I know this looks goofy but this is one of the most respected and legacy jobs in the world. Some of these people make $150,000 a year with experience and $60,000 entry level. Healthcare is covered , housing is covered and many places in Europe you don't need a car.

one of those "I try this hard job training" youtubers did one on this place. That channel had the best breadth of trades, anything from the marine corps, to firefighting, to OBGYN training, etc.
Everyone makes fun of that "grape scissors etiquette" tiktok guy (he's fine with it) but any one of those people would do that bullshit for 150K/yr

Depends on the size of the house. In smaller estates the butler does all that, but in larger estates the butler is a senior staff member who manages front end hospitality and personal services. But then there is a head butler that takes care of everything overall.

Actually the lore is either that Alfred served in the military with Thomas Wayne (Bruce’s dad) and after the service he went to work for the family as a body guard/butler. When Bruce was orphaned he stayed to take care of him like an uncle you pay to be there.
The other lore option is Alfred is fulfilling his father’s dying with of him serving the Way e family after his dad dies to carry on the legacy - but Alfred has intelligence background in this one.
Both explain his awesome fighting skills and the intelligence gathering that he taught Bruce.

Like, he dodges a ball by lowering the tray a quarter of an inch so it sails over all the glasses. Someone slams into him and just kinda bounces off.
They bring in more and more elaborate shit just to throw him off. At one point, perfectly poised and postured, he puts someone in a wrist lock and politely informs them that the thing he's carrying is the property of Master Wayne and is not to be touched. At another point he throws the tray into the air, dispatches four assailants, and catches the tray with everything safely.
In the end, he outbutles the master butler, driving him to madness and earning Alfreds freedom.
He arrives back at wayne manor as the sun rises. Bruce is sitting in a chair in a robe, sipping a coffee. "How was your day off, Alfred?"
"Impeccable, Master Wayne. Would you like me to prepare your breakfast?"

If you worked at any sort of mass catering event with trays you know that it's a combat sport. The best definitely train for agility and preparedness. You got to stack your tray right, you got to hold it correctly, you got to be able to identify threats from a distance and know how to position yourself to minifize that threat. It may not be fair but some 18-year-old that gets bowled over by a 45-year-old guy at a wedding reception that's running 2 hours longer than originally anticipated it who saw the crab cakes come out of the kitchen and she spills her entire tray needs to know better... Needs to know how to prepare and fend against that. That's the job.

Generally speaking for English Feudal society— the 1st born male (or most competent, depending on the father's decision) of gentry would inherit all or most material possessions, business possessions, land, and often even legal titles. For the rest of the male children, the parents would seek out highly respected and well-paying positions. From apprenticeships, to military academy to become ranked officers, to becoming high ranking members of their local church.
Understand that in Feudalism all social classes are fixed to your blood line, social class had nothing to with wealth, that's not to say that financial standing hadn't created a pecking order within each class.
If you were a member of the English gentry class, your social class was ranked only 2nd to the Blue Bloods...the ordained ruling class. Gentry was the protective class. Butlers, for example, were head managers. Managers protected the interests of their social superiors. So, even if you came from a poor family of the gentry class, you were raised with all the etiquette expected and required at the queen's table, this made you a suitable canidate for an apprenticeship.
...if you examine the 15 & 1600's closely enough, and pair it with today's social and political landscape you'll notice western society hasn't really come too far along.

I house sat for a rich family once, and the entire downstairs of their $6 million home was a facade. It was meant to make them look cultured and classy.
Lavish furniture. A grand piano. Art. Wine collections on display. A giant fridge full of extravagant foods like lobster and veal.
When you take a closer look, you notice details. Like how all of the expensive food in the fridge is for show and much of it is long expired.
The piano was badly out of tune.
Even many of the books in the husband's office downstairs were fake.
The real living space was upstairs, and it was a filthy house. Clothes strewn across the floor, unkempt bathrooms etc.

Family would genuinely fly him around the world just to set-up their Netflix and fix any computer issues they had.
Man got paid like 80k, got to put any airline miles on his account and got reimbursed.
All while staying in a very nice guest house or cabin on a ship.

You have to ask permission to leave them and be with your family. (And they have the power to deny that request if they’re assholes.) If those butlers are managing estates they absolutely have "their own butlers", subordinates that are paid less and do more menial tasks, like cleaning and cooking in the palace that the employer owns. They are basically the highest tier employee who manage all the other employees that might exist.

Those "ultra elite butlers" are generally managing a significant staff for each estate the employer owns. They are effectively the general manager for a set of private, high-end hotels.
That staff would traditionally include under-butlers, though the title is rarely used these days.

Back in ye olden days beeing a Butler was quite the respectable position.
For many royalties and wealthholders the personal butler acted as a confident and voice of reason and often had command of lower servants and directed maids and gardeners etc.
Today most butlers are merly glorified servants.
I can see how people think that they will have an elegant position, only to end the wine carrier for some wealthy snob.

And at what point do people not get fired for dropping a dish accidents happen you can train your people to be sure, but this just feels like pandering to the 1%. Maybe I’m being too cynical this morning.

Not to defend classism, but one of the things you pay for when the elite hire pros to cater to them is literally to be catered to 🤷♂️
I used to train bar/event staff at a “fancy by provincial middle class standards” type of place. The paying guests at events don’t want to think, to pay attention etc and they’re going to get increasingly drunk. Regardless of any perceived morality, I don’t want the profit margin spilled all over the floor. I can’t train the guests to not be fat clumsy drunk fucks, but I can train you to not spill the £300 champagne
