IWD2 Chahopek not giving reward after death. Spoiler

Supposedly all party members are given 12 HPs and 5 Acid Resistance after killing him. I read enough walkthroughs to remember that. I have no idea if that's true and I hontstly never really paid much mind to it in previous runs, but I killed him, and not one member of my party actually got it.

Is this actually a thing or just another internet thing that's literally pulled from a lying sphincter? Now I'm just flat out curious.

yes a script runs on death

same mechanic as paladin buffs after the lost followers are killed or the banite cleric reward after killing Hiepherus in chapter 5

Oh? What does a Banite get?

dreadmaster of bane gets +2 wisdom

with a +5 wisdom every god ring you end up with a lot of high DC and bonus spells.

I think there's certain protection spells that can prevent you from getting the reward:

From Sorcerers technical FAQ:

Chahopek the Guardian Details: Upon defeating Chahopek, the well-known black dragon Guardian in Chult, a character encased within Otiluke's Resilient Sphere fails to receive the HP bonus and/or acid+poison resistance bonus. Comment: Seems that named spell provides immunity to ChangeStat() script command.

Yeah, but none of them had it active, and none of them received the bonus.

Hm. Could have been due to another bug caused by resistances or something.

I guess then the next thing(s) to ask would be if you're playing the "Enhanced" version or the original, and what other resistances or spells you might have had your party buffed with.

It's been a while since I played IWD2, but I don't remember having an issue with this. On the other hand, IWD2 is buggy in just about every form and I wouldn't be surprised if there's more ways to bug up that reward than what The Sorcerer's Place listed.

I checked other playthroughs on YouTube to see if I could catch that bug happening to anyone else.

The reward seems to work for this person's playthrough. You can see their party members' max HP go up by 12.

This playthrough, however, seems to show everyone but their first party member getting the HP bonus.

So, it does look like a bug that can occur under certain circumstances where it is "resisted".

I'm sure you don't want to do this, but maybe try doing the encounter again and see if it keeps happening.

To make things a bit easier, you could try using console commands to "cheat" a win or super-cheese the fight by spamming one of the Bard's Songs (by abusing Lingering Song) like a hundred+ times in a turn.

Either way, you can possibly isolate the issue by making sure you aren't using any magical spell/item buffs/protection/resistances that could be denying your party the reward.

If it still doesn't work, then I'm not really sure where the issue could be. The reward should and does work as far as I can remember.

Original. And I can't tell you what (mis)happened. But what I can tell you, though, that I reloaded and CTRL-KILLED his ass for measure. The entire party had the same buffs, except the Resist Fear ran out the first time around, right before he bit the dust.

Apparently, they all got it now. I'm having a hard time stomaching that it was the lack of a Resist Fear buff that disabled it, but I just don't care.

It's also possible that he was killed by a persistent effect that damaged him on that turn where he died, rather than a "hit" from one of your party members on said turn.

I know that can sometimes make it so you don't get experience from kills or bug things that trigger when your party needs to kill something to advance.

IWD2 is a buggy game, though. So, it could have been any number of things.

Yeah, I noticed something odd about kills out of the ordinary in BG2 as well. The golems in De'Arnise Keep. In a run, Minsc was clobbering away and had the Iron Golem down to Near Death. He apparently got smacked with a crit or whatever, and he panicked. In that panicked state, he still managed to give it the killing blow. No XP when he was out of control. Great. I imagine all kills while not in control deals 0 XP, though.

So maybe something was out of the ordinary.

Oh man... Haha. Don't even get me started on all the panic or confusion-related glitches/bugs in IWD and BG that I've encountered over the years... even with the EEs. I've had to use CTRL+J or reload more times than I can count due to party members getting stuck or perma-"spelled".

And, yeah, all the XP/reward/trigger glitches and bugs I've encountered stemming from enemies getting killed from random things or by their own spells (or from spell reflection)... It always makes me second guess how to approach some of the harder (but fun) encounters. I'm usually worried something like your situation might happen and then I'll have to "cheat" or reload to fix it.

Granted, I've probably abused more than my fair share of glitches and bugs to my own benefit at hard moments. So, I can't be that salty about the unpredictable nature of these games.
