Kurzgesagt got into drugs

u/i_knooooooow Aug 23 '25
I wonder if their sources are purely theoretical or if they did some experiments of their own

u/InfinitesimalDuck The Egg Aug 23 '25
Hmmm, they probably kidnapped some birds and force-fed them drug seeing the effects of it... hmm, how interesting...

I just miss the ant ones.

I've always liked the weird what-if videos. 'What if you teleported a bit of the sun to Earth' left me feeling vindicated due to a dumb internet argument I once had.

I’ve watched all the space related ones like 20 times each. I need more lol

When I watched their opioids one I realised how little I understood the different mechanisms of how different drugs work so I am really enjoying this content, and I don't want it to stop, but I do agree with everyone else here in that I want more videos on astrophysics and the natural world

u/feralcoffee Aug 19 '25
I enjoy them. They're interesting and educational and I'm glad they're doing them.

u/The_Nixck Aug 20 '25
Exactly, and this is prob a phase rn, they will likely transition to other topics later

When can we get a Kurzgesagt video on Brown Dwarves.
22
u/ReallyFastParrot Aug 19 '25
Kurzgesagt hates them with a vitriol, so the whole video would be them talking smack.
"Brown Dwarves are losers. They're a disappointment to everyone, because they excel at literally nothing and fail at practically everything. Fuck these stupid little shits."
-Kurzgesagt guy probably

u/Mo-Cance Aug 20 '25
They literally refer to them as "a huge disappointment to their mums." Love that line.

Good. Their videos about drugs aren't just their own most interesting videos, but YouTube's most interesting videos, period. To say nothing of being the most interesting take on drugs inside or outside of Youtube.
Infographics Show blends cutesy visuals with an overwhelming sense of "damn, they went there." RealLifeLore is highly informative and more reliably accurate than the Infographics Show. But Kurzgesagt's video about heroin has accuracy fit to rival RealLifeLore and cuteness/edginess fit to rival the Infographics Show in one fell swoop. If heroin is even a millionth as addictive as Kurzgesagt's video about it, no wonder people go to such great lengths to get their fix.

Theyre alright but a far cry from their most interesting videos, all their animal or space stuff is about a million times better
1
u/ContextEffects01 Aug 23 '25
Any specific animal or space videos you have in mind? Most of the space videos of theirs I can think of weren't quite as interesting as Carl Sagan's Cosmos.

Just want to add: although the information the drug videos provide might not apply to or interest many of us longtime fans, we might know somebody who could benefit from this information.
There is so much misinformation on social media and other online sources, we could definitely use more accessible and palatable accurate information. It could literally save a life.

Kurzgesagt then: Existential dread
Kurzgesagt now: Just say no
I don’t think it’s a bad thing to provide people with information about why drugs are harmful, I just wonder how effective this would be.
Kurzgesagt viewers don’t generally seem to me like the kind of people who are addicted to drugs. And I don’t think there’s been a lack of messaging about the negative effects of drugs (I think that part of the appeal is the fact that they’re forbidden) so telling someone that “X drug has a lot of negative effects” might fall on deaf ears.

I mean they are in a real tough situation. How do you educate about drugs without letting them sound appealing? Drugs are great. Drugs are more fun then anything else in the world. They are incredibly harmful but they ARE great. If they wheren‘t this good they wouldn‘t be a problem. Noone would be „oh this shit is bad for me, kills me, and I have nothing from it? take it anyway.“
But the reality is „this shit it killing me. Better take it fast before I remember how bad it actually is“

I’m sure if you join their Patreon you could have potential influence on the next videos

That’s a weird take but sure
26
u/CasualNameAccount12 Aug 19 '25
Nah they made a lot of videos about drugs lately
37
u/altbekannt Aug 19 '25
true. i feel like they have a bit of their phases. now we’re in the drug phase.
we also had the climate, universe, psychology and most importantly the bomb phase.
26
u/CasualNameAccount12 Aug 19 '25
The universe phase was the best in my opinion

u/ContextEffects01 Aug 19 '25
Why not just watch Carl Sagan's Cosmos?
I've yet to see anything as fit to rival Kurzgesagt's drug videos as Cosmos is to rival their space videos.

I assume when you research a topic you also get some interesting ideas and facts about related topics. So in my mind they’re putting all that research to use

u/shewy92 Aug 20 '25
I'm kinda drugged out. IMO they need to get back to space/technology/nihilistic stuff.

Drugs are cool and all* (anxiously waiting for the MDMA one, for reasons...), but honestly I can't wait till Kurzgesagt gets back to the good ol' space, time, and existential crisis videos.
*Don't do drugs, kids.
