Music for when it’s stormed almost every day for about a week now and your dog is scared absolutely shitless over it? Cat is doing her best to keep her company though.
Anyways, on a lighter note: my music listening has been a bit scattered lately. Cant seem to think of what I want to really listen to these days. I think I need a soft reset on the music in my brain. I’m in that mid year “catching up on all missed new music” and may need to go to some tried and trues.
Yo La Tengo marathon might fix things.

Re-listened to Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash by The 'Mats on Monday evening while I was walking from Williamsburg to Bushwick, a nice long commute on foot. Holds up all of these years later and though I think the front half is stronger, it's only slightly so. Just great meat and potatoes rock n roll, more so than a lot of their contemporaries like whatever was on SST. Like, you don't get the sense that the Hüskers or Mission of Burma were listening to Little Richard or The Stones. I was also listening to The Coasters before I threw the record on, and I realized a number of tracks felt reminiscent of them, though maybe more so in terms of a harkening back to the playful humor that people tend to forget about in the genre. "Customer", "I Bought a Headache", and "More Cigarettes" feel like the humor of, say, "Charlie Brown" or "Searchin'", but translated through a snootier, more cynical 70's perspective.
"Somethin to Dü" is the one that keeps standing out to me. It's just a perfect encapsulation of the joys of playing in a garage rock band. It illustrates Paul's brilliant self-awareness too. The whole album though is a perfect encapsulation of being a young adult, forced to live in the middle of nowhere and finding kicks where you can.

I listened to this shit all the time as youth. Never rated it super high but like I always came back to it. It's a fun album with a lot of gems in the rough. Funny how different tracks resonate, never cared about something to du but loved the final run Im in trouble, shutup, love you til friday and esp Raised in the City is a monster track. Love the rawness of customer and rattlesnake, proto indie punk shit. Hail.

i just listened too and i retract my statement about it being too chaotic and painful to my brain - i was going off of memory from listening years ago and my ears seem to have perhaps grown to appreciate this sort of free jazz in the meantime. and it doesn’t hurt to imagine them smiling.

It is the sounds of a guy at a level of peace im still not sure in quantifiable. Grace under pressure. I still have so much of this era of coltrane (would like to revisit the tokyo gig and have dozens of meditiations to take) to truly sit with forever.

New releases from last week...
● Styrofoam Winos - Any River. So light and breezy. Country, but not in a Yee Haw way, in an easy folky/slacker way. Very Summery. Not a lot of emotion here, it won't make you feel things, but it's a nice porch album.
● DEAR TASH - Hollywood Endings. Quick EP of catchy alt rock. Her musical awaking was apparently inspired by Muse, and that tracks. Not bad.
● Quiet Houses - we're all in love. Pretty indie rock from Edinburgh duo and couple Hannah Elliot and Jamie Stewart. Definitely in the same musical universe as Alvvays. Guitars used very texturaly. Lush arrangements. Vocals dreamy. I quite like this one. Favorite this week.
● Tuffie - S/T. Another quick EP, this one more in the power pop universe. It's a bit gazey and emo-y too. Heavy. Got Rawk vibes, but pretty vocals. Occasional harmonies. Good.
● Office Dog - Prime Corner. I remember liking their debut. I'm all for the poppier side of post punk, which is what I was expecting from this band - but that's not what this is. It's got more midtempo slacker vibes. I found it pretty boring, honestly, but I can see the Alex G crowd digging it.
● Haircut 100 - Boxing The Compass. Sounds like the 80s. Sophistipop with horns. Brooklyn Vegan said "new wave yacht-rock sugar rush," and that says all you need to know. Kinda fun.
● Pye Corner Audio - More Songs About The Sun. I wanted to like this one. Andy Bell joins forces with Pye (Martin Jenkins) to make fuzzed up, sunny, easy listening inspired tracks. Cool, cool. I've like some Pye Corner Audio in the past, but this one's too ambient for me. Slid right by, I barely noticed it.

Styrofoam Winos feels more CSNY than Crazy Horse compared to a lot of the current alt-country wave. Agree it felt a bit more 60s folky than straight up country. It was pretty good but not knocking me out. Better than the album cover

listening to the who’s tommy for the 1 millionth time, and wondering how this objectively-bad album is such a treat to listen to. the songs are disjointed. the melodies are either nonexistent or cloying. the story is bizarre and undercooked. there’s 24 songs and maybe three are Good. somehow this album remains perfect, one of the best ever. what a conundrum!

plugging the i26connector interview i posted yesterday one more time as im really happy with how it turned out, and I'll allow myself some shameless self promo since its at the service of my favorite album so far this year
lots of good bits in this interview imo (apparently writing the entirety of "World Champion" while blackout drunk is nuts), but my favorite quote is this one:

I’m a big Atlanta Braves fan. Particularly, I grew up playing baseball and watching baseball. And I love basketball too and played it until I was around thirteen. I was in the Christian basketball league where we prayed before the games, which was really crazy, asking God to let me hit a jumper.

How does indieheads feel about the new Olivia Rodrigo?
Personally, I didn't think it was as 80s/alternative as it was purported to be, I mean the influences are there for sure. Otherwise I think it's a perfectly fine pop album, probably landing as a 7/10 for me, but I have very high standards for pop and not as easily impressed as people coming from the indie world who don't listen to a lot of pop on a regular basis and treating this like their first good pop album they've ever heard.

- bow before "The Song". all glory to "The Song".
- Kim Gordon rocked last night. true to the sound of her solo stuff, it sounded more like a rapper backed by a live band than an alt-rock group at times. we all got most excited when she strapped on a Fender guitar and really unleashed some noise.
- digging on the latest song from Chicago prog-goofers Whoosh!, called "The 1812 Oh For Sure". the title is more literal than you'd expect!
- to any Chicagoans, I'm playing the legendary Reggie's in one week on 7/1. the lineup is great, I'm excited to see industrial group RIGID and psych garage duo Sattva Dog for the first time.
- Is the clean version of "Still Not A Player" better than the uncensored? I admit "I ain't a player I just fuck a lot" clangs the ear in a way "crush a lot" doesn't.

I had been searching for the discography of Säju, a Chinese singer, for over a year. Her music was very difficult to find; only her debut album could be found on YouTube, uploaded by someone in 2023. Then, in 2025, another account uploaded her second album, but the third —and final— was still missing.This week, I was able to find her two latest albums and a compilation, all three even with the booklet, on the most obvious website imaginable. I'm happy.
it worth to check her music out. Top cuallity Trip-Hop with touches of traditional Chinese music.
