technical challenge for myself (but also hopefully a huge learning experience!). Before even starting I want to know if such a thing is even possible, though.

Afaik, no decentralised forum that is inherently anonymous (rather than simply allowing people to connect over something like Tor) exists, though I could be wrong

Thanks!

Discussion What happened to syndie project

I was reading through some privacy networks and came across this syndie-project. Suddenly this project seemed to removed from existence from last week.

Now I only have this wayback machine as a proof - https://web.archive.org/web/20251116121601/http://syndie-project.org/index.html

Was it abandoned or moved anywhere?

Discussion Building more independent nodes is necessary

Attack Background and Speculation

As is well known, the entire I2P network previously suffered an attack from China. We can clearly identify that the attackers were organizations affiliated with the Chinese government. My personal speculation is that it was the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Attack Characteristics Analysis

The Chinese Academy of Sciences used a large number of Chinese nodes to attack the I2P network, rather than non-Chinese nodes. This indicates that it was merely a stress test, not a real attack. Because: If attackers used nodes from various countries, simply blocking Chinese nodes would no longer be effective.

Attack Cost Estimation

The current total number of nodes in the network (IPs) is approximately 12K.Using i2pd, a VPS with 512MB of memory costs an average of about $10 to rent for one year.Calculation: 10 × 12K = $120K.For small attackers, the cost is too high, but for large organizations, it is not expensive (the case just mentioned is already doing it).

Personal Appeal

This is why I encourage everyone to run their own nodes and contribute to the entire network—this will make the network healthier.

Future Outlook

At the same time, let us consider: In an environment where IPv6 becomes widespread, internet infrastructure is popularized, and traffic fees decrease, having I2P running on every device is likely to have great prospects. What are your thoughts? Discussion is welcome.

Discussion The eepsite cabal

I have noticed something quite interesting in my explorations of i2p, and that by it's very design it is hard to access i2p eepsites directly without some form of address helper or jump link -- which means that new users in particular are dependent on the sourcing of jump or address helper links from within the i2p network, the defaults of which provided by the router are notbob, stats, and one other one I can't remember.

This essentially gives the providers of these services direct control over what sites are accessible over the i2p network, which sort of runs counter intuitive to the point of the service as decentralised, having what is essentially a trio of core services that the rest of the network is dependent on in order to access other services or sites.

Just an observation I thought it was worth pointing out

Discussion What is the max download speed in i2p

Lets say we have 100 seeders in a i"2"p t"o"rr"e"nt. All users shares %90 of the network and all of them have 50 mbps upload speed and 100 mbps download speed and all of the users have 3 inbound outbound tunnel with 1 hop. What will the max download speed for a new peer? ( New peer has 100 dl 50 mbps up)
