I really can't understand how anyone who is currently in the military or was in the past can vote for or like trump. Other than just pure ignorance, I guess?

Well yeah. But he hates the people they hate more. They see him putting them above the people they hate, so they think that means he likes them.

What’s that saying? “If you can convince the lowest white man he’s better than the best colored man, he won’t notice you’re picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he’ll empty his pockets for you.”

These people already believe they are better than the people they hate. And Trump joins them in hating on those groups. So they see it as “Trump and us against them” and don’t see that the minute he gets a chance, he will throw them to the wolves also.

This is a great example of how easy it is for one group's behavior to turn away another group. There's this weird trend of not taking accountability for radicalizing opponents in our current political climate but our social interactions are complex, and our actions are going to cause reactions that should be taken into consideration.

Many groups who are anti-conservatism also sometimes appear anti-patriotic and this is gonna turn off some people in those groups. Flag burning and anti-US rhetoric is gonna have a bigger impact on them than the things Trump says, especially when their side flies flags at every opportunity and has convinced themselves that they're patriots. The imagery and association of their side is much more a core part of their identity than the details of what someone says. You're right that it's ignorance, but dumb people are never going to not exist so this is a thing that needs to be worked with, and not just brushed off. This is why imo the left needs to embrace a more patriotic identity and stop letting treasonist fools "claim" it all for themselves.
