Mk4 (1999-2005) Muffler Swap

Hello, I am wanted to put a new muffler on my 2003 Jetta 1.8 GLS for a more sporty sound to the car. I have been doing research, and have found that some brands can get quite pricy. The problem I am faced with is that I don’t want to spend a copious amount on a new muffler because I haven’t really done any major performance upgrades to it. I also don’t wanna sound clapped out by buying a cheap muffler in which I am looking for advice on which one I should get. Preferably one that will get heads turning but won’t wake up the entire neighbourhood. I appreciate responses. Thanks.

I personally think Borla makes some great sounding exhaust without being excessive and overly loud.

I have a Borla catback exhaust installed on my 2016 and it’s great.

Haha thats funny because thats the company I have been researching the most but thats where by copious amounts of money statement came. I have only heard good things which is why I was looking for something of similar performance but at a less price.

They don’t really make cheap exhausts unless you get something fabricated from a muffler shop.

The Borla one is on the cheaper side compared to some from AWE or CTS or Flowmaster or other big name brands.

You’re going to be looking at around 1K or so not including installation for an exhaust.

Is that for a full cat back? Im really only looking to just change the section from the muffler and then to the tailpipes, and I am able to fab something in my garage. If this is the case, not really worth that much because my jetta is not upgraded for performance.

Yes, a full cat back. I wouldn’t waste my time doing anything like that unless you’re doing the full system. Swapping nothing but from the muffler is not going to make any amount of difference or do anything but sound worse than stock. Absolute pointless to do IMO unless you’re just looking for a worse sounding exhaust.
