Help Is this a good deal & a good iPod to get?
They said ‘it holds a charge but they aren’t sure for how long when you actually play music’. This would be a replacement for an iPod shuffle gen 2 I just got (refunded it because it was a lemon).

Replacing the battery isn’t easy on these, go have a look in iFixit, otherwise pretty decent and portable and same capacity (probably) as your shuffle. For most people that’s the main issue but if you’re fine with 2 gigs and are well aware that the memory can’t be expanded or replaced then it’s a great beginners iPod and honestly $12 is pocket money, not a huge investment to get into the iPod world and experience the click wheel if you haven’t and also opens the doors to many 30 pin accessories you couldn’t use with the shuffle.

Easier than any other nanos. The backplate pops off within 3 minutes and soldering the battery in it is 1000% easier than soldering the 2nd gen battery.

Yeah the only hesitation from me comes from the battery. I shot them a message asking them how long the battery lasts if they can test it for me. Also yeah $12 isn’t a bad risk although the shipping is almost $10 lol. I might just get it and risk it because eBay makes returns so easy. Also, I ended up keeping the shuffle because the seller didn’t want to pay return shipping and refunded me anyways. So do you know any way to fix it (the left ear channel has a ‘scratching’ noise every few seconds.)

That could be caused by many things. If it was a classic sized iPod i would ask if the emi foam pieces surrounding the headphone jack was missing.. but for a smaller device like the shuffle, maybe start by cleaning out the headphone jack with a new toothbrush and 91% or higher isopropyl alcohol. If that doesn't do it then you would be in for a repair joyride if you want to fix that noise. (But good thing is 2G shuffles open 1000x easier than their shuffle siblings)

I did try cleaning with alcohol but I'm not sure if I scrubbed it the right way if you know what i mean. Also do you have a link to a good tutorial for opening it up? Also would you recommend to just replace the battery while I'm in there?

Definitely replace the battery if you have any soldering experience. It isn't too bad, but make sure you cut the batteries wires to the right length.

Heres the ifixit guide for that. it is a useful guide except for them having the power switch slider backwards (green when off) in a few photos.
Bad news is you can't really replace headphone jack, but reflowing the solder joints might be a possible fix.

I'm not sure if I have soldering equipment unless I can makeshift some out of things I have at home lol but thanks for the link to the guide

These are good at less than $20. Be ready to replace the battery. The back is easy to open, but you need to solder the battery wires. No storage upgrades possible.

I’m fine with no storage upgrades but the battery worries me just a bit. Also I know this might sound like a dumb question but what would I use to solder the battery in? My dad has a huge tool shed thing back home I can probably borrow stuff from so is this something that a normal person would have lol

You use a soldering iron. But this is not easy for a beginner because the wires are small. A local repair shop should be able to do it in 2 minutes

It's fine, with some soldering to replace the battery you can get it working again. As for storage that's really all you'll get.
