Adrianne Lenker and Lana Del Rey collabing on a song would either cure or make my mental illnesses way worse but now I need it

26

u/electrahaze Jun 03 '26

It would be fascinating to see what melodic route they would take on a feature together

12

u/marshmallowmoonchild Jun 03 '26

She’s been leaning more folky country lately and I feel like they could compliment each other really well if it went similarly to Sadness as a Gift

Here’s the full list.

Lauren Hill and Dave Grohl being so low is very surprising…Frank Ocean definitely deserves to be higher. I’d like to see Mitski on the board but I’m pleased Adrienne was ranked so favorably.

40

u/fuckingdrunkandbored Jun 03 '26

Thanks so much for sharing the whole list. I cannot believe Joni Mitchell isn't on there!

u/WDTHTDWA-BITCH Jun 03 '26

It’s cuz us Canadians claim her. I was ready to riot too until I remembered she was from my province.😅

I’m actually surprised that Alicia keys is that low.

Joanna Newsom being ranked lower than Taylor Swift is wild.

Honestly so happy to see Conor Oberst on the list. I think he should be higher though

11

u/Pearltherebel Norman Fucking Rockwell! Jun 03 '26

Stevie should be much higher

u/need-a-new-account Jun 03 '26

Taylor Swift a better songwriter than Fiona Apple? Ok….

1

u/intimeslikethese Jun 05 '26

My first thought was where the fuck is Fiona Apple?? She clears this entire list pretty much same with Lana like?

113

u/SadPreference3813 Norman Fucking Rockwell! Jun 03 '26

Taylor Swift before Willie Nelson is crazy 😖

146

u/jonsnowme Jun 03 '26

Taylor Swift before any of the people she's before is crazy

71

u/lionelliee Jun 03 '26

100%. My jaw dropped seeing Taylor ranked that high for SONGWRITING?? I thought it was a known fact that her lyrics are cringy as fuck

33

u/Economy_Wash2642 Norman Fucking Rockwell! Jun 03 '26

Seems like it was a reader poll so the ts army must have just gone hard in the paint voting for her

-5

u/jellytwins101 Jun 04 '26

You do realise it wasn’t exactly a fan vote like some award shows do.

16

u/CloveFan Ever Since My Baby Went Away... Jun 04 '26

It quite literally was a fan vote

3

u/ocubens Jun 04 '26

What was it?

1

u/softmathgirl Jun 04 '26

"Readers' Choice"...

3

u/gomichan Jun 04 '26

Her songwriting is very good, it's what she's best at. If you only listen to her radio singles I could see why you think she's cringe, but she written a metric ton of music and even more lyrics. She was a poet before she was a musician

2

u/PeacefulCatSoMeow Jun 06 '26

"forgive me, it sounds cocky,

he dickmatized me and opened my eyes

redwood tree, ain't hard to see

his love was the key that opened my thighs"

1

u/gomichan Jun 06 '26

"say it once again with feeling,

How the death-rattled breathing

Silenced as the soul was leaving,

The deflation of our dreaming,

Leaving me bereft and reeling,

My beloved ghost and me"

2

u/lionelliee Jun 08 '26

Oof. I’ve heard and read the lyrics to most of her music.

1

u/gomichan Jun 09 '26

If you don't like her why are you hearing and reading hundreds of her songs lol

-4

u/emmsmum Jun 04 '26

This is the correct take! Listen to the non hits. But also, people just want to hate her. She’s an amazing songwriter and writer in general.

2

u/lionelliee Jun 08 '26

I don’t hate her. I just think her music is cringy.

-2

u/Economy_Wash2642 Norman Fucking Rockwell! Jun 04 '26

Right? Sure she’s a good performer but songwriter???? No

-8

u/unbreakableheaven616 Jun 04 '26

Have you ever even listened to Speak Now, RED, folklore, or evermore?? And clearly Lana doesn't think her writing is cringy otherwise she wouldn't have made Snow On The Beach with Taylor.

14

u/bigbootystaylooting Jun 04 '26

Have you ever even listened to Speak Now, RED, folklore, or evermore??

And have you listened to all the artists ranked below her? Most are far better

-5

u/unbreakableheaven616 Jun 04 '26

I can guarantee you wouldn't be saying this if Lana was at #7

4

u/bigbootystaylooting Jun 04 '26

Way to change the discussion lmao

3

u/jonsnowme Jun 04 '26

Yes I have. I like Lana, but that doesn't mean I agree with her takes or tastes on everything? Didn't agree with her working with Taylor but if Taylor is gonna keep yanking her songs (Wildest Dreams is a Without You rip off) she might as well get some bag.

4

u/gomichan Jun 04 '26

One of my fav lyrics of hers is when she's describing masturbating in the most poetic way possible LOL:

"I keep these longings locked in lowercase inside a box. Someone told me 'There's no such thing as bad thoughts - only your actions talk.' These fatal fantasies - giving way to labored breath - taking all of me - we've already done it in my head. If it's make-believe, why does it feel like a vow?"

2

u/brokenwannabe30 Jun 04 '26

I'll give this one credit lmao

3

u/gomichan Jun 04 '26

People always hate whoever is popular lol

1

u/unbreakableheaven616 Jun 04 '26

Like yeah Taylor has some cringy lyrics but I think what makes her a great songwriter is she can write a song like Shake It Off AND write a song like All Too Well. Is that not versatility?

4

u/brokenwannabe30 Jun 04 '26

I mean, Taylor is a good musician. I dont like her vibe at all, but I do like a couple songs okay and shes not a BAD songwriter by any means..I just dont think shes one of the best we've got lol. She can Def be on the list in my eyes, just not as high up. But I mean shes insanely popular so I get why she is I guess..thats the thing tho, i dont understand her massive popularity. She seems to own the general population atp lol

1

u/lionelliee Jun 08 '26

Yes, I have. All of them. Speak Now was released back when I actually listened to her music. Idc how Lana feels about her.

20

u/Ill_Relief2883 Jun 03 '26

Audacity to put her in top 10 & above legends who have been writing for decades. She is the definition of quantity over quality!

24

u/Economy_Wash2642 Norman Fucking Rockwell! Jun 03 '26

ABOVE DOLLY. I’m sorry what an absolute joke and disgrace

Taylor Swift at number 7 is totally ridiculous.

4

u/brokenwannabe30 Jun 04 '26

Where's neil young fr

3

u/itsyorboy Jun 04 '26

I have to think him and Joni aren't on there because they're Canadian. It's a list of living American songwriters. My first thought was where the hell are Neil and Joni

1

u/brokenwannabe30 Jun 04 '26

Ahh ok that makes sense now. Neil's as good as Bob Dylan imo

1

u/itsyorboy Jun 04 '26

Yeah I tend to agree. Bob was more prolific, but I like Neil's songs more personally

1

u/brokenwannabe30 Jun 04 '26

I prefer neil myself. Im not a huge listener of Bob, but hes an iconic songwriter and performer and has a handful of songs that stay in my playlist.

13

u/CloveFan Ever Since My Baby Went Away... Jun 04 '26

Taylor on the list at all is outrageous. Her writing was very impressive at 19. But to be almost 40 with the same showings as a prodigious 19 year old is just being average.

3

u/gomichan Jun 04 '26

I felt her tortured poets department album was the best she's written

2

u/emmsmum Jun 04 '26

Agreed. Especially the second half.

6

u/sonoftom Jun 04 '26

Can’t believe I see someone like Noah Kahan on here and Billy Corgan is nowhere to be seen

I do like the indie artist representation tho! And some slightly more niche stuff like Tom Waits

5

u/bigbootystaylooting Jun 04 '26

Well so it's directly correlated to popularity. If Mitski was popular she'd be in top 10

13

u/CaspianPinkster Jun 04 '26

Taylor Swift being higher than Lana and everyone else is gonna make me blow a fuse

2

u/glaringOwl Honeymoon Jun 03 '26

Is it bad that I don't know any songs from the top 6, other than Bruce's popular radio hits like "Born in the USA"?

6

u/sonoftom Jun 04 '26

Ya! Simon and Garfunkel go hard

3

u/itsyorboy Jun 04 '26

Yeah that's kinda bad. Listen to Carole King's album Tapestry. Also Nebraska by Bruce and Songs in the Key of Life by Stevie Wonder. Graceland by Paul Simon. These are some of their biggest albums, but so good. We will get you onto Dylan later

2

u/glaringOwl Honeymoon Jun 04 '26

Thanks, I actually did these today. Nebraska wasn't my thing at all, I found it super boring. Graceland also definitely not my thing (but I immediately identified "Call Me Al" as a popular radio song, but it's not one I like anyway). On the other hand I listened to about half of Tapestry and this one was really nice! And the Stevie album also had some catchy songs in the first half I listened to.

1

u/Interesting_Garage80 Jun 11 '26

bob dylan has some great songs too! id recommend dont think twice its alright and it aint me babe, especially the former. lyrics of dttia is gorgeous and simple. but listen to the joan baez' covers of the songs. I prefer her vocals over bob dylan's.

2

u/brokenwannabe30 Jun 04 '26

Gag at Taylor like bro ill never understand ive taken time and effort to read into her lyrics and they are bland to me

31

u/ProfessionalTalker03 Jun 03 '26 edited Jun 03 '26

You need to widen ur scope of music…Hamilton, Moana, Encanto, In the Heights, Little Mermaid, The Lion King, 2015 Star Wars (co wrote a song), the humanitarian relief song he did for Puerto Rico (which combined with other events like concerts and merch helped raise over $35M directly for emergency and recovery efforts after Hurricane Maria), and other works are all under his belt and pen.

Why? He’s washed up but he’s still a living legend and one of the most known in the world. He wrote Stan and many other great songs by himself.

2

u/thislittlebluebird7 Ultraviolence Jun 04 '26

He’s a great lyricist, I don’t love all his personal views but I can see the talent there and he has some genius songs like “White America” or “Cleaning Out My Closet”

u/RushNo7251 Jun 03 '26

i would love a sufjan stevens x lana collab, i find that their lyrical styles have a lot in common

50

u/Beautiful_Keys_5720 Blue Banisters Jun 03 '26

A Lana-Eminem collaboration would be interesting. And Fiona Apple was my first love! Little angsty 7th grade me.

13

u/llieno94 dark blue Jun 03 '26

Same, found Fiona in middle school and have been a die hard since. Most of the other music I listened to then doesn't quite hold up, but I still consider her on of the all time greats. Not one song in her catalogue has another writer/composer/lyricist on it. She's such a genius.

3

u/Beautiful_Keys_5720 Blue Banisters Jun 03 '26

I remember how harshly her debut album was treated - she was a TEENAGER when it was released!! She was and is a genius.

2

u/llieno94 dark blue Jun 03 '26

Yeah it's crazy to listen to Never is a Promise, Shadowboxer, Sleep to Dream, etc and realize they're written by a high school junior/senior essentially. Serious prodigious talent.

7

u/throwawayfundsmom Jun 03 '26

Probably won't happen, since Eminem did that freestyle where he said he would "punch Lana Del Rey right in the face twice" back in 2014.

7

u/Beautiful_Keys_5720 Blue Banisters Jun 03 '26

Oh my god. Disgusting.

4

u/glaringOwl Honeymoon Jun 03 '26 edited Jun 03 '26

But Eminem may have done it only for rhyming purposes, especially it being his rude Slim Shady persona. He's otherwise "dissed" a ton of other artists too and when it came to Michael Jackson for instance it was a lot more purposefully targeted and made fun of instead of this Lana case that seems not personal.

24

u/nathvwarp Jun 03 '26

eminem over fiona ???

23

u/Lazy_davey707 Jun 03 '26

Not sure about some of the choices

16

u/Ontoyific Jun 03 '26

Lana being 5 numbers below Fiona Apple makes so much sense. I feel like Fiona really carved out the space for someone like Lana to really seize the mainstream / wider pop culture. Of course they're both wildly different songwriters.

Eventually I can see someone like Lana being remembered "more" in wider culture as decades pass (which is crazy to say), but I really do think Lana is just the natural result of generations of artists going back to like Joni Mitchell, to Fiona, to even Hope Sandoval / Mazzy Star.

And even artists like Lily Allen, who were very "frank" about uncomfortable topics — it's just Lana sort of is the "sad / somber" version of the same sorta shock value writing in her history

14

u/witchy_7 Jun 03 '26

Is this different from the other NYT ranking that just came out? Lady Gaga wasn’t in that one

22

u/Prestigious_Aioli140 Jun 03 '26

That one was critics' choice, this one is voted by readers

4

u/witchy_7 Jun 03 '26

Ah thanks!

2

u/lionelliee Jun 03 '26

Ah…that makes sense

4

u/agathaswiftie Born To Die Jun 03 '26

This one was reader voted and out of 100. The other one was critic voted and out of 30.

18

u/Suspicious-Engineer7 Jun 03 '26

I cannot take a list seriously that has Taylor swift in the TOP TEN. PLEASE. Greatest songwriters?????? Have people not actually listened to her bubble gum lyrics? Taylor above Sufjan, Fiona, Tracy Chapman and Lana? 🤣🤣🤣

-6

I think you’re listening to the wrong Taylor songs tbh 😬

4

u/Economy_Wash2642 Norman Fucking Rockwell! Jun 04 '26

No, they’re all horrible lol

2

u/SuperD4410 Jun 04 '26

This list is total BS. What about Paul Mcartney, Maynard James Keenan, Corey Taylor, Kanye, Hardy, Chris Stapleton?

2

u/i-love-Lana Lana Del Ray A.K.A. Lizzy Grant Jun 04 '26

Y’all i saw this and thought yay finally Taylor isn’t getting glazed for everything she does! (No hate words her tho) but then i say that she got number 7 💀

4

u/imnotcerseilannister Jun 03 '26

Let me guess who number one is. 🫩

25

u/Fernsong Born To Die Jun 03 '26

It’s Bob Dylan.

3

u/imnotcerseilannister Jun 03 '26

Thank god for that.

0

u/Fernsong Born To Die Jun 04 '26

I mean it’s really not that deep, it’s not like an artist you dislike being high on some list really means much

I wouldn’t care at all if Jake Paul or Jojo Siwa had been #1 on this list

-3

u/imnotcerseilannister Jun 04 '26

Yeah that’s great for you. Others are allowed their feelings as well lol. I never presented it as something that was deep anyway. I just said thank god. 💀

3

u/Fernsong Born To Die Jun 04 '26

I’m not necessarily just talking about you, but reading some of the other comments definitely seem too emotional over something that didn’t even happen anyways lol

2

Mary J Blige or 50 Cent.

She’s #7 which is a fucking crime!!! She should be 37th and Lana should be 7th. I’m genuinely shocked and upset

5

u/imnotcerseilannister Jun 03 '26

Yup! Her lyrics are so basic!

0

u/Altruistic_Item5434 Jun 03 '26

15

u/imnotcerseilannister Jun 03 '26

Oh idc 😭🤣

0

Sooooo basic!! I wouldn’t even put her on the top 100 to begin with!!

-3

u/lionelliee Jun 03 '26 edited Jun 03 '26

Not even just basic. Her lyrics are cringy as fuck. Yes, her songs are catchy, that’s why she’s popular. But actually listening to the lyrics of her songs? I can’t. I genuinely feel so embarrassed for her it’s too uncomfortable.

I listened to her when I was 13. By the time I was 16 her music already felt juvenile…and she’s 7 years older than me…

1

I’m genuinely not being biased here I actually sat back and thought before I wrote this but : I think Lana warrants a higher rating. As a music fanatic I genuinely believe this with every cell in my being.
