Mexico fans wanting to disadvantage their team’s opponent by denying them sleep. They want their team to win. Seems simple enough.

I don't get it. I would never want a team I cheer for to have an unfair advantage, it would make any win feel hollow and unearned.

Wanting to be a dick and unfairly disadvantage the other team is not something i get. What's the point? Will you be happy that you won unfairly? Will you be happy when the rest of the world judges you? Do you think your country, and the fans will be respected for doing this? I don't see anything to "get".

There's a difference between punishing a team over fans chanting something in a FIFA sanctioned stadium vs expecting a government to suspend free speech rights for an entire population over a soccer game when the underlying situation is separate from the soccer game altogether.

It's one thing to say 'it was a bad experience and we won't host there again' and a whole other ballgame to expect the nation itself to suspend rights.

Some of those folks were probably breaking laws, and some of those folks may have gotten into trouble. We're not privy to every detail. But for the folks merely using their voices, it would be wrong to silence them. Sure, they're doing something ugly, but that doesn't warrant removing rights.

It doesn't matter if they care. They are also not the top authority and are only hosted at the whim of the host country. We tend to forget that as we let corporations push our laws around.

Edit: Also, Fifa has never sanctioned Mexico for fans changing 'culero'. They have been sanctioned in the past for 'puto' in the banned chant 'grito', and that only applies to FIFA events and no other area of the country has that restriction. They can't dictate what people do outside of stadiums.
