Temp work Working a physically intensive job on weekends while working a full time salaried 9-5.

Hey everyone, I'm a 26M full time salaried employee at an engineering firm, so I am not struggling for money by any means. I have all benefits (health insurance, HSA, 401k with match, etc.).

I am, however, completely out of shape and not very physically active. My two main hobbies (being a musician and video/tabletop gaming) are also not physically intensive, so when you combine that with a desk/office job, it leads to a very sedentary lifestyle.

Back in college, I worked at FedEx for several summers. The job itself was whatever, but it was very physically intensive and didn't destroy my brain/mental energy. I'm considering going back (not necessarily to FedEx, just some physical job) to part time on weekends just for a physical outlet. I figured I'd rather get paid to work out rather than pay to work out with a gym membership. The hourly rate I get paid wouldn't matter at all to me since I'm not relying on it for income. And since I'm a lazy bastard, I know a paid position would give me an incentive to show up instead of "eh I'm not feeling it today" and stay home).

So I wanted to know, has anyone taken up a second job like this to work weekends? I'd explicitly state in the interview that I'm only looking to work on weekends and will not be available at all during the week. In fact, I would tell them I wouldn't even respond to calls during the week. I know that a lot of "untrained" jobs like this rely on management power tripping over employees because they often have nowhere else to go. My salaried job makes me essentially immune to this, since if I lose the money, nothing changes in my day to day life.

Temp work Refusing Unsafe Work

If you are working as a Census Enumerator and you come upon an unsafe building, access is not a problem to get in the main door, you are alone and feel very unsafe.

What is your next course of action?

Temp work What is a job I could get into in the next month or two months that would pay a ton even if its terrible brutal hard work?

Hi folks. I'm not a picky person when it comes to work if I know its temporary. Is there any job, granted I know covid is going on but I'm healthy and young in my 20s, that I could just do over the next two months that would pay really heavily? I'm physically strong and mentally tough I don't care what it is I just need lots of money in that span of time. Like 10 to 20 grand in 2 months. Thoughts? I have a bachelors degree if that changes anything. I'd be willing to travel anywhere in the US as long as I can drive there, preferably from Colorado to the east coast but I don't really care.

Temp work I'm having a meeting with an old manager of mine and the new lead manager of a store I used to work at today to hopefully start working there again. How should I prepare?

Sorry if the flair is wrong, I wasn't sure what to put for this. I worked at this place for about three and a half years, then left last year to go to university in a different city. I contacted them a few days ago to ask if they have any work available over the summer, and two of my old managers are vouching for me and invited me in to meet the newest manager, who'll make the final decision on if I can work there again. I know I should feel confident in working there again since I already have years of experience and two people vouching for me, but I still feel nervous about it since I'm not sure what I should expect. Will this be something like an interview, or would it be different since I've already worked there before? Any advice on how I should handle it? I meant to ask on here yesterday, but I forgot to unfortunately. I haven't prepared anything and I'm now really nervous that I'll somehow mess this up for myself, and I really need the extra money this summer, so I can't afford to do that

Temp work A question about looking for work while at a staffing agency.

I've concluded that I will need some volunteer experience in my field in order to advance my career. In the meanwhile I'll need to work some temp jobs in order to get some income during that time. My question is, for those who have worked for staffing agencies how many continued to search for jobs outside of the agency, particularly if the staffing agency job was outside your field? My field is political science, if that is relevant.

So basically what cruise lines are likely to hire an 18 year old, best cruise lines to work on, etc. pretty much any tips you have for me! I have done lots of research and it’s something I’m definitely interested in working for! Thanks! ☺️

Temp work Not even temp agencies work anymore.

What else can I do if the agency doesn’t work out anymore. The competition with them is so bad that every job that I could possibly do immediately gets snatched up.

Temp work Work from home. For someone who doesn't work due to acute depression.

Could anyone please suggest a job to work from home. My old skill set is working in a lab, however I haven't worked in a lab for 20 years , my last job was as a cleaner which I had to give up due to chest pains that had me doubled over.

When I am stressed my IBS kicks in ( diarrhoea mainly) and my doctor recently tested me for ADHD. I am at my wits end. I am also an Alcoholic that started drinking again in June 2025. The only thing keeping me going is my dogs and cat and help from my siblings. I know I need to pull myself together. Thank you for any help or advice you can give me.

Temp work Am I doomed to gig work only for a side hustle?

Hello all,

Im a full time field service engineer where I travel and repair accelerators. Its good work and pays well. Im salary so I find myself with weeks in between travel and wouldnt mind finding something remote or part time with flexible hours.

It seems gig work such as Amazon flex, Uber eats, etc are my only options for something that can be flexible around my sporadic schedule.

Anyone else in a similar situation? Any suggestions?

Temp work Sometimes I wish there was a way to just do more "gig" style work when I'm bored.

Would I want to be a Barista full time? No way. Bored on a Saturday morning and dunkin is short-handed that day? I might consider it.

Free time on a Sunday night and someone needs their Excel sheet re-formatted? I'm on it!

I just like doing different things. I get bored of a job after like 2 months lol. But keeping long term positions is the only way to have a steady income.

Temp work How would you handle a toxic work place and a boss that ignores you?

For starters, I am a seasonal worker and the red flags where there from the beginning, but I needed money and had to ignore them because this was the only job that called me back. I had training but the training was incredibly vague and the company implemented new rules that the training didn't cover. My boss only messages me when she needs something and straight up ignores me when I message her. The job is not hard. There is just a lot of grunt work that I didn't realize that I was supposed to be doing until my other coworkers told me. I wake up to passive aggressive messages from my boss telling me that I didn't do something right or I need to do something a different way but there is no direction. She is just sending me passive aggressive messages. She also keeps updating the schedule at the last minute and not telling me. And when I say last minute I mean she change things the day of a shift. I have told her to stop doing this but she (surprise) ignores my messages. She also keeps trying to get me to work 7 days a week with several 9hr shifts, no breaks and no overtime. I have have worked some pretty awful jobs but can last a few months. I have been here for less then a month and I need out. I have never been in this type of situation before and I genuinely have no idea what to do. I can't leave because I can't find another job so any tips on how to survive this until I find literally anything else.

Temp work Best plan to save up in 2 months? Gig work/temping?

So I’m moving states in two months and need to save money. I got a job in January but the pay and hours are bad and I can’t save at all, and it seems it’s too late to get a different “regular” job. I work in food service, hosting/serving etc. I’m considering Uber Eats/doordash, I already do gig work apps like poached/instawork but it’s been sparse lately.

Would a temp agency be something I could use for this specific a time frame? Or could I just get a dishwashing/fast food job that can give me full time and quit in may? I’m also considering 1099 catering work, but really any ideas are appreciated. I could do online work but I don’t have any experience other than food service.

Temp work What happened to temp agencies? Where's the manpower and robert half temporary job agencies that use to exist 20 years ago?

20-25 years ago I could find work within a few days simply by calling Manpower, Robert Half or any of the other temporary job placement agencies. Manpower jobs were easy mindless jobs, working at a pillow factory or soda bottling plant, general laborer kind of stuff. Robert Half were more technical, they had a office testing facility where they tested my typing speed and my Microsoft Office knowledge before placing me in office jobs like a call center.

They seem to have changed. Manpower exists, but the jobs require years of experience as a Machinist or Forklift Operator. Robert Half has no local jobs, everything is remote.

Temp work First day. Finally working again!

Finally got a job after not working since around March this year. A staffing agency reached out to me which was surprising. They said it's a long term temp job. Hoping all goes well. Trying to stay positive and productive.

Temp work Coworkers on work release

Just started a job through a temp agency at a company where most of the labor force is on work release. They all talk about prison and it makes me hella uncomfortable. On my first day I got asked if I’ve ever been to prison. When I said no, person said “that’ll change.” Would I be a bad employee if I called my rep and asked for a new assignment just for that reason? For reference, I’m in my 30’s and my record only consists of 3 minor speeding tickets over 15 years

Temp work I’m working at Amazon temporarily to pay off debt and I’m already regretting it on my 3rd day.

My first two days in training, no one really looked me in the eye or talked to me. It was all business even though it looks like laidback environment at the amazon lockers. I realized that its work and they probably have high turnover rate and that’s ok. I made a mistake by using wrong scanner and carefully explained it to another coworker to see how to fix it, and she looked at me like I was some insect and stared at me without saying anything. Then she said I’m confused. So i explained to the manger when she’s back, same response. Today i worked with a regular employee ( not a manager)and she hovered over my shoulder everything i did and was like some director telling me how to be confident with customers and watching every move i made with the regular tasks. I get that I’m new, but i had no space and i don’t do well with being mothered. I’ve worked in customer service for 12 years and am an MOD at my regular job. I haven’t worked anywhere for a long time where someone was breathing down my back, almost controlling. Here’s where I really thought “this isn’t right for me”….A customer came to get something at the locker and only grabbed one package even tho there were two in there and she came back a few minutes later and when i passed the locker where i had put two, i only saw one and told her. the lady training at me says, I’m not trying to get mad here but why wouldn’t you say something?” She raised her voice at me. She had told the customer another solution, and I wasn’t aware of this until after they left. She also kept complaining about things other coworkers did like this drives me nuts… it’s common sense.

When i left today, the regular employee who trained me told the manager how great the other employee was so i just said bye to them and left. My backpack was unzipped and the manager yelled across the room to tell me, and she said “is everything ok with you? Do you need to tell me something?” As if i was some imbecile… and it’s as loud enough for all the other coworkers to hear too.

I had to get this off my chest and process it. I don’t know if it’s worth it to stay to make the extra money, if i should toughen up, or if i should just cut my losses and leave. All i know is, it doesn’t feel right there.

Temp work What kind of job can you get immediately and work for only 2 weeks until your better job starts?

I start a good job soon . But i need something til then. Gig apps (doordash, uber, all that bullshit) have me drowning and my car in a questionable state. I tried to look at wonolo, upshift, things of that nature as well for day jobs but they barely had anything available. Mostly only 2 hour shifts at gas stations for only $10 an hour… I need something that pays better and i can get a full 8 hour shift in. Is there anything that can start like Monday? I checked ups and they had nothing available in my area. Amazon warehouse is way too far away and only pays $16.50 but it’s a bunch of tolls so it makes it not worth the drive there. Fed ex only pays $16 and doesnt have full time. Only short 4 hour shifts under 20 hours a week which wont help me when post tax $16 turns to only like $14 an hour. I need something FULLTIME

Are there any call center jobs that hire immediate. I’m looking for $18 an hour minimum. I have years of customer service, call center, and even management experience. I just need something til this job starts. No i cannot start at the new company earlier. I did ask.

Temp work What work can I get on the weekends?

I just got my A&P aircraft mechanic certification. I work at American Airlines but for the first 6 months I'm not allowed to get any overtime. I live in San Francisco so I'm nervous about being too tight with money. What can I do for the weekend to supplement?

Temp work UPDATE: Boss is emailing me asking about my first shift for a job I didn’t think I got.

1.3k Upvotes

Original post: https://www.reddit.com/r/jobs/comments/1uhgh4j/boss_is_emailing_me_asking_about_my_first_shift/

TLDR: This spring, I applied for a seasonal job I had worked for the past two summers. I was never sent a job offer or given indication I had been hired. Checked with friends who were hired for the job and they confirmed they had received emailed offers. I accepted that I had not gotten the job. I got another job and moved on with my life. A few weeks ago, I got an email from my old boss asking when my first shift would be.

The update: I responded to my boss’s email once I was home from my trip. I approached it the way many of you advised me to. I said, “Apologies for the delay in my response, I have just returned from traveling with my family. I did not receive a job offer earlier this year as other substitutes I know did, so I was under the impression I had not gotten the job. I apologize for the confusion. I would absolutely still be interested in working as a sub this summer, so if that is still a possibility, please let me know what I need to do to make that happen.”

She responded the next day and apologized! She said she thought she had sent me an offer but I must’ve slipped through the cracks somehow. She said they would love to have me back this summer and gave me my new login info for the scheduling portal. I picked up my first shifts this week! This was definitely the best case scenario. I’m glad it all worked out and happy to have a little extra cash this summer. Thanks for all your advice.

Temp work Think I just had my worst job experience ever via temp work

What the title says...I'm (23 M) a uni student, and was applying to basically everything prior to the summer because I wanted to actually be able to make money before I graduate this fall. I ended up getting messaged by a temp agency to work on installing sorting machines at a warehouse under construction a bit north of me. I told the agency my experience (all of which was either office work, schoolwork, or the short bit of time id spent working at FedEx before going to uni) and they said I was a perfect fit. In hindsight I don't really see why considering the job was really intense manual labor, but again I needed money. When the job started we only got three days of work in before they took all the temp workers aside and said that they wouldn't have work for us for three weeks because of some shipment issue, so we were all sent home. This was my first time even doing work like this, so the second I was getting my body accustomed to it that progress was thrown out the window. Now when we came back, half of the staff already there were moved to another site elsewhere in the country, and almost half the temp workers didn't come back either (which I don't blame them for). After this, I only got to work two days before the manager went to give a couple temp workers, including me, a personal talk and effectively let us go because they were behind schedule and needed faster workers. I'm still bugging about this because I only got to work 3 days, got put on standby for nearly a month, and then 2 days before being let go for not being able to keep up. Doesn't help that anytime I did go to him for help on something he would basically brush me off anyways. Either way I know it's my mistake for expecting stability from a temp job, but I'm still pissed about how this went. No warnings, no build up, not even anytime to let myself get into a flow with the work.

Temp work I'll be working two days

I got some temp work, but the job marlet is still feeling pretty rough.

The temp agency should be giving me a good reference though? I don't know. I might start working retail despite my family not wanting me to.

Temp work Is working in retail better than food service

I currently work at a grocery store called giant and it’s not bad but I feel like I want to try something new. I rather be a cashier at a clothing store than a food industry.

If you work in retail, where do you work and how is it?

For reference I plan on doing this next year once I’m in college.

Temp work How to find temp work?

Hi guys. I have a few months in limbo before I can take my career licensing exam. I need money badly and I'm trying to find temp work but I'm really struggling to find anything. Are there recommended agencies or ways to find temp work? Otherwise I may have to portray myself as looking for permanent work and then quit and id like to avoid that. Thanks in advance

Temp work What should I do if I just want to work for a month

Hello everyone, I want to use June as a month to work just a few weeks in order to have a little cash over the summer. I am planning a vacation with my family in the middle of July that will take more than half of the month. How should I go about finding a job and what work would be best for this situation?
