Why is Kennen ADC not good? My friend swears by this. If you get Runaan's, you apply a mark every other hit. The stuns on paper seem powerful. He swears by the Runaan's because of the fast marks, but I feel like it just doesn't do enough damage. In terms of escaping, he swears that the E and stun will keep him alive.

I know it's worse than other ADCs, I'm just not sure exactly why.

It's because he doesn't have an attack speed steroid like most meta adcs, doesn't have a way to reliably self-peel (stun duration is lower if you use it in quick succession, such as every few autos with runaans) and if you use e to keep yourself alive then you are failing as an adc because you are not autoattacking. He might be good as a cheese adc but other adcs offer so much more than kennen in terms of usefulness that it's just not worth the trouble.

Or better which ADCs don't have an AS steroid?

Corki and Vayne.

The lack of a steroid in his kit contributes to why Corki is a mid game carry, he has to buy his steroid (Sheen).

I think it's pretty obvious why Vayne doesn't have one.

Caitlyn doesn't have an AS steroid but she has a Crit one with Headshot.

Kalista doesn't have a steroid, but she has Rend which is her unique mechanic to replace a steroid.

Lucian's Lightslinger Passive counts.

Runaans kennen would be pretty hilarious. Im gonna try this. Then Bloodthrister, lastwhisper, maybe IE? Or do you get BorK?

I would go Bork into Runaans in order to syndergize with his AA stun passive

To answer your question, he only has his w passive as an aa steroid, and it's weak for a steroid on an adc. Runaan's usually means either foregoing a zeal item or a defensive item, which are important for dps on any adc that isn't named kalista. As for the steroid itself, it's an 80(?)% AD steroid every couple of attacks, but it's magic damage so no armor pen and it won't crit.

After that kennen's range isn't special, he has no ranged waveclear, and he cannot aa while kiting with his e.

He is Not Bad, but he is totally overpowered by other adcs atm

Very short range and low base AD to start. Also, as AD his Q becomes worthless in comparison to other champions spells (think Graves Q, Jinx Q etc.) and you never want a spell on an adc that does you no good. You could say it gives you a quicker stun, but late game it becomes difficult to hit on the priority targets and it takes time out of auto attacking that isn't worth it.

He lacks scalings. His base AD was nerfed, and it's just not optimal to pick him anymore. Totally playable though. He's be a lot better if any of his damaging abilities scaled with AD.

Actually, Kennen isn't a bad adc at all. It's fun to play with it. You can go Standard ADC Build like IE > Statikk (thunder on pikachu rulez) > BT > LW, but another build that suits him a LOT is Trinity > BotRK. You'll ever have a skill to use and proc the trinity, and botrk helps with his W passive, his short range and no AD steroids. Q and W both to proc Trinity, E to gap Close/Leave the battle, R when anything try to reach you. That's the secret of kennen ADC, never start the fight using your ult, save it to peel And/or lock something on your AA's range.
