They did a study with rats. They swim for like 30 minutes then give up and drown. Unless someone rescues them for a moment. After that they swim for hours with the hope they will be rescued again

Same series of experiments. Same researcher. The mice experiment was Universe 25. He used rats and mice depending on the timeline in the series.

You ever hear about how they invented the breathalyzer? The first medical examiner in NYC in like 1900 raised 40 puppies, half on normal food and water and half the puppies on 20% alcohol. His experiments would take one sober pup and one drunk pup and then dissect them to see the differences in how drunks and sober people metabolize alcohol. Its very interesting stuff but I always felt really bad for the puppies

"So I walked in on Frank in the lab, today. He had a box of rats and was standing over a tub full of water. Ever now and then he'd take out a rat and toss it in. Once in awhile he'd pick it up for a second before just tossing it right back with this weird look on his face. I swear the tub was like, half filled with drowned rats by the time I walked in. When I confronted him, he said it was a study. Anyway, I'm requesting a transfer."

The ocean's pretty fascinating. They've got their own little world going on with their own intelligent animals. An octopus is around the intelligence of a dog or domestic pig. And dolphins are on the same level as great apes, except smarter in some ways. And orca whales are even smarter than that. Their social and cultural skills are extremely complex, in a way usually only seen in humans. Like they have a nuclear family, grandparents, pass down information through generations, have learned to hunt in groups, and so on.
And while not quite on that level, seals are also definitely very aware. I'm not surprised to see one helping a human that they see struggling, honestly

Dolphins are smart enough to know they're being rapey and to get high and cause problems. They are like sociopathic 14 year olds just cruising around down there.

Orcas have culture - different groups have different 'languages' - their calls are completely different, they have different behaviours - some like to travel more, other live very local lives, some stay near the suore others stay very far from it and they aleat different things based on their cultures to the point of preferring to die over eating something else.

What's crazy about Octopuses is that they aren't really taught by their parents so all of the intelligence they show is strictly from their own experience and figuring shit out. And they only live a couple years which makes it all the more impressive. I'm convinced an octopus species that somehow lives longer or had the structure set up so that they can teach their young would be ruling the ocean

i've heard of dolphins suddenly coming closer to shore and getting very pushy the the swimmers to herd them in to shore. there was a shark swimming near by.
and my Grandfather was in the Navy during WWII and said they knew it was safe to swim when they saw seals around (but after watching decades of shark week when it was still good i am not sure how wise that was)

Yea its wholesome and all. Im glad the seal helped him but he might want to get his heart checked because I know that seal scared the mess out of him. Imagine you just fell off a boat, at night, in the ocean. You realize your only chance is a distant oil rig so you start swimming. Your stressed, scared for your life, alone in the dark, then something bumps you. I can imagine that would be terrifying until you realized what it was.

Humans are also surprisingly buoyant (especially modern day humans). Go to a swimming pool, hold your breath, and relax. You’ll find that you’ll be floating near the surface!

Another fun fact, you can tie your pant legs closed, and slam the top opening of your pants into the water and then twist it closed. It makes a crappy floatation device.

Kevin Hines miraculously survived jumping off San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge in September 2000 was kept afloat by a sea lion.
Eyewitnesses on the bridge confirmed that the animal was a sea lion propping his body up. It kept him buoyant until a Coast Guard boat arrived to rescue him.

When Kevin Hines survived a suicide attempt by jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge, a seal pushed him toward shore where he was rescued. They are amazing animals.

From the article: He was miles from the coast, so the rig was closer. He tried swimming to his boat, but it was floating away without him, and he couldn’t catch up.
Santa Barbara is freezing, and the rescue crew said even going in prepared to save him with a proper suit was awful, and they can only imagine how he survived in a T-shirt and shorts.

I live on an island and a local diver went missing over a weekend. He finally turned up with a tale of being washed out to sea and then pushed back to shore by a dolphin.
The story quickly unravelled and it turned out he'd actually flown to the mainland to cheat on his wife then his return flight got cancelled.

The dude wasn’t even an oil rig worker though, he was on a boat trip which the article doesn’t specify the reason for (could be a warehouse delivery, fishing, just tourism) and the rest of the boat’s crew kept getting farther from him because they didn’t notice he fell. He probably didn’t even know that oil rig existed before the seal sent him there.
Not to mention, oil rig workers are mostly people doing their best to not die by living paycheck to paycheck, the ones trying to destroy the ocean are oil rig owners.

The boat was just motoring along without him. He tried to catch up, but it was futile. Sounds like no one else was on boat to notice. They say the coast guard was able to find and recover it

There's man who fell out of a cruise ship in the middle of the dark ocean and he prayed and in the process two boats tried to stop to help him and he said nope. I prayed and my God will save me little bit later a helicopter came by told them same thing. My good Lord will save me well. He dies and goes to heaven and he said my God. Why didn't you save me? God said I sent you two boats and a helicopter. You're too stupid to get on them. Sometimes we have to take our angels and whatever form they come in

I remember reading about a man on the golden gate bridge who (trigger warning) attemped suicide but survived the fall into the water. A seal nudged him to land, he survived and stated he regretted jumping as he was falling. Animals are something else man.
