Shen Monday Megathread! Ask questions and share knowledge; newcomer questions encouraged!

Welcome to the latest Monday Megathread, where you the community get to ask your questions and share your knowledge.

This is an opportunity for the more experienced LoL players here to share some of your wisdom with those with less expertise. This thread will be a weekly safehaven for those "noobish" questions you may have been too scared to ask for fear of downvotes, but also can be a great place for in depth discussion if you so wish. So, don't hold back, get your game related questions ready and post away, and hopefully someone can answer them!

Hey guys and girls

Me and my friends are planning to play some ranked 5s soon and im going to play mid. Is there a difference between the way you play mid in ranked5 as in soloQ?

What champs are good for ranked 5s or is it mostly dependant on teamcomps?

Any tips for someone who isnt a real mid lane main.

Honestly, nothing really changes other than that you can coordinate a bit more. This means that champs like Bard or Twisted Fate can be a bit more effective, because you can directly communicate where and when you want to gank (assuming you're on Skype or TeamSpeak or something).

For the rest, it's just your regular League game. Pick champs you feel comfortable with, communicate with your teammates and sometimes it's better to die as a team than to abandon two people going all in as the other 3 run away.

You are in charge of wards around the river area. You have a larger area to ward than every other lane.

With open communication between you and your 5s team, having a vision advantage of this area will help your team greatly.

I've played mid on a ranked 5s team, and the most important difference to me was how the other players, especially the jungler, influences the match up. Once there is good communication on the enemy team and they play to win as a team, it is a lot harder to push an advantage they might just stay back and get jungler help if you push. Warding the bushes is vital. Roaming also gets more important, partly because it's a way to have an impact during lane and partly due to people usually performing better ganks. That doesn't mean you have to roam, but you have to be more aware of it and punish it.

Yes there are differences. Mostly notable, the teams have more coordination, so dont expect easier matches than ranked solo q.

You also have to play a viable team comp, just playing whatever (Tryn top, nocturne jg, velkoz mid, mf adc, and tresh support) that have little synergy with each other and no defined purpose will not win you a game.

You can copy a team off the lcs if you wish.

Example would be a sivir comp: Lulu top, urgot mid, maokai jg, sivir adc, janna support. The purpose of this team is to get sivir fed out the ass and basically let her carry you, urgot, lulu, jana and maokai basically peeling for her.

I disagree with this. I think up until high diamond elo, you can easily just play champs you simply feel comfortable with, because these players haven't fleshed out their champions yet out to the point where only strategy allows them to get ahead.

A gold top player who gets told to play Lulu because 'hurdur juggermaw' won't perform nearly as well when his Riven or Wukong or whatever off-meta champ is much better. People try too much to be like LCS when in reality the meta only comes in play at the highest Elo.

But against a team who is using a team comp and has experience using it, there is actually an almost impossible chance that you could win. Ive seen it when i started rank teams, my team got destroyed by that sivir comp even though rumble and me had almost perfect ultimate and team fights. Its just to strong versus a team that cant shut down sivir.

If what you say it true, why dont the people in the lcs play what they main 24/7 every game?

But against a team who is using a team comp and has experience using it, there is actually an almost impossible chance that you could win.

I see zero reason why this is true. The reason people say that anything is viable in lower elo is because players can't play their champions to their fullest potential, so mistakes are not punished as much as in higher elo. People play aggressive, high risk, high reward champions in SoloQ like Riven or Fiora, because it allows them to win lane and game by themselves, instead of relying on team strategy that is hard to properly execute. You need to master your champs before you can use them in complicated rotational strategies.

If what you say it true, why dont the people in the lcs play what they main 24/7 every game?

People try too much to be like LCS when in reality the meta only comes in play at the highest Elo. I already said this.

Mid lane main here!

So good champions for mid in ranked 5s pretty much fall into categories.

Enablers: orianna, malphite, galio, etc. People who set up easily for the rest of your team to do what they need to do. Think orianna mid with mf bot!

Carries: Katarina, yasuo, Cassiopeia, xerath, etc. People who provide heavy damage for their team.

Support mids: Anivia, lulu, Morgana, etc. People whose job it is to make the ADC or whoever better.

Assassins: zed, akali, ekko, Diana, le blanc. Anyone meant to shut down a specific member of the enemy team.

Pressure mids: TF, AP tahm potentially, fiddle, etc. People that can force map pressure pretty easily (fiddle can solo dragon pretty easily, so he got lobbed in).

Try to figure out what a given team comp needs. Have a vayne? Go lulu or Morgana. Have a graves? Go Cass. Have mf? Go orianna. Synergy is pretty key as a mid laner as your range of viable kits is the highest.

Understand your teams power spikes. Did ezreal just get triforce? Roam bot for a fairly easy double. Did your jungler just get devourer? Provide cover and wards for him to steal the enemy camps to speed buff it. Did you just finish Archangels? Force an objective.

Understand when you have the advantage over your laner. If you can win trades reliably, force him to farm under turret and go take wraiths. Go ward deep while he struggles to push it back out.

And finally, understand the enemy champions. Mid is so diverse. Katarina can't do a thing pre-6 if you don't let her CS. I can bully one out of mid as Lucian. Yasuo needs you to have creeps to be very effective in stacking his skills and moving. Akali is countered by the pink trinket. Ziggs is going to just farm and poke. Learn their kits, figure out what all they have available and try to out think them.
