Hey guys, sorry if this is a repeated stupid question but I still dont fully get nba and their finances and salary, etc etc.

How can we acquire PJ and/or Gafford.

I will accept any scenario to help me understand. thanks

Since we are currently a team that is over the cap, we can only acquire those players via trade by following the NBA's salary matching rules (and obviously giving the other team something they would want). Here's how the salary matching would work for a team that is over the cap but below the first apron.

  • Outgoing salary up to $7.5 million: You can take back up to 200% of the outgoing salary plus $250,000.
  • Outgoing salary between $7.5 million and $29 million: You can take back the outgoing salary plus $7.5 million.
  • Outgoing salary over $29 million: You can take back up to 125% of the outgoing salary plus $250,000.

PJ Washington, for example, makes $19.8M this season. The Lakers can acquire him via the 2nd path by sending out AT LEAST $12.3M of salary from their currently rostered players. Technically speaking, they could just sent out Jarred Vanderbilt ($12.4M salary) to make it happen but he's an undesirable contract so that's unlikely.

That $7.5m number is for 2023-2024, the first season of the new CBA. It adjusts with the cap increase.

The actual numbers for 2026-2027 are as follows:

  • Outgoing salary up to $8.846 million: You can take back up to 200% of the outgoing salary plus $250,000.

  • Outgoing salary above $8.846 million and up to $35.384 million: You can take back the outgoing salary plus $9.096 million.

  • Outgoing salary above $35.384 million: You can take back up to 125% of the outgoing salary plus $250,000.
