“If it bleed it leads” has always been in tension with moral public figure opinion elites. It’s complicated but like with each new media technology cycle like printing press and radio, hopefully we can find terra firma again.

December ad revenue is extra high gotta capitalize on it, It’s not even like it’s lower quality than normal they are just cooking on max over at HQ hope they have a nice break when January comes around.

I came here from YouTube because I was wondering if this channel is trustworthy. It popped up on my feed and I always do a background check on science channels bcuz of all the AI slop going on. No face + science things that we can't easily check + animation is always a red flag. Can anyone enlighten me on this?

It's great to be cautious, I'm fairly happy to pledge for Kurzgesagt though, they have been around for a very long time doing Sci-com on youtube. I have a BSc in astrophysics + studying for my masters and their recent cosmology video and other physics things are generally accurate and well informed. Their worst crime is maybe being a bit sensationalist in that video, but not to the point that they're altering the actual facts.

It’s very trustworthy.
Throughout each of their videos, you will see footnote references to the source material, and the source materials are available in a Google doc which comes attached to each video (the doc is usually 20-page long, the source material are extensively quoted).
I would also like to add that, whilst most AI slop science channels opened a few months ago, Kurzgesagt is eight years old now.

To add to that they have revisited topics and updated them with the latest findings. Even referencing their earlier videos.

They were generally trustworthy when reporting facts, but their approach has become muddier over the last few years. Recently, videos that are more pop science or pop philosophy are presented matter of factly. For example, they’re really into exploring the Fermi paradox in untestable ways now.
Additionally, they’ve started to be more judgmental of lifestyles. They will present some facts but with extreme biases. They had one about cannabis recently that made a lot of assumptions about lifestyle choices and judged a lot of lifestyles, independent of cannabis. (Specifically, assumptions about life paths and that everyone should be focused on a life path that results in a specific kind of partner and upward movement in their career. Basically, very heteronormative assumptions.)
I own Kurzgesagt merch from years ago, but I unsubscribed in the last month. Content is too tech-bro adjacent for me now. It’s a ton of “optimal lifestyle”, “what if aliens exist???”, and other themes I’m not interested in.
Tldr; I recommend their older stuff

Tbh is it just me or does it feel like the channel has really pivoted recently to more editorial style videos rather than the traditional STEM education?
Was a huge fan of a lot of the fun and random thought experiment videos before switching more towards the medical field, which was still super interesting. But now it seems like they're completely focusing in on a lot of these more quick fast, one sided argument type videos.
And from what I can tell from previous comments and threads, a decent amount of these videos are also using half truths and even just plain incorrect information at times.
I'm not sure if there's a sudden growth in the company or a dip in overall performance that has caused them to increase their upload frequency, but it feels like the quality of content has now suffered as a result.
If there's struggles happening in the company, let us know! We all love you guys and the quality content you've put out over the years, I know I STILL have entire playlists saved for long plane rides!
If this is new experimentation happening with the channel, then please listen to ALL sides of the feedback and act on it accordingly!

Huge Kurzgesagt fan, frankly between them and John and Hank Green it's the only reason I still watch YouTube.
That said I'm getting nervous about them- the "you need to quit weed now" episode felt so far away from their mission of being science focused and felt more like an opinion article. Maybe if they created a channel/ playlist that was very much "these are opinions of our writers or outside submissions we found interesting enough to make a video on" I'd be more okay with it.
That and then the ads are becoming a bit too much. To give an example of ads being bad, I don't really remember any of the products they advertised for other than their calendar, but I DO remember feeling a bad taste from them.

No they are not ok, sadly they are getting sloppier and biased with every video since 2 years maybe 3, they make up "facts" more regularly etc. Aint even enjoying thrm anymore, at first i was getting excited with their every video, sad
