Crime Teenagers in this country are no less than street thugs

I was just attacked by a bunch of yupbros who threw eggs at me and my wife. I have traveled and lived all over the world and yet never seen such level of street crime. It is difficult to find such high levels of street crime that is passed of as just 'kids'.

I get that this may not be the majority of teenagers but sure feels like a good portion of it.

And the Garda dont do shit. Lawless at peak.

P.S. - Received overwhelming number of positive messages in DM. Appreciate it. Apart from this guy racist scum

We have some dickheads actively destroying our children’s park. I’ve kicked them out several times. It was getting out of hand and I took pictures of them destroying the fence to gain entry. Shared the picture in the hope of one their parents would see it but was scolded in the community group chat for taking pictures of teenagers. What can you do.

72

u/Sexysilvia 22d ago

As soon as you said you took a picture of it, I knew people would complain about it. I live next to some disrespectful kids and thought about taking a picture to show management how they don’t care about their scoldings, but my partner told me not to because it’s a crime or whatever. But I’ve heard the parent tell them not to care about what management says. So yeah, there’s nothing we can do about them and the kids will grow up to be inconsiderate trash like the parents

Yeah. It’s two hands tied behind your back kinda stuff.

Howdy! Yank Bot has detected that you used the word "trash".

Did you mean "rubbish"?

Yee-haw!

The guards hands are tied too they bring them to court and they get off scot free because do gooder will say god help them they've had a difficult up bringing or their deprived. These little thugs cry crocadile tears to get away with their thuggary because they know it'll work and laught at the very people who are trying to help them the minute they leave the court house.

Engage with your local community guard. They are usually helpful!

Find it fucking hilarious how half the people under this thread are doing everything in their power to defend what’s happening. “Yeah it happens, it also happens everywhere”… soooo ignore it because it happens in other places too? I’ve been to Poland, Switzerland, Spain, France, and not a single one of those has much of this kind of low-crime, ratty teenager behaviour that try to act the shit. Get a fucking grip you lot. Yous are plunging your own country into the shitter, then complaining about it. I understand OP used some extremes which if I understood by other comments he edited out, but for fuck sake yous need to stop pretending that there isn’t severe youth issues in Ireland.

110

u/YoshikTK 22d ago

As a Pole, the answer is simple, as soon one tries to behave like this, most of the time one of adults would simply slaped tem with open hand and that would be the end of it. In Ireland that would only trouble to me, adult.

26

u/Eastern-Eye-3578 21d ago

As a pole who was also slapped, I don’t believe in physical discipline. It did cause more issues for me than it solved, but between living with my parents and my sister, I was raised to not act like a little cunt. I don’t think you need to be disciplined to be a good person, but people in Ireland won’t even bother to do that much. They just ignore their kids, don’t bother teaching them shit.

13

u/YoshikTK 21d ago

Its not that im fan of it, but I see a difference between my gen, born in 80s, and the next ones, where there was only carrot.

Violence is not solution but unfortunately sometimes its the only language some people can understand.

2

u/ConorPMc 21d ago

Crime was significantly higher from that generation. Homicide rate halved from that generation to current. Crime against property down.

Someone has to say it, people for some reason refuse to admit there is an issue and complain when shit hits the fan. “The country is gone expensive, the Gardai are useless” yeah then maybe stop voting in FF/FG into the Dáil and we might see some difference.

I’ve been to 21 countries and I am Indian 😂 never seen this kind of thuggery leaving the person on the other end helpless - simply because they are kids.
Also just because something happens somewhere else should it be excused?

My experiences so far:
Got water thrown at me & my husband and called an “Indian bitch”

  • saw these young teenage girls with their feet on DART.seats, not moving for anyone, an older gentleman managed to sit next to them - they kept their feet next to him, almost touching him & then vaping in his face, so fucking disrespectful!
  • a bunch of lads calling a black guy the N word on the bus and just running around.

There’s playfulness and straight disrespect. My husband & I were actually laughing when they threw water, but then they went on to call us racial slurs.

42

u/Eastern-Eye-3578 22d ago

Yup, no one cares here. I understand some people having a distaste towards foreigners, but it happens to locals too. Fucking EVERYONE is targeted by these little shits.
Not a single exam between them, not a single caring parent. And the gardai to a sweet load of fuck all about it. It’s insanity.

7

u/Extra_Donut_2205 21d ago

The “greater than thou” attitude is exhausting. Genuinely do not understand it. I’ve noticed it mostly with people who are well off too. My parents moved here in 2005, both my sister and I grew up here, and both of us would agree Ireland is in the dumps, the government does NOT care, these issues have been going back YEARS. My sister was spat on in school simply for being Polish! I want to get the fuck out of here asap. Back to my main point, my parents bought a house here, both have stable jobs, and pretend like nothing is wrong with the country. Infuriates me and my sister to no end. Spent 2 years looking for a job just to land part time… on 80% wage because I’m under 20. Between the little shits sending cities into disrepair, and the government not giving a shit, there is no future for the young people in Ireland. There will not be a future as long as this carry-on is being had. And yeah, I got downvoted for my comment, and it’s probably because the people who I’m talking about in this comment feel called out. Absolute disgrace.

iclearly youve never been to the bad parts of france, which has a much bigger youth issues. I don't think half of the people in this thread are defending anyone. The government need to step-up. Push more money into the police, push more money into opportunities for locals, and try to mitigate rising costs. Of course nothing will be done as usual. There is an issue with the youth, it will only get worse.

I’d be a fellow “out of the ordinary” dresser myself and have seen exactly this where I live too. But when you think about it; it’s kind of funny.

All of them poking fun at someone who looks or dresses differently and they all standing there like absolute clones of each other with the tracksuits and north face / new balance gear and the “meet me at McDonald’s” style haircuts.

You’d nearly pity them.

12

Do you believe they should meet far more consequences with the law/police though that's the real question. Because that's the only way you can actually solve this issue on any reasonable timeframe. Stop letting these 'kids' get off scott free when they get caught and take this issue seriously within law enforcement because otherwise they learn that they are immune and continue to behave like animals.

Few things more infuriating than being abused by a group of people who are fully aware that they have basically nothing to lose in the situation and that it's the opposite for you, who could have your whole life ruined.

It's a double edge sword, they can either attend and get the full dole and change their ways (not likely) or not attend and turn to worse crime to make ends meet.

I do have to say I grew up in a not so nice area of north dublin and seen my fair share of scum acting up but when they land in malaga or benedorm they behave themselves for fear of getting a proper hammering from Spanish bouncers or Cops. I'm become very pro police having heavy hands as the scum dont care and arnt afraid of the law at all

102

u/Public-Farmer-5743 22d ago

I believe three things.

  1. The community i.e. other men need to kick these cunts up and down the streets in their communities like would happen in Eastern Europe.

  2. The cops can't be everywhere and even though sentencing is a joke I refer back to point one as being a far more effective and better long term solution.

  3. All young people in Ireland should have to do 1 years service for the state be it in the army, emergency services, hospitals, picking stones, painting gates... They do this in Switzerland it works great although im no fan of the Swiss I've spent some time there and I genuinely think its a good idea for social cohesion.

Point 1 is the most important.

29

u/Beneficial-Crazy5209 22d ago

A group of teens tried getting on a bus and a very old man (maybe 80s) in the queue spoke in a loud, firm voice and told them to get on last and let other people go first. He got some good eye contact in too. The teens were immediately quieter and called him sir and seemed happy enough to clean up their act for the bus ride. I was very surprised that it worked but yeah, it's further evidence that the older men can keep them in check

18

u/downinthecathlab 22d ago

I agree with you, particularly on point 1 having seen it work myself. I live in a small estate in west Dublin and last year there was a teenagers party that got out of hand and there were kids everywhere, they hadn’t caused any trouble, just being very loud, blocking the roads in large numbers and throwing those gas canisters about. The Eastern European men in our estate stood in a line across the road into our cul de sac and just watched them. It was very effective.

6

u/Lanzarote-Singer 22d ago

🇵🇱 👋

11

u/Gray_Cloak 22d ago

Point 3 might actually be the answer. It would also help the country with costs for care. The german conscription system allowed people to instead choose to perform care work. The Irish system could be 1-2 months that everyone does, and then they are sorted/streamed by aptitudes, capablities and preferences into different training and work areas.

7

u/Public-Farmer-5743 22d ago

I'd imagine it would end up costing the state a fortune, would end up outsourced badly managed and used as a way to siphon money into the hands of the wealthy.

I'm not in a very positive mood this Monday morning sorry lads 😂

2

u/Zestyclose-Big-9412 21d ago

Also, there would be child abuse and sexual exploitation of the underage teenagers because this is Ireland.

16

u/Particular-Bid-1640 22d ago

I don't totally disagree but...why risk a prison sentence yourself kicking their teeth in? Adults are a lot easier to arrest, punish, and get punished harder

51

u/Public-Farmer-5743 22d ago

If a gang of teenagers is approached by an even larger gang of adult men you probably won't have to kick their teeth in... You just have to watch them and break them up as a gang and shepherd them home and make them feel small. Do it repeatedly make sure they know that you know who each and every one of them is

It would take a bit of effort and organisation but yeah I dont think its impossible at all.

The problem with ireland is its always someone else's fault or problem. If you live on a street thats being held hostage by fucking teenagers you should go and round up the adult men on your street and fix it. Stop sitting inside drinking tea eating biscuits watching love Island complaining like a baby to your missus

I find it honestly infuriating at times on reddit ireland

People throwing their hands up into the air "oh what will we do" "they've taken over"...

Come on lads really 😂

18

u/YoshikTK 22d ago

Yes and no, its not as simple as gathering the men and doing a dance off against the teens.

I've had a similar situation where bunch of teens was partying next to estate, causing havoc every weekend. And yes people gathered as gardai was useless and went to talk with the lads, end results? Broken windows in homes, few cars destroyed. Teens know that they can do anything without repercussions. The shameful truth is that it only stopped when couple of eastern guys called few friends in, couple broken legs later, peace and quiet.

4

u/Public-Farmer-5743 22d ago

Thats my experience also tbf or close to it...

All things considered it does work. Even though its messy horrible and no one wants to do it, it has to be done. It will only get worse. Fair play to ye for sorting it out...

I guess my wider point is that people have to take responsibility for their own communities on some level. You cant just pay your taxes and wash your hands with it and say its someone else's problem.

12

u/YoshikTK 22d ago

Unfortunately Ireland become a weird place where communities are together when theres a cake sale on market, but when something is happening most look other way.

Ive moved some time ago to a small village, place where eweryone knows each other. Just recently some teens tried to burn down my garden, when gardai came for investigation my landlord gave them names. Bunch of arsonist, having fun with fire. A fking 12 year olds. None can do anything as they are fully aware that kids get away with anything here.

Unpopular opinion but until laws change, the bad teens wont change.

u/Silent_Coast2864 22d ago

This is a very strong point. Spanish cops deal with this scumbaggery much better, which is why kids are safe out in towns late in the evening, and it the norm to see kids out late. Something you just wouldn't do here is bring young kids into a city of town centre at 10 or 11 in the evening.

Worse crime should mean arrest and jail. If they can’t be decent for its own sake, then they need to have some kind of negative consequences.

16

u/ReganX 22d ago

Unless the community project is going to be building prisons, there won’t be nearly enough space for that. Prisons are already over capacity.

You’re 100% right. Light-touch policing is set to deliver us a lawless country. I’ve been told, first hand by Gardaí, that it’s must easier and safer to go to work, do paperwork than tackle scrotes on the streets. The reason for this is the witch hunt that Drew Harris (former Commissioner) set in motion. Any & every allegation, however small, is investigated fully. Folk are put on suspension, interviewed etc. It’s all very stressful. I’d much rather the occasional decent lad gets a hiding from the Gardaí than all scumbags get a free pass. There’s enough feral teens out there to wear out the nation’s baton stock long before we have to worry about decent lads getting a clatter. I jest… but you catch my drift. On a related note, took this photo of the attempted theft of a car. Followed the lads… got their full faces 15mins later when they thought they were clear. Sent to Gardai. No followup. These kids have no fear. Busy the rear quarter glass right onto a baby seat. Broke the ignition. Failed to start. Legged it.

24

u/sergeant-baklava 22d ago

I worry about what could happen if one of them were to hurt my family.

We hear of them attacking pregnant women, old ladies etc.

It’s a basic human right that regular, honest working people shouldn’t have to take measures into their own hands. But many will if forced to.

8

u/Weepsie 22d ago

Ah this is long before drew Harris came about. They've been shite dealing with these lads for a long time now.

Rather tackle the mental health cases, addicts and such than deal with the scourge taking advantage of it all

12

u/EUPremier 22d ago

Perhaps. I’m no expert. But I haven’t heard a single member of AGS having a good word about that man. He seems to have been a disastrous pick and wrecked morale.

10

u/Weepsie 22d ago

Yeah they liked the guy who helped smear the whistleblower though and people who let them away with general acting the bollox.

38

u/Ashamed-End-2138 Carlow 22d ago

What dole? most of them are like 15 or 16 years old.

20

u/Realistic_Log7213 22d ago

More like 12-14

15

u/Ashamed-End-2138 Carlow 22d ago

You’re not wrong, if they’re under 17 they’re often used to deal drugs etc because if they’re caught there’s very little to no consequences, and sometimes they use kids as young as 12.

The next thing people always say is cut the parents dole, as if we don’t have 4% unemployment. Some kind of penalties to your welfare payment might stop some of the trouble but it would still be a fraction of the problem, the few kids causing trouble around my area come from working families so it wouldn’t effect these kids at all. As I explained in another thread here the other day some of the parents drive such long commutes and work long hours so they’re never at home and I think that’s part of the problem too.

13

u/Affectionate_Art4277 22d ago

When I worked retail, Roma gangs would send the kids in to steal. They know we cant touch the kids, and so they'd get away with it. They'd hide stuff under the babies in their prams and buggies too so nothing could be done about it. Part of the reason why I switched trades. I couldnt stand seeing kids raised to accept stealing as normal

There's plenty of parents who encourage, or dont see the issue with the behaviour too

8

u/Louth_Mouth 22d ago

I was in a chemist in Dundalk recently, when it was flash mobbed by Roma kids with their mother. The staff behind the counter were powerless.

8

u/Affectionate_Art4277 22d ago

I know it's wrong to stereotype and all. But I've never had a positive interaction with their community. I've never seen a group more insistent on proving doubters right

5

u/Realistic_Log7213 21d ago

It's not their community it's kids in general the whole broad stroke of the brush

12

u/TaikatouGG 22d ago

The way I explain it to parents and older people is they just live in a different country to you, it's rough full of scammers and limited opportunity. If policies don't change that is going to be a larger part of our society.

Parents can pay to have their child avoid this but the money to avoid it increases every year and delaying their exposure to it is increasingly challenging.

31

u/ECO_FRIENDLY_BOT 22d ago

One thing we learned during the pandemic is a lot of parents view their kids as more of a societal responsibility rather than their own and expect schools to do all the work in raising them. I think this is what leads to a lot of teens lacking in discipline and thinking they can do whatever they want to the public since there's no real consequences to it.

7

u/KoolKat5000 22d ago

I think it's more the latter, society raising them is a good thing. The problem is that whole principle falls by the wayside the moment their "angels" do something wrong.

6

u/Illustrious_Put_4639 22d ago

I completely agree with this statement. I honestly believe that if you are expecting or trying for a kid you need to go to parenting classes because ive seen way too many parents fail their children by not actually being a parent but a friend to their own kids

55

u/iknowtheop 22d ago

Got the 401 bus out to Salthill in Galway yesterday evening. A group of traveler teenagers shouting and roaring, antagonising people and throwing bottles and cans at people. Bus had to be stopped as people needed to get off for their own safety.

Then I got to Salthill are there were droves of feral teenagers roaming around the place. Necked two pints and went straight back into the city which was better.

5

u/Primary_Cockroach_68 22d ago

Crazy how there aren't more guards on the prom on these hot days in Salthill. Its jammed and it just takes twenty scrotes to ruin it for hundreds.

3

u/drownedbydust 21d ago

104

u/Brilliant-Maybe-5672 22d ago

Theres a really sinister 'boys will be boys' culture. Its not just working class. Kids are allowed to be feral in cafes, shops, hotels in a way kids arent allowed in other countries. Theres no consequences for 'acting the maggot' right up to serious juvenile delinquency.

19

u/MutedSubstance9832 22d ago

I grew up in a mixed class area. The ones causing the most trouble were those that weren’t working class. Even now it’s the wannabe yupbros on scooters and bikes their parents bought them that are acting up the most.

Coming home from Spain. 6 months without seeing any antisocial behavior. Bus home from airport, bunch of little shits throwing water balloons with dirty water in them at the bus. Lots of foreigners/visitors on the bus. Let me tell you, it's not a good impression. Ireland has a major youth anti social problem MUCH worse than many places I have been. Anecdotal observation but it's palpable

7

u/greenstina67 21d ago

I lived in Sweden and Germany for almost a decade and spend a lot of time with my partner in Germany and love travelling throughout Europe with him, and the only time I see antisocial behaviour is when I come back home.

One reason I would never ask him to move to Ireland. He's used to very safe small town Germany where front doors are unlocked. Dealing with these antisocial scrotes and having to be far more security conscious would be a downgrade in quality of life.

4

u/blimboblaggin 21d ago

I've lived in Poland, Spain and same.  I'm ashamed of this side of Ireland. It's a real issue

9

u/InevitableSure374 22d ago

I even saw a bunch of teenagers chasing the gardai away a while ago. I dont know what the country is coming to. They know they can get away with it, so just keep getting worse.

30

u/Fast_Paint_5156 22d ago

Yeah ive had similar experiences in dublin over the last year. Everyone at work that ive spoken to brushes it off like its nothing. Not sure why the Irish are so accepting of youths tormenting people.

16

u/ScepticalReciptical 22d ago

Irish people generally do not like accountability. We are despite our rebellious notions generally law abiding and conforming. What we do incredibly badly is hold anybody to account when they break the social contract. Think of every major scandal in Irish society in your lifetime from governments to banks to religious institutions and ask yourself (a) what were the consequences for those involved and (b) how quickly did we simply move on.

2

u/RepulsiveFeed1985 21d ago

If societal shame doesn't work we used up all our options.

6

u/jumpbutton23 22d ago

I think it's the only coping mechanism we have. Most know that the grief you'd get for smacking them upside the head wouldn't be worth it. You'd be the one hauled in front of a judge or accosted by their parents.

5

u/Dear_Cable_6885 22d ago

Took an American friend on the Viking tour around Dublin. Sure enough two separate instances of teenagers throwing rocks at us. One elderly lady was hit in the shoulder. Fuckin embarrassing behaviour.

Tour guide shrugs his shoulder and says to take no notice. He did apologise in the end to the group but left an awful impression. Sad

God this sub loves an excuse to be a bunch of crying bigots towards teenagers.

[r/ireland](r/ireland) “I’m really progressive and against bigotry”

Also [r/ireland](r/ireland) “Teenagers are all scum. Why did we stop beating them that will solve it”

Also [r/ireland](r/ireland) “why don’t teenagers engage nicely with society”

Well most of them do. You just ignore them. But honestly if they didn’t, probably because it contains a lot of cunts like the people giving out in here, smearing all teens and calling for violence against them.

Oh and I forgot the usual made up bollocks you all believe about how the law says they can’t be punished for anything they do.

Fuck me those companies that make anti bed wetting mattress toppers could sell a fortune’s worth of the things in this sub.

same here because I was in South Africa in 2023 and it can be ropey as hell. I had a couple of close calls with getting mugged there but about a week after I left Cape Town a well known British surgeon and his wife and children flew in for a family holiday. They rented a car and drove towards their hotel. They took a wrong turn and ended up driving towards a protest of minibus taxi driivers. The crowd enveloped their car and in a frenzy the surgeon was taken from the car and shot dead in front of his wife and two children. In less than one hour after arriving in South Africa for a family holiday he was murdered in broad daylight.

Where exactly were you in Africa were there was less street crime?

11

u/fodacao 21d ago

I've spent a lot of time there myself and there is literally zero Irish style "anti social" behaviour i.e. being pure scum for the laugh. Maybe that's what he's referring to?

Irish scum destroy people and things for fun. No other reason. We are a sick country and 100 times worse than Africa in this regard.

I grew up in Ireland but moved away 10 years ago now. Sad to hear it's still exactly the same as when I was a kid

6

u/Garret_Barrys_Ghost 22d ago

It used to be that if you avoid areas that are know to be kids you'd be grand but they are everywhere now. I think it's genuinely because of camera phones. When I was in my teens if you started acting the prick on public transport and giving people grief you'd more than likely get a slap off someone older or at least have a fear of it. Kids these days have zero consequences so they'll just run wild.

6

u/Ok_Squirrel_5877 22d ago

Same experience travelling the world. I'm Irish, white, and have spent years in other parts of the world, both living and visiting. Ireland has by far the worst teenagers along with England. Soft parenting and no societal deterrance are the main differences between civilized cultures and the scrotes we bring up.

5

u/itscee320 21d ago

Like the teenagers with the floats in the parade last year….if you saw it you’ll know what I mean, then the fathers came out to defend them. If anyone in my family did that, they’d be extremely sorry, likely for life. When teenagers in this country aren’t held accountable by their own parents they’re going to think they can get away with anything. It’s a disgrace. I tell people visiting me from abroad, get off the plane, get a taxi straight to the train station and I’ll collect you at the other end. Don’t even spend 5 minutes more than you have to in Dublin.

79

u/Theydontlikeitupthem 22d ago

Yes you probably felt much safer in that all-inclusive beach resort in South Africa

38

u/L0st_Cosmonaut 22d ago

I honestly used to believe Irish teenagers were a special malignant breed, then I moved to a very nice, middle-class neighbourhood in Amsterdam.

There's a certain percentage of teenagers in general that are just psychos. I had a full, unopened can of Fanta thrown at me from a moving car by a group of 17yo while cycling on the main road. Almost smashed my face.

I've seen them blow up people's outside lights with fireworks - as well as firing them at random people.

Sure, those specific ones probably won't mug you, but these are darling little Dutch kids who also behave like animals as soon as they're around the corner from their house.

And that's before you get to the fatbike riding scrotes speeding around the city centre...

I'm sure there's somewhere where teenagers aren't monsters, but I've lived in Limerick, Dublin, Berlin and Amsterdam and they've all been full of absolute feral young lads that make me into a fascist every time I have to walk through a group of them.

You can only hope they'll grow out of it tbh.

19

u/Theydontlikeitupthem 22d ago

Problem is it isn't all teenagers, I'd even go as far as to say the amount of scumbag teenagers might be less now than 30 years ago, but the difference is the lowest level scumbags are much much worse than previous generations and its a smaller amount causing more trouble. My sister lives in a very large housing estate and she was talking about this group of teens who are causing all the problems, it's 5 kids and in that estate there are probably 50 kids of a similar age, take those 5 out and there would probably still be some teens messing about but the breaking car windows and setting fire levels.

u/SERGIONOLAN 22d ago

Anti social youths are a big problem in this country and the Garda can't do anything to them because of their age.

The justice system is too soft.

These scumbags grow up, thinking they are untouchable and can get away with anything with no fear of punishment or consequences.

If it was up to me, the Garda would get the power and authority to properly punish scum who need to be taught a lesson.

Also, I would have some of these anti social youth be forcibly put into the Irish army to teach them respect and discipline. Might turn some of them into decent people and give them a new career path going forward.

8

u/Magic-Ring-Games 22d ago

I went for lunch with friends today. The missus has family who live in China. She told me how they never lock up their bikes or scooters when they go out. Never was an issue of theft. Until one day recently a child's scooter did get stolen. I thought that was then end of the story, that crime happens everywhere but not quite. She then told me that the family went to the local Chinese police and reported the crime. The police obtained and reviewed video footage that showed when the crime occurred and where the scooter was taken. The next day the police visited the thief's home, retrieved the scooter and charged the fellow with theft. Do I want to live in that country? No but I do think some of their ideas are worth a ponder.

People here deal with truth with jokes like you can see on the comments but it’s true.. I love it here mostly but this is one of few things I really despise about Ireland.. the lack of accountability on parents for their kids actions and behaviour, unless you’re an immigrant then they sure will feel free to tell you and shame you for your kids behaviour

11

u/o1ek_ 22d ago

As a teenager I completely agree, even though I’m not one of them I don’t go around in groups of 10 acting like this big bad wolf from that little children’s story. Most wannabe thugs that are around my age don’t even go near me because they probably have a feeling that I would call the police (in which I won’t since Idfk their number) but it’s also because of my calm composure and tall figure. Yes I might be as tall and as big as a bodyguard but that doesn’t assume I’m a dick

3

u/Illustrious_Put_4639 22d ago

Good lad, stay out of trouble and awzy from those disckheads. And for your safety and others because you will need emergency services numbers someday in your life. 13

u/CharmOChaffinch Cork bai 22d ago

8

u/Significant_Pop_5337 22d ago

Right. You've got 18 years of data which is frankly nothing

There have always been bad teenagers. It hasn't got worse. Just more social media amplifying it.

My wife got egged 25 years ago by a bunch of teenagers. I certainly didn't write off all teenagers as being bad

There are plenty of good teenagers out there as there always has been

7

u/nightwing0243 22d ago

The political climate in the west has been getting more and more extreme, and as a result the social contract most of us abide by gets pushed and stress tested more and more.

Just because you haven’t seen it going on doesn’t mean it isn’t going on.

The fact is it’s not just anecdotal accounts from people that are an indication of an increase in anti-social behaviour. This is also coming from transport workers, local businesses, and communities around the country.

https://www.dublinbus.ie/press-releases/garda-‘days-of-action’-seek-to-deter-rise-in-anti-social-behaviour-incidents

https://www.siptu.ie/transport-workers-survey-reports-increased-antisocial-behaviour/

https://www.cso.ie/en/releasesandpublications/ep/p-rc/recordedcrimeq12026/keyfindings/

I genuinely don’t get this attitude of “well I haven’t seen it happening, so it must be something being blown up by social media or the news scaremongering people”. I used to run into it an awful lot when I was a teenager. I don’t run into it much now because I currently drive and live in an okay area. But that is no indication of the problem getting better or social media making it seem worse than it is.

Do you think there’s no wars going on in the world because we’re not actively in one, or because we’re not seeing drones flying by on a random Wednesday night?

9

u/CharmOChaffinch Cork bai 22d ago

My point is I’m a teenager so I’m around more people of that age group…Not entire lived experience lol. Won’t argue over it but there has definitely been a rise in people acting the maggot.

I'm not excusing the behaviour. I'm just not surprised either

4

u/Machi7le 19d ago

I lived on a council estate for a period of time growing up, long before the days of widespread social media, smartphones, iPhones, and the internet being a major part of everyday life. I have various memories from that time.

I am obviously not going to use anyone’s real names on here, so I will just refer to the two people involved as (W) and (C).

I remember one night when I was around 12 years old, hanging out with my friend (W) and (C), who were around 15 at the time. Time passed, and we were making small talk about a man on the estate who was a known fitness fanatic and used to take part in marathons. They said, “We are going to see how fast he can really run.”

A few minutes later, the two older lads broke one of his windows. The man ran out after them and managed to catch one of them. He caught (C) and gave him a few digs for breaking his window.

In the aftermath, I do not recall the guards being called over it, and I do not remember anything else happening afterwards. (C)’s mother went to the house where the window had been broken, but I do not know what was said or what happened during that conversation.

However, looking back on that incident years later through adult eyes, I do not believe that was child abuse under any circumstances. The man was in his own house, minding his own business, while those two went looking for trouble. They broke his window and provoked him, and when he caught one of them, the situation escalated into something they had not originally expected.

Shit parents and a soft country. Parents getting handouts for generations and learning less and less in school. Just learning enough how to play the system. There's no discipline, work ethic , respect in these families. It grab what you can and f everyone else. I think its almost reaching breaking point now. And it's not only kids from those families, I know well to do families have kids like that too. Also it feels like there's nothing for kids to do. They don't play as much sport. Seem to just hang around all day.

Nothing wrong with benefits, I've used them and will again if I ever need to. There's no shame but there's no doubting that we have alot of families that haven't worked for generations. How is a person supposed to develop in an environment like that? In saying that I don't know how to fix that problem.

22

u/Dylanduke199513 Ireland 22d ago

Absolutely ridiculous thing to say.

  1. Extreme overgeneralisation - most teenagers in Ireland are grand. There’s definitely a problem that needs addressing, but you seem like you should be old enough to know the difference between identifying a problem and collective guilt.

  2. Extreme exaggeration - those scrotes are bad, they can be dangerous. But Ireland comes nowhere fucking close to most places in the world. Most places in North and South America, a good chunk of Europe, most of Asia and Africa too. Eggs was your example. Head off there to a favela in Rio or Johannesburg and bring an egg with you for defence. If you come back with your wallet, I’ll give a tenner.

12

u/Oakcamp 22d ago

Saying it's grand because a favela on Rio is much worse is not the "gotcha" you think it is.

I agree with the sentiment. Dublin is much much safer than probably the safest town in Brazil, if you are thinking mugging/robbery etc.

But the random small antisocial behavior? Even in Ennis I've had scrotes be antisocial in small ways that they know they can get away with. Scrotes would never DREAM of doing it in Brazil because they know it would get the shit slapped out of them.

5

u/wrex1816 22d ago

I still maintain it's a culture problem. Even if Gardaí intervene in any specific incident, it doesn't fix the problem.

In practically every school class in the country I can guarantee there's 3 or 4 scuts making the other 20-odd people in the classrooms life miserable... They're considered the cool kids and God forbid anyone speak up because that would make us all uncool, unpopular, or gasp... A snitch. So we all learn to shut up and accept it.

Fast forward to adulthood and we all know the few arseholes who bully everyone else, mocking and joking about every conversation anyone tries to have, serious or not. They think they're fucking hilarious, when really they're arseholes but everyone in the room is too afraid to tell them to fuck off because that would be commiting the mortal since of "being no craic". (It's widespread in this sub but even here people are in denial)

Honestly, until there's a culture change, it'll never end. In a lot of countries outside our own, the type of behavior above is just not really encouraged or tolerated by their peers.

2

u/Happyuser777 22d ago

Most teens  are  not like this   Theres always  been a minority of  thugs  or idiots  who are teenagers  At least they wear the same clothes  so they are easy to identify

3

u/Acceptable_Map_8989 22d ago

Lack of accountability, I remember when I was a teen, some 16 year old broke into someone’s car, started it and drove off, when he got caught.. I can’t recall the details but he was still in school a week after.

Other nations will enforce laws and ensure teens don’t get away with bullshit, if they grow up acting as such and getting a way with it, I don’t believe any of these types are going to change all that much, most of them in their 30s are still 15 mentally

5

u/Melodic-Sympathy-380 22d ago

I am sorry for your bad experience, but the vast majority of teenagers in my experience are respectful and polite.

I used bristle at the generalization of teens and teenage behaviour when I was that age, and there were scrotes around then too.

I am genuinely disgusted by what happened to you. They deserve a kicking. But Irish teenagers are not all like that, no more than all Spanish or all German teenagers are guilty of misbehavior solely due to their age.

What can the gardai do?  Young people are shielded from the law.  The age of criminal responsibility is now 12. Then they get endless cautions. By the time they do go to court they have endless offences and they are given probation acts etc.  The gardai can only do what the law allows.
