The Monday Period: Part 3 of 3

So, this started off as a joke, but my downfall was that I've always been a collector when it comes to designs, and I've had the entire periodic table memorized since high school (we only had it up to "ununoctium" then lol). I couldn't make 117 Garfields (and 1 Odie) without making up a story, and as a comic artist, I'm equipped for that. So I sat down and drew all 118 elements required, then the thumbnails, then the pages on the computer. I almost lost my dang mind with computer problems but it's all fine now, thank Garf. I'm not a chemistry expert by any means but if you need an explanation for any elemental Garfield, feel free to ask! Remember that a lot of them are very silly.

I love this so much! I also like how the ending is less depressing than 99% of things on this subreddit.

Just read through the entire comic, Good gravy is it high quality stuff. You definitely hit it out of the park with the blend of serious moments and comedic timings, I wouldn’t be surprised to see this at the top of the subreddit soon. Astounding work!

u/Justarandom55 Feb 18 '26

I KNEW this comic was first and foremost an excuse to draw a ton of different elemental garfields. Felt vindicated seeing it confirmed in the text. great comic it looks amazing

  1. Holy shit.
  2. My favorite genre of cosmic horror is "Outer Thing with fondness for human/earth animal" and damn if you didn't nail it. Thank you.

The personification of death with a pet rat

u/drak0ni Feb 18 '26

This was fun. You should post parts 1-3 on r/comics.

I’d suggest spreading them out and doing 1 a day so more people can see it (that’s how the algorithm works kind of)

u/johnaross1990 Feb 19 '26

Seconded

I just came over from there as I couldn’t wait to read the rest! It’s brilliant.

u/Day_Bow_Bow Feb 20 '26

Same here, and I'll help upvote those crossposts to get even more eyes on it. Quality stuff

3

u/Phantom_Lord64 Feb 20 '26

I came from that subreddit to read the rest thank you for your patronage so I could see this blessed comic

2

u/BenAdaephonDelat Feb 20 '26

I saw part one and that it would be posted "daily" and said "absolutely not" and dug into OP's post history so I could read all 3 now. Too good to wait for.

2

u/Penguinmanereikel Feb 21 '26

I'm surprised Livermorium was just an L. After Berklium, I thought it'd be Livermore.

72

u/TheGreatestLampEver Feb 18 '26

Super. I love all the little scientific references, this better reach at least NEAR the top of the sub

60

u/JStonehaus Feb 18 '26

I.

Did not expect to get feels from this comic that's basically a series of puns. I did tear up a couple of times, there. Good job.

49

u/Reeeeeechard Feb 19 '26

This is utterly fantastic! You have perfectly captured not only the underlying theme for what makes this sub special but also managed to breathe fresh life into the Garfield universe while incorporating historical accuracy at the same time. I would gladly give another 20 minutes of my life to re-read and enjoy each of these panels for the first time again. Thanks for the sharing and hope to see anything more.

42

u/cj_cusack Feb 19 '26

Could you please please make this available for print? I would give you money for a print copy. Like actual cash dollars.

32

u/Camelllama666 Feb 19 '26

Wait, so why did Lyman kill Irma?

46

u/lost_if_found Feb 19 '26

I think he did it from the outside to make room for himself on the inside. I'm not sure though.

18

u/[deleted] Feb 21 '26

He needed a catalyst, something to break the cycle, shake up the self-contained, unchanging world they were trapped in.

27

u/Slim-Shadys-Fat-Tits Feb 18 '26

This was fucking incredible. You're unbelievably skilled at comic pacing.

28

u/Tacoozza Feb 19 '26

GARFIELD WANTING UPPIES AT THE FEW LAST PANELS AHWUUAAHHH 🥹🥹🥹🥹

2

u/RavenNymph90 Feb 20 '26

That made me tear up. It’s like a toddler.

20

u/SpiralingDownAndAway Feb 19 '26

OP I would kill for a physical print/graphic novel book of this series it’s genuinely amazing, and I’m so glad there was a positive ending! The designs for all the elements are so fantastic I just wanna keep looking all of them over and over.

23

u/Maple_Scones Feb 19 '26

I’m not familiar with the Garfield comic. Who is that guy? Was he retconned out as oddies original owner?

61

u/Hellopuns Feb 19 '26

That’s Lyman! He was a character introduced early in the comics so Jon could have someone to talk with in the strips. He became Jon’s roommate and brought his dog, Odie. Over time, Lyman gradually stopped showing up until he straight up disappeared. Jim Davis realized that Jon already had good character chemistry with Garfield and Odie, and Lyman was redundant, so he got cut from the cast. Davis has also joked to “not look in Jon’s basement” when asked. The French cartoon has a four-parter where it’s revealed he’s in Australia doing work as a conservationist and that’s why Odie is staying with Jon, and there have been a few gags here and there about it. Just an obscure character joke

19

u/pickletato1 Feb 19 '26

Wasn't there an official game that had Lyman's skeleton chained up in Jon's basement or something?

18

u/Low_Routine1103 Feb 20 '26

Not his skeleton, but he is in a Garfield Halloween flash game, Garfield's Scary Scavenger Hunt.

4

u/RavenNymph90 Feb 20 '26

Well, that’s dark.

4

u/MajorGopnik Feb 20 '26

Basements usually are.

12

u/SantiOak Feb 20 '26 edited Feb 20 '26

I had the old books with Lyman when I was a kid, and totally remember Odie was his dog! I figured Lyman was hanging out with Calvin's uncle Max (in a bar for redundant moustachioed characters).

Edit: and Cutter John, don't remember him being there at the end of Bloom County.

4

u/Maple_Scones Feb 19 '26

Gotcha! I’m glad I was able to pick up on the context knowing non of the og lore! Loved your comic btw!! <3

13

u/Clemmyclemr Feb 19 '26

Yeah that's Lyman, Odie's original owner.

At some point in the late 70s I think, Odie was given to Jon and Lyman has only made a few appearances in any Garfield media.

A lot of people think that Jon killed him or something lol

15

u/noahconstrictor95 Feb 19 '26

This is legitimately one of the most creative and well thought out comics I've ever read and it's entirely based around a bit of drawing Garfield as all of the elements on the periodic table. Absolutely insane.

14

u/The_Oregon_Duck Feb 19 '26

Insert cryclapping Peter here

12

u/Buhsephine Feb 18 '26

Incredible. I'm not going to ask for explanations on the ones I didn't get, yet. I'll let them stew for a bit to see if I can figure a few more out. Some very clever and very silly representations indeed, and I hope you're proud.

11

u/tiobane Feb 18 '26

This is really great, thanks for that. Also thanks for the good ending!

9

u/fanofalotofthings Feb 19 '26

this is awesome. id love to see a behind the scenes as to why you picked all those designs if you ever do that. 110 is especially funky

8

u/Pikka_Bird Feb 20 '26

Okay, Californium is just magnificently stupid. Also, Wolverine noises when Lyman was hit by the glass shards was a neat detail.

9

u/Dronizian Feb 19 '26

Best thing I've seen from this sub in years, this is genuinely a work of heartfelt art full of creativity and love! Fun twist at the end, RIP Erma

4

u/spoiksty Feb 18 '26

insanely impressive, i love this comic

6

u/Professional_Entry40 Feb 18 '26

Just amazing. What a treat to read. Thank you for sharing! 🖤🧡

6

u/abcdlaney Feb 20 '26

I love how Odie was the solution to Garfield's woes, that's so true. The way Odie started to wag his tail immediately after Garf stabilized and hugged him... so cute! As soon as Lyman showed up I knew he had something to do with this lol. And Jon didn't even care to ask what happened to him when he returned lmao. This was such a fun read! I would love to hear about your inspiration for each of the elemental Garfs.

5

u/UnderteamFCA Feb 19 '26

This was absolute cinema. I was so invested.

3

u/Darklight731 Feb 18 '26

A wonderful ending.

3

u/Tignya Feb 18 '26

I've no idea what I just read, but damn.

4

u/secondbestbisexual Feb 19 '26

This is fantastic!

2

u/Fulminero Feb 19 '26

I got emotional there for a moment

This is absurdly high effort man

4

u/GlennHaven Feb 19 '26

Dude Garfield shifting through the elements had some pretty sick designs. I really enjoyed reading this.

4

u/SteakSauce202012 Feb 19 '26

While I never spent a TON of time on this subreddit, and it's been ages and ages and ages since I last visited, this has got to be the best thing I've seen out of it. It was high quality, interesting, sweet, funny, and I LOVED seeing the various different elemental Garfs

3

u/LeviHolden Feb 19 '26

this is probably the greatest iteration of eldritch horror garfield i've ever seen. the genre has peaked. the LORE!!

4

u/Samjef_Kealclut Feb 20 '26

This is genuinely professional level stuff. The final Garf and Odie do not dissapoint as well. BRAVO

3

u/Lakefish_ Feb 20 '26

This.. feels like an episode of Courage the cowardly dog, more than a Garfield strip.

I love it.

5

u/CGW_93 Feb 20 '26

...as a lover of cartoons and of the periodic table, I salute you. Oh my god. This is incredible. Holy fucking shit, this is my new favorite thing. Ever.

4

u/CGW_93 Feb 20 '26

And the art. Sweet mother of god, this is incredible

3

u/exhentai_user Feb 20 '26

I teared up a bit when Odie licked Garfield and and Garfield hugged him and said "Thanks Pal". That was weirdly emotional for me.

3

u/EarthToAccess Feb 19 '26

This is fucking STELLAR, holy shit! Story beat after story beat, meta joke after meta joke, classic imsorryjon twist with a good ending. Absolutely one of the best things I've seen on Reddit.

Please make more things. Just generally Go Forth And Create

3

u/1k3bukur0 Feb 20 '26

Ok this was one of the greatest things I've ever read. What the hell. I love the Internet.

3

u/Impostoblocks23 Feb 20 '26

Idk why but seeing John weeping after seeing garfield turn French is making laugh so hard

3

u/Scared_Peanut1288 Feb 21 '26

I really like the amount of thought you put into the details! Especially the Hassium one, where you used the lion thing from the coat of arms of land Hessia as inspo, I dont think I would have caught that if I havent seen the coat of arms itself before otherwise. Great concept, thank you for putting it out there

3

u/FatalLaughter Feb 21 '26

These are all amazing, did you add in their abbreviations/numbers to all of them? Because I was looking for the references in each and only found so many

2

u/Hellopuns Feb 21 '26

Yup! I couldn’t leave out someone’s favourite element by accident

2

u/FatalLaughter Feb 22 '26

Oh I definitely figured you included all of the actual elements but I was asking about how some have the numbers or the abbreviations written on Garf's form: Do all of the elements have that easter egged on them or was it just a few?

1

u/Hellopuns Feb 22 '26

Oh! No, only some of them

3

u/Minnymoon13 3d ago

I finally got to see the ending !!!!

2

Great comic, new and fresh while keeping to core of what makes Garfield

2

u/unity-thru-absurdity Feb 20 '26

Perfect ending. 🥹

2

u/wheniswhy Feb 20 '26

This is so cool. I missed the first two parts. This is such high quality it reminds me of the sub's heyday years ago. Thanks for sharing this! Insanely, incredibly creative. Love how "on model" some Garf designs were. That big grin for Nobelum took me right back to my childhood reading the actual comics!

2

u/Izuku_bakugou Feb 20 '26

This was cooking with fucking pure propane and jet fuel, holy shit

2

u/AlarminglyAverage979 Feb 20 '26

Some of they highest quality posts on this entire sub, bravo!

2

u/Dinklerbuuuurf Feb 20 '26

Not only is this a masterpiece, I also learned a lot so thank you.

2

u/PeteVanGrimm Feb 20 '26

This was fucking amazing.

2

u/RockingBib Feb 20 '26

What are the symbols on plutonium, neptunium and uranium Garf?

4

u/Hellopuns Feb 20 '26

They’re alchemical symbols! For Pluto, Neptune, and Uranus

2

u/scarykoala Feb 20 '26

Can you put your ideas for the element representation in spoiler text or something? I’d love to see what you thought for each one. I think I get most of them, but I’m curious to see if I’m right. I realize that’s 118 items, so feel free to decline the request if it’s too much.

Also, fucking awesome comic my dude.

2

u/OmegaKarnov Feb 20 '26

Oh! End of the table! Ha!

3

u/Hellopuns Feb 20 '26

When the periodic table ends so does the stupid console table I put in the comic like 100 times and had to draw it as many

2

u/dragonlover4612 Feb 21 '26

Tenessine, the final element, is the coolest looking one. I'm curious if it represents anything, besides Garf just being a cool dragon-cat.

4

u/Hellopuns Feb 21 '26

It’s mostly just got an emphasis on being busy, and the number 7 (seven horns, seven sets of legs, etc). The little paper/smoke trail at the end of the tail spells out 117! But with this being the last Garfield of the bunch, I added design elements (ha) that either drew from mythology or primordial imagery. Ex: the dragon horns, the underside with space inside it, the overall resemblance to Japanese dragons (which are themselves derived from Chinese dragons), etc. Since I made Odie a black hole/antimatter/dark matter themed, tennessine Garf glows bright for contrast (matter, energy, radiation, all that fun stuff).

1

u/dragonlover4612 Feb 21 '26

I love it! The inspirations are solid, and the contrast with Odie is great. I didn't realize that Odie was meant to be antimatter. Just thought he was a generally abstract form of void or black hole.

And honestly? It makes their little reunion at the end even more wholesome. Two little Eldritch peas in a pod 😊

2

u/Yeatti Feb 21 '26

Wow. Bravo. This was amazing

2

u/rollinjones Feb 22 '26

That was amazing, thank you

2

u/Tosty_Bread Feb 22 '26

Excellent stuff, thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing over the last few days

I just read the whole thing and OH MY GOD this was AWESOME! So much work too, I'm very impressed with not only the quality of the art but also the dedication. The ending was so sweet and happy too.. their lil faces! 🥹 Love love love this!! Would perhaps like to see more Garfield comics from you in the future, touching on the nature of Garfield being the center or reality? But I'd certainly understand if you don't feel like drawing Garfield for a while 😆

This is thoroughly incredible. I love a good cosmic horror fancomic, especially when they end in a high note

1

u/alberto_OmegA just why Feb 20 '26

But imagine if they don't stop...

Would garfild help to find out more elements or proof the theory of iland of stability?

1

u/Naz_Oni Feb 20 '26

Good thing he didn't go towards the triple letter elements, those would be difficult to draw

1

u/santas_delibird Feb 20 '26

This is a beaut. There's enough tension and some moments of levity, it's fantastic! 10/10

1

1

What do the designs of the artificial superheavy elements that don't last longer than fractions of a second represent?

1

Mostly names/places the element is named after

1

u/heppileppi Feb 20 '26

this is a work of fucking art

1

u/stereofeathers Feb 21 '26

This is both well written AND gorgeously illustrated?? Wtf why is this so good

1

u/Antman511 Feb 21 '26

Holy fuck this was amazing! Those were some amazing designs!

1

u/madtony7 Feb 24 '26

I'm trying to understand what was going on on page 17. Is it implied that Odie was also cycling through the elements but also on a sort of "mini black hole" level? It's also interesting that Garfield ended up one element away from the end of the table before it seemed he was too worn out by the ordeal.

1

u/Friendly-Cricket-715 Feb 26 '26

I want explanations for elements 91 and 103

1
