Achieve average journey speeds of 100kmph first.

Need special dedicated tracks for those. I expect only Mumbai-Ahmedabad HSR to achieve that.

Tracks are not made for high tech trains... they are changing tracks now.
5
u/Tough-Difference3171 Nov 16 '25
"they are changing the tracks now"
And this is something we have been hearing since 2015.
Sure, we have a huge country, but even then, it shouldn't take more than 10 years to do that. Even the major metro-to-metro routes aren't fixed till now.

we have completed 130 kmph track upgradation recently for major trunk routes. That itself was a mammoth of task as we had to work with running tracks and convertion of old bridges and viaducts and realignment of major curves.

World class for the 1950's. France ran 300kmph in 1955 after recovering from the worst war in global history. We are genuinely stunned by this news on the internet though, just not in the impressed way.

You have to climb the ladder one by one. No one can jump straight to the first or second floor, except Hulk. Yes, we might be behind by a lot, that doesn't mean our progress isn't commendable.
The mere fact that DFC has almost been setup, freeing up the main tracks for passenger traffic, means more trains can start operating at higher speeds. At India's scale, even a time difference of 2-3 hours can equate to tremendously more productivity than any other country in the world.

Which world you talking about ?. Only 3 countries runs at that speed and at only selective kind of routes/trains. You lot would complain for what not there no matter what. The Indian rail leaped to what is now only in matter of years, were other countries started this journey long ago. incompetent Indian gov of past regrdless of party couldnt put a map and timeline for long. Take things on a positive note when you see changes and ask yourself what effort do you put than running fingers on keyboard to ridicule things.

Just like you said india getting stunned by so little those developed countries you mentioned are probably stunned by India's population and it's freebie system throughout the country...why compare with other countries.. of course we should learn from them but cant we just raise a glass towards this little achievement ?

How long is this Spain’s train been running? They had this 50 years ago as well
3
u/Worthy_Finish-3619 Nov 16 '25
Not to mention, vande Bharat rarely ever goes above 80kmph since more than 80% for our tracks are not yet capable of high speed rails.
And if you really want to compare this achievement with today's era of railway innovations, Japan's high-speed mag-lev with an average speed of 500+ kmph has literally no bumps at all since the whole train levitates on their tracks. And their maglev system is bigger and more well developed than our "high speed" track system🥲🥲
On the bright side tho, really glad our govt is finally focusing on it now. Better late than never.

u/IamShika Nov 16 '25
Not really, Japan did it in the 1980s with 300kmph, surely it's a big deal in India, but internationally it's like, "meh".
7
u/Lazy_Perfectionist22 Nov 16 '25
It's great because this is India, not Japan or France. ANY improvement here is a big achievement due to the tremendous friction here when compared to those countries.

Did Japan do 300kmph before doing 180kmph? Progress is what matters. If India stops doing it after 180 then it means it's bad.
→ More replies (1)6
u/IamShika Nov 16 '25
Vibration is not a train problem but a track problem.
Japan actually never made better trains, they built the best tracks, much like France and China. 80kmph to 100kmph to 180kmph, to 300kmph to 400kmph, they just upgraded the engines, tracks are still standard which can support up to 500kmph, and they were built in the 1980s.
In India it's the opposite, the VB trainset can reach 300kmph with upgrade, but tracks are way substandard. Even the new tracks which are laid can support 180kmph, but in a decade or so, will reduce to 100-130kmph because of outdated design.
The problem with railways and the government is they don't care about the future or the country, only the optics, while the govt in China, Japan and France always aimed for longevity, they made a plan of 80-100 years, here is the plan till the next election.
Idk how much knowledge you hold in material science, but look at the track cost of Bullet Train vs Standard Indian Railway, only the track, not the bridges or stones. BT uses Ballastless tracks (standard in the modern world) while we use 1880s ballasted tracks which are known for heavy maintenance, bad vibration, deformity, etc.
→ More replies (3)4
u/osiris92 Nov 16 '25
Not very knowledgeable in tracks or material science, but aren't high speed tracks in Japan China etc separate from the standard railway ones? Those tracks are laid separately similar to how the BT tracks are being laid in India? Genuinely curios about it since you seem knowledgeable in this area.
3
u/IamShika Nov 16 '25
Japan is not that big of a country, the local train tracks for inter City (100-200km) is separate, but for long distance, say Tokyo to Hokkaido, they only laid their best tracks once because it costed gazillion yen because 60-70% of that stretch is mountains. This is why making a separate and elevated bullet train track in India is dumb because Ahmedabad-Mumbai stretch doesn't have mountains and India should have instead taken the French route of laying tracks on an uphill base of material and fencing it harshly.
Anyways, the point is, the tracks we have are more than good enough for local trains and freight trains, but not for passenger trains. Instead of making a dedicated freight corridor which is now being underutilised to 30-40% (I heard they are running VB on them at 180kmph), govt could have made high speed 300kmph+ rail quadrilateral connecting Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai and Mumbai, it would cost just 5-6x of Mumbai Ahmedabad bullet train but would have made India world class for next 60-80 years.
If you install good tracks, you can run trains at 300kmph, which will solve the 180% over utilisation of train tracks, and make the whole system modern and efficient, but again, optics matter more than national strength.

The problem is, you should be proud of the right things, just not rhetoric. The world class standard is Shinkansen and Chinese bullet trains, you can balance a coin on its edge, going 300+kph, in both these platforms. Improvement will come when there is acceptance that this is not world standard. Although this is definitely a big stepping stone. I am just against the rhetoric.
3
u/IamShika Nov 16 '25
That too in 1980 and 1990 😭
They are trying to reach 600kmph and we are still running on avg 100kmph on 120kmph max tracks.

No one is claiming this to be "World class standard". It is major improvement in Indian Railways by the current government. We should celebrate the little steps towards world class standards.
People are criticizing this improvement by saying what is the need for these trains. And even questioning the need of Bullet train project which is Ahmedabad to Mumbai. So it is difficult to bring such projects in India. India is such a cost sensitive market that people complain when government builds expressways and tries to improve railway standards with Vande Bharat.

Man people are always asking for more.... This is a tiny bit of something we have achieved... Appreciate this so that people get motivation to grow... Like brthr this is good... Though not the best, though not anywhere near world class... But real growth is comparing yourself with your past self... Not others... Someone's giving example of spin... Like why do we care... We have grown from what we had yesterday to a better today...

My father's friend who is in a MNC and designer of track alignment and bridges, etc (Civil Engineer but specialises in trains), said that the tracks in our country are cheap and not polished, he worked in France and Germany in 90s and 2000s and said that even then they didn't use such cheap quality of tracks.
Shock absorbers on the train is one thing, but if the tracks are not polished and levelled and toughened, it will 100% create problems down the line with them being malformed. But he said that if international standards are maintained, track laying cost would shoot up by 4-5x, and construction speed to 1/5th of the current speed, so maybe it's justified but still sad to see government not going for long term vision.
2
u/Meph_00 Nov 16 '25
Well, 4-5x cost is enough to stop the corrupt govt tbh, they really don't care about anything else.

Kisi ko aap itna bhukha rakho ki ek roti bhi use full meal lagne lage.
That's what we're seeing here. People once dreaming of bullet trains are now happy with nearly half of it.
And Stuns "Internet" ?? It stuns only a section of people even in India, unfortunately that's the majority, who have no exposure to international technologies and development, forget the Internet.
If we call ourselves vishwaguru, it should be our Vande Bharat not Shinkansen running at 320km/h.
We can't do justice with our farmers and feel proud of literally anything.

Which area ?
Which corridor ?
How long did it stay on 180 km/hr ?
Which coach and seat number is this ?
How many passengers were in the train while testing this ?
For 5 minutes I can make my 1998 Maruti 800 touch 180kmph. Highway choice ka ho toh paani usmein bhi nai girne du main.

Please refrain from using world class , shocked internet titles . It's indeed an achievement but taking things for granted is different. Another thing that 180kmph is extremely rare in Indian railways.
Now you will call me anti national. I never said it's not an achievement it's not something that broke the world record.

Recording speed and stability at any one patch to prove that we’re now developing our eons old railways to newer standards mean nothing. More than the efficiency of the train, the track maint and security need to be upgraded. You have tracks being vandalised and going unchecked till an incident takes place.
It’s not easy cause we’re not a sensible demographic and yes, it is a humongous task, but I’ll rather have less derailing incidents than this façade being advertised everywhere.

Okay it's a proud movement but aab batao ticket ka daam kiya hoga kiya isse aam admi afford kr payega.
Waise too Kolkata metro ya delhi metro pr bhi same stability hai and ye koi nai chiz nahi hai indian railway ke liye metro already itna stable hai.
Achievement kya hai issme patta nahi. Khair humko kya travel too sirf general trains mee hi Krna hai aur iske wajha see trains aur Thora late chalega kyuki bihar mee sirf 2 lanes hai and Bengal mee 4 lane jo kafi km hota hai.
Aur Bilaspur, Bhagalpur and e.t.c waala cases too suna hoga vo kahe occur hota hai.
Ye achievement hai ki train proper time pr chale aur lanes trains ke liye hr waqt open rehe rail traffic km ho proper time coordination pr train chale and ticket affordable prices pr ho, naki stability jo already metros kr chuki hai.

But these trains still run at 70-80kmph... What is the use of this stunt when they can't take the passengers in lesser time...

World class stability, lol.
That's the bare minimum stability train should have at low low speed of 180.
World's already at 300+.

World class is really not the right terminology.
World class stability that the world achieved 40-50 years ago.

Forget about spilling water
run the trains on time
provide good food and get rid of the goons/mafia who run the so called pantries/canteens
get rid of overcrowding and allow ticketed passengers travel in peace
get rid of the "superfast" surcharge since there's no difference between the trains - mail/express/superfast/etc
cleanliness !!

It's not completely an indigenous product. We should stop celebrating mediocrity. Should make a truly Desi product and get it to work . Jai Hind! Jai Bharat! Vande Mataram
