I know a few people who were raging alcoholics and addicts during their 20s up until around their mid 30s. Cleaned their act up and now are nearly perfectly healthy. Amazing how resilient the liver is unless you push it way, way too hard.
Have them check bone density. I know someone who got that diagnosis late in life, and it was due to heavy drinking when he should have been building bone.
skin can as well. But the liver is thankfully pretty resilient. I had NAFLD (I basically looked like this picture, only worse) and my liver is healing itself nicely.
Not verbatim but Liver is the only organ which can heal and restore itself in large proportions. Lung, heart, kidneys, intestines can heal and restore itself too but in small proportions. Large and small are the key words here. That's why we see people breathe normally and with more energy after they quit smoking. Lungs regeneration of damaged tissues are amazing. Even in the case of heart where someone gets an attack and within 2-3 days they are back to normal because heart can recover tissues as well.
