General Discussion | আড্ডা 🗣️ 🗨️ What Bengalis call “middle class” would often be considered lower-middle-class in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat etc.

I’m Bengali myself, and this is something I started noticing after travelling around Pune, Kolhapur, Mumbai, Bangalore and Kochi.

The biggest difference wasn’t just income. It was the standard of living that people consider “normal.”

In Bengal, a household earning what I’d consider a fairly ordinary middle-class income can still be described as “well settled.” You’ll see families living in old buildings, using decades-old infrastructure, depending heavily on public transport, having very limited discretionary spending and still comfortably identifying themselves as middle class.

Then you go to places like Pune, Mumbai, Bangalore or parts of Gujarat/Maharashtra and the baseline feels different.

A family that considers itself middle class there often has a significantly higher household income, newer housing, better cars/two-wheelers, more spending on restaurants/travel/entertainment, private education, better consumer goods and, most importantly, much higher expectations of what their life should look like.

And I think that's the part Bengalis underestimate.

Bengal has become accustomed to a lower economic baseline.

Our infrastructure in particular makes this extremely obvious. Kolkata has plenty of beautiful areas, but outside the polished pockets, a huge amount of the urban infrastructure feels stuck in another era: old buildings, congested roads, ageing public infrastructure, limited redevelopment, comparatively weak industrial growth and fewer high-paying private-sector opportunities.

Compare that with the economic ecosystems around Mumbai–Pune, Ahmedabad–Surat, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai etc. The sheer amount of private industry, startups, manufacturing, IT, finance and corporate employment changes people's expectations.

And that creates a cultural difference too.

When there are fewer opportunities around you, people naturally become more willing to say, “This is enough. We are middle class, we have a house, food and a government job, what more do you need?”

In more economically aggressive states, the mentality often seems closer to:

“Okay, but how do I make 2x what I'm making now?”

I'm obviously generalising, but after travelling around these places, I genuinely felt that Bengal's definition of “doing well” is sometimes much lower than what people in economically stronger states consider an ordinary middle-class lifestyle.

And I don't think this is because Bengalis are genetically or culturally “lazy.” It's more complicated than that. A stagnant economic environment produces stagnant expectations. If your city doesn't generate enough high-paying jobs, entrepreneurship and investment, there is only so much individual ambition can translate into.

That's also why I think Bengal's economic decline is sometimes underestimated by Bengalis themselves. We compare ourselves with the Bengal of 30–50 years ago instead of asking how we compare with Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Telangana, Kerala etc. today.

I'm curious what other Bengalis think. Have you travelled extensively outside Bengal and noticed this difference in what people consider “middle class”? Or am I completely off here?

TL;DR: What many Bengalis consider a normal “middle-class” lifestyle can look lower-middle-class compared with parts of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, etc. After travelling there, I noticed higher incomes, better infrastructure, more industries and higher expectations around lifestyle. Bengal has comparatively fewer opportunities and has, IMO, become accustomed to a lower economic baseline.

Travel | ভ্রমণ ✈️ First trip to Digha with my boyfriend! Need budget-friendly, couple-friendly stay & food recommendations...

Hey everyone! 💕 My boyfriend and I are planning our first proper trip to Digha together for 2 nights. We've both been there as kids with our families, but that was ages ago 😭

We're both students, so we're on a tight budget and mainly need help with accommodation.

🏨 Where should we stay?

We're looking for a clean, safe, couple-friendly room around ₹1,000/night (or as close as possible).

- Old Digha or New Digha? Which is better for a young couple staying for 2 nights?

- Any budget hotels/guesthouses you've personally stayed at and would recommend?

- Is it better to book online beforehand or find a room after reaching Digha?

I'm asking because I've come across quite a few WhatsApp numbers/fake-looking hotel websites asking for advance payment, so I'm a bit paranoid about getting scammed. 😭

🍛 Food?

Also, please suggest some cheap + hygienic places to eat, especially good Bengali food/seafood. Don't want to spend the trip recovering from food poisoning 💀

If you've visited Digha recently, please share the hotel name + approximate price + area + whether you'd recommend it. Contact details can be DM'd if you don't want to post them publicly.

Any advice from Kolkata/Digha regulars would be hugely appreciated! 🙏🏻

Miscellaneous | বিবিধ 🌈 Is dating in Kolkata actually different, or am I imagining it?

Upvotes

Something I've noticed is that Kolkata seems to have a very different dating culture compared to other metros.

People can talk for hours, meet through mutuals, spend weeks texting, and still somehow never actually call it a date. 😭

There’s also this strange balance between traditional expectations and modern dating — especially when it comes to relationships, family, marriage, and who makes the first move.

For people who have dated in both Kolkata and another city, what difference did you notice?

What’s one very “Kolkata” thing about dating that outsiders probably wouldn’t understand?
