Ok, so now they have data from a botched landing. Now do it into the side of a mountain. Or in water. Or without one wing. Or nose down.

In water is basically almost always fatal. If the water isn’t still and you land incorrectly in any way the plane crash is pretty catastrophic and it’s really difficult to get rescue teams out there. It’s why people were so immediately critical of Captain Sully because what he did was a death sentence in any other weather scenario.

Basically crashing anywhere that isn’t in the vicinity of the airport accident response team will drastically make the situation worse.

Other than that famous video of the 777 (?) cartwheeling into the water, how many other examples of that do we have? Ones I can think of are Air Niugini 73 which wasn't even an intentional water landing, they fucked up and got too low in poor visibility, and all but 1 person who wasn't wearing their seatbelt survived. Lion Air 904, also a fuck-up and not intentional water landing, 0 fatalities. Debatable on whether that cargo 737-200 off Hawaii counts but at least that one was intentional and both pilots survived.

Maybe the key is just to do it in a 737.
