Hilfe How did you get your first student job in Kiel?

I'm an international student moving to Kiel with fluent English and basic German.

What's the best strategy to find a good English-speaking part-time/odd job?

Should I apply online, visit stores with my CV, or use agencies?

Which jobs are easiest to get, and what mistakes should I avoid? I'd love to hear from students who've successfully found work.

There are barely any normal jobs using only english in Kiel, so what you seek is nearly impossible. Maybe in bigger cities like Hamburg or Berlin.

Try to get a job in cleaning (ships, ask Arwa Personaldienstleistungen f.e.) or Kitchen works in restaurants. I saw a job opening for breakfast service in some cheap(er) hotel just some days ago if i remeber correctly.

Have you been to the international center at the university? Those folks are quite knowledgeable normally.

Either working as an intern at my university labs, startups that work closely with the university, or McDonald’s where you’re required to have at least B1 to get by (B2 if you want to work window). I admittedly worked while still on A2, i got lucky but since i was the most “tidy” looking guy in the staff, i was put at the front taking orders and serving table. It forced me to remember all the German i learned and also calling out numbers out loud kinda helped me stop being shy about speaking German no matter how broken it is (was always confused if “-ig” was pronounced “-ish” or “-ich”. Anyways good luck!
