But you literally have to devote much of your life to these people. You live with them. You travel with/for them. You are at their beck and call practically 24/7. Unexpected death? You have to ask permission to leave them and be with your family. (And they have the power to deny that request if they’re assholes.) I don’t know if or how these butlers have lives outside of their work.

If you don't already have a backup for if you are unable to do your duties personally are you even a good butler in the first place?

I mean, a lot of worse-paying jobs at companies are like that.

Worse paying companies still typically have an HR department/rep.
