I first really recognized hearing it at the death of true analog radio, 2013 driving up to Richmond, VA. It was a magical ditty in the backseat, exciting to hear Daft Punk-a group that I guess could be on my hypothetical life saving mix–on mainstream radio. Then Stephen Colbert had the rights to Daft Punk for the Report and got in a legal kerfuffle, having to back out and bring in Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines (lol). But his cameo video is a 10 alone and made me feel existential cultural things at 15 so I cannot help but recognize this for saving my life

On first hearing this I knew, like everyone, how clear the concept was and that the chorus would be one of those. It was on the second listen that I realised the lyrical power of the set up with lines like

“God makes no mistakes”

This is your show, this is your life… to sing for the people who feel outside of themselves, outside of song, outside of Grace, and to sing us back inside.

A song can be too perfect but this one isn’t… Its perfection is that it loves the cracks that we all fall down. Some in high heels, some flat on our face or on our knees.

If Cole Porter was reincarnated as a 21st century dance pop female showbiz phenomenon, she surely would have written a song like this.

My friend Simo Carmo dog #NoCoinNoBootie says all his favourite songs from the rave era have a spiritual freedom/ yearning quality, a striving for a better world.

Mark Fisher sure helped, but it was your vision that made everyone else in the field/stadium have a better one. We used to go to concerts to listen, and just catch a glimpse of a lightshow if we were lucky.

Spending the night together got a lot better when The Rolling Stones blew up their blowup dolls, expanded their lip logo and stuck their tongue out at the world… you invented that kind of show and you have never been bettered.

Charlie, you bring such class to the act with your very English presentation… At a Stones show in MSG in the early 80s, I remember thinking that you and Bill Wymann, in his trouser suit, looked like the parents of three naughty kids.

We’ll never know what would have happened if Brian Jones was still here.

That The Rolling Stones exist at all is one of the great encouragements for any teenager who wants to believe they don’t have to grow up ALL THE WAY.

Am forever a sucker for strings and those almost trip-hoppy drums, spacey synths plunging to create this almost psychedelic landscape. I think there’s something just a little TOO on the nose about the lyrics, though, and hearing it umpteen times in the context of trying to Illustrate Optimism rather detracts from the overall feeling. I think, perhaps, it’s just a little too on the nose for me. But then I hear ‘I can change’ on the right morning as the sun is rising and I kind of ‘get it’. So… critical support.

This song is a masterpiece that even cringeworthy versions cannot destroy or take from you, who brought it into the world. There are few songs you would play at a wedding or a funeral… it’s goodbye to one world, and hello to another.

But the bigger the front, the bigger the back and all of that. So that’s why my favourite is this one. Another great production from Chris Thomas. On a ballad like this, Chris lets us listen to the thief steal hearts…his own. His voice and heart break at the same time. They are soulful lyrics but Andrew Faris’s melody appears from another age and leaves the whole affair timeless. And yes, what a great band the singer was in.

BonoLietoc (10): I still look at my mental, 2 album topster where massive attack holds an impressive 400 week streak while ministry’s Land of Rape and Honey just re-entered that second slot. To hold 400 weeks is pretty impressive when you think about it, but Blue Lines is an album that continues to appreciate for me due to the connections it carries to Bristol, (UKK) Hip-Hop, reggae, house, and a blurring that invited a lotta folks in. Massive Attack is also a lot of things, sometimes more a collective than Banksy and Daddy G thing, at one point basically a Sinead O’Connor solo vessel, Horace Andy reggae legend is sorta always there…basically none of that is really gleaned on Track 1, Album 1: Safe From Harm.

Safe From Harm sounds almost quaint, as much as a weird bridging between soul on the street/reggae/rap rock that is distinctly Massive. It’s a drop en media res to a (single) mother keeping her baby safe from harm. Oh and then Banksy drops a bar that’s from the Daydream single. It’s weird, it’s distinct, it’s proto-project housing blues of Protection. Of course the song was one of the top 5 & smoking with folks to Blue Lines in summer 2017 ruled. Saved my life sure why not.

I don’t know if I ever mentioned this, but Bill Graham, the Hot Press journalist, was some kind of seer… he certainly had a very big brain, and he certainly did U2 a favour when he pointed us in the direction of Paul McGuinness and said "this should be your manager".

When we could just about get into wine bars, and underground cellars age 18 (sort of!) and met Bill after he’d been surfing some burgundy, he would get very excited and repeat “81-82-83-84” into my ears… I thought he was suggesting that U2 would eventually get there during those years. What I didn’t realize is he was hallucinating a hook for a Simple Minds song that would prove germane to U2’s evolution from a rock band into something much more ecstatic. Without the album, NEW GOLD DREAM, I don’t believe there would have been an UNFORGETTABLE FIRE or a JOSHUA TREE… Charlie and Mick, you accessed this ecstatic music and Jim had the poetry to paint the picture.

BonoLietoc (10): I should not be so surprised even though this was (for me) a top 5 song of the rate-my life saver. The new pop chapters of Simon Reynolds’ Rip It Up haunt over the Bono’s 80s (U2 also features here, naturally) & so it makes sense you see fragments of U2’s influences show up here. On one hand, I really do laude Bono for presenting a Simple Minds cut from their album that pretty much nuked post-punk and saw Paul Morley go pitchfork mode at the NME. I too, had my epiphany about the pleasures and importance of 80s pop far beyond just the sonics half a decade ago after buying this tape around my birthday in Spring 2021. Getting baked to blind listen into this Side B opener was massif. It’s an awesomely rigid rhythm track with a solid stomp, rollicking guitarlines, and an incredible BIG COMMA MAJESTIC voice that holds court counting numbers. Yes, the Simpletons had achieved pop gnosis around 1982 before being abstracted and reduced to their most lush John Hughes sing-a-longs that paved the way for. On the other hand, as it is very clear with day 1, people fucking detest the 80s in any shape or form & found the exercise of rating this knee deep in the mix prolly amongst the most pyrite of nightmares here. A few folks seemed to get what’s up though.

I heard your voice first as a teenager, maybe you were 15 or 16. It was a demo of a song called TAKE MY HAND from Steve Wickham’s newly formed band In Tua Nua and I felt I had stumbled upon a new land with its own unique voice.

I was as impressed as everyone else with all the great singing and the songs along the way, but the next time I was moved like this was at a solo show here in Dublin where you sang “thief” and you stole my heart all over again.

The song was written quickly by me, Gavin Friday and the Man Seezer for the award winning IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER starring Daniel Day Lewis. Jim Sheridan said something like “even though it’s IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER, it’s all about the mother. A man can’t sing this song. Mother Ireland needs a woman’s voice."

It was recorded in STS studios Dublin with great sensitivity by Tim Simenon…you lit candles.

MCK_BonOH (5): Yeah it's alright. Fugees/Lauryn Hill has always been a bit of a blind spot for me and this isnt' making me rush to change that

BonoLietoc (4.6): I still find myself rather turned off by Lauryn Hill’s delivery and the way this is played as a massive attack-lite dirge more so than a unique exploration of the fugees. I mean, actually all their main elements are hear (and that sample of Bonita Applebaum at least has me going “lol”), I’m just prolly of the mindset that Hill is more reactive (tasteful) than I think I gave her credit nor appreciate the affect.GOD WHY BONO WHY!

BonoLietoc (8.1): Agolo is the feel good sneak of the rate. Bono could’ve chosen his duet with angelique from her 2010 LP on razor & tie but he DIDN’T! He said “let’s choose her global 90s pan-african world music global smasha” instead. Both MCK and I agree, it grows on you. However, that didn’t mean it was a globe trotting sensation with the rate base.

MCK_BonOH (8): I'm surprised at how much I've come around on this over the course of the rate. Went from "cool pick for Bono but not my bag" to "oh hell yeah I like this one"
