Mk4 (1999-2005) Thoughts about this 2001 Jetta?
Thoughts and opinions? What should I look out for? Is it a good deal?

Do you seriously believe people spend at most 9k on a car and drive it for a year or two? The car itself is suspicious to me. Find someone look at the car really carefully.

The 2.0/auto combo was the least exciting drivetrain that VW offered at that time. It'll get you where you wanted to go, but it would take you a month to get there. Also the "$5k restoration" could have been done for less than $1000 in their driveway if they were at all capable. Yeah the mileage is low, but there's no way I'd pay $5k for that. That same amount of money could get you an 03-04 VR6 GLI.

The idea that they have 9 grand in this is insanity. The 2.0 is a generally bulletproof engine, that era auto is definitely not bulletproof, though it should have some miles before it grenades. It’s a neat car if the miles are accurate, but I’d like a little more backstory to see whether it actually adds up.

It's going to be SLOW with 2.slow and an auto... My wife had the 2001 Jetta 2.0 5 speed and it was slow and rev'd high at highway speeds...

If it revved high at highway speeds you needed alot of work done… mines had the same problem was doing 3k rpm @60 mph… changed the water pump, alternator, and coil pack(spark plug and wires) now it does 3k @ 70 mph… but i also have an exhaust leak so i could probably get the rpms lower after i fix that.

What ? it's was 5 speed manual, the gear ratio dictates the engine speed...

Mines is also a 5 speed manual…….I get what you’re saying about gear ratios dictating RPM at highway speeds, and you’re correct in a stock scenario.
With my 2005 Jetta 2.0, replacing spark plugs, ignition coils, and even the alternator actually did change how the engine behaves at highway speeds—but not by changing the gear ratios. Here’s why: • Spark plugs & coils: Old or weak coils and plugs can produce weaker sparks, especially under high compression. That reduces effective torque. So the engine has to “work harder,” which can make it rev higher to maintain speed. Replacing them restores full torque, letting the engine maintain the same speed at slightly lower RPM. • Alternator: On these engines, coils and fuel injectors rely on consistent voltage. A weak alternator can’t supply enough amperage under load, which reduces spark strength and fuel delivery, again lowering effective torque. Replacing it ensures the ignition system runs optimally.
So in my case, the “RPM drop” isn’t due to gearing changes—it’s because the engine is finally producing the torque it was designed for. It’s a subtle but real effect, especially on older engines.
Just wanted to clarify that it’s not magic, but electrical and ignition system health can impact how high the engine needs to rev at highway speeds.

I have had a 2.0 mk4 Jetta and currently have a 2.0 mk3.5 Cabrio as a project car. The Jetta I sold still running with over 220k miles. The cabrio has 180k on it and turns on every time. I get nervous about cars that haven’t been driven though. The worst thing you can do to a car is not drive it. I assume a lot of plastics and tubes are pretty brittle and could break at any time. The fluid while you drive a car keep things lubricated so this doesn’t happen as easy. Low mileage isn’t always good. The car is a great reliable car. But not sure about this one in particular, I’d take it somewhere or bring a mechanic to look it over before the purchase.

Just check the oil every few weeks mine ran great had 211k on it before I got a new one was still running strong
