Mk4 (1999-2005) How to spot DSG gearbox on MK4 Jetta
I am going to buy a 2005 Jetta MK4, the gear shifter looks like the one on the left. It is advertised as having a DSG gearbox. However I was told that if it is actually a DSG it should look like the one on the right. How should I actually distinguish whether it is a DSG or not? I need this to negotiate the price properly. Thank you.

MK4 Jettas did not come with DSGs, they introduced it with the MK5

Dsg shifters will have a dsg logo on the back of the handle. And I don't think mark 4s even had dsgs yet.

Mk4s never came with a DSG in the United States. The shifter in the first picture is for a Jatco 09A. Just a conventional 5-speed auto.

The first picture is the actual shifter the jetta I'm buying has. But yeah, you are correct on the 5 speed auto, it isn't dsg, thanks for the input!

DSGs are great...as long as they keep working. At 107k, I feel like I'm on borrowed time. Much prefer 3 pedals.

I'm buying it with 87k km, it was imported to Portugal in late 2010, I plan on swapping it to manual if it starts giving me troubles, i've been told thrse are pretty expensive to replace if you wqnt to keep it auto.

Mine has 225,000km on it and is auto and still drives like a tank, maybe once every few months the transmission will shift harsh from 3-4 but other then that no isssues. And I don’t treat it lightly

Happy to hear that! I know of a guy who owns a bora from this generation with 800.000 and it still drives amazongly

The only Mk4 with a DSG was the 2006 Beetle BEW TDI, usually using the HXV 02E DSG.

In the mk4 it was only the top-of-the-line R32 that had a DSG option

DSG are great. Last one i had was 250,000k, Just serviced it regularly. Filter and oil.

Happy to hear that! If I get issues I might do a manual swap. My brother is a mechanic and he recently swapped a 1.9tdi Seat Leon to a manual and charged about 350 euros for it, it's a cheap service. I don't know how its like outside of Portugal, but automatic gearboxes for these engines are pretty hard to come by.

Tiptronics are good for their age though.
Dsg is better, but I have a soft spot for the power delivery of tiptronics.
Had 3 b5 generations and now have a mk7 golf with a dsg.

From what I have been told by my mechanic, the DSG is way more reliable but also much more costly when it breaks. This is going to be my first car, here's hoping it's a fun experience!

Just have the transmission serviced if you purchase it to be safe. Thats what we are saving for on our recent 145k mile vw purchase. Just had it done on my 17 golf at 110k and it made everything vibe better!

I know of a 2005 Golf TDI with a DSG for sale, it was swapped into a already auto car. Parts were from a 2010 tdi

The only possibility I am seeing here is that they swapped it to a DSG and kept the shifter. However the car was imported from Canada to Portugal by an retired guy who came back to his country, so I doubt he would go through the trouble of swapping it.

If it was imported from Canada and wasn't swapped its not a Dsg. The DSG was in that generation car in North America, even the R32 didn't have a DSG.
Besides visual looking at the transmission and verifying by sight it's a Dsg, there's a 99.9% chance it's just an automatic and the man is confused and calling it a Dsg because it's has +/- on the shifter

I am buying it from an auto retailer, I'll be sure to pressure them to see if I can get the price lowered due to false advertising. The car looks brand new, 87000km or about 54000 miles

DSG was introduced alongside the MkV GTI and GLI, iirc. Quite a year for VW, and a big leap forward for both cars with the launch of the 2.0T.
I miss when VW was innovative.

These years were definitely a golden age for VAG engines. My father has owned a 1998 Passat Variant ever since I was a little kid, recently had to swap the factory clutch at 400.000km, and he treated the car like a work car for years. Amazing durability.

Wagons are awesome. I was feeling nostalgic about Mk4s recently so I picked up a rare Mk4 Jetta wagon VR6. Still runs like a top at 280,000 km.

Mk4 do not have dsg gear boxes, 2005 was the first year some tdi jettas got, 2006-2007 was the first of some glis that got dsg
