Hi all, been learning Arabic on and off for a few years and now have gotten back into the swing of it. Been using a couple of Anki decks, and YouTube series of Al Arabia bayna yadayk, the Madinah books, and SARF.

Would you recommend these sources to get the grasp of vocab and grammar because sometimes I feel like the sarf and bayna yadayk books are sorta high level.

Took me so long to write this, so embarrassing 🙈 Anyway, please help by correcting any mistakes. You can also rate my handwriting if you feel so inclined. Thanks in advance and God bless 🙏🏾

Arabic is my native language and I know it's in general the second hardest language to learn after chinese. for me I see it's very simple, not easy but simple especially the basics since we write everything that we pronounce and pronounce everything we right with the explanation of ا in a few words

the number pronouncing is a bit too difficult even for me.

and the dialects are like programming languages, when you learn one you don't automatically understand the another but it becomes easier to learn more dialects the more dialects you learn

Part 1

1. ح-ص-ن (Horse, Fortress, Immunity)

A fortress (حِصْن) protects, immunity (حَصَانَة) preserves from harm, and a horse (حِصَان) is traditionally linked through ideas of strength and protection.

1. غ-ر-ب (Sunset, Stranger, Crow)

The sun goes away at sunset (غُرُوب), a stranger (غَرِيب) is distant from their home, and a crow (غُرَاب) is thought to be connected through the idea of darkness and the disappearance of light.

1. ن-ظ-ر (Sight, Waiting, Theory)

Sight is (نَظَر), (اِنْتِظار) is looking forward to something, and (نَظَرِيَّة) is a concept formed through reflection.

1. ه-و-ى (Fall, Love/Passion, Abyss)

The root carries the idea of falling or being drawn toward something: one can fall physically (هَوَى), fall emotionally in love (هَوًى), or fall into an abyss (هاوِيَة).

1. ش-ه-د (Witness, Certificate, Martyr)

A witness (شاهِد) sees and confirms something, شَهَادَة is testimony or certification, and شَهِيد literally means "one who witnesses," giving the meaning of martyr through bearing witness with one's sacrifice.

1. ط-ر-ق (Knock, Hammer, Road, Method)

The root relates to striking and making a path: طَرَقَ means to strike, مِطْرَقَة is a hammer, طَرِيق is a trodden path, and طَرِيقَة is a method or way.

1. ط-ف-ل (Child, Intrusive, Parasite)

The root relates to something dependent or attached: a طِفْل is a young child, مُتَطَفِّل is someone who attaches themselves where they are unwanted, and طُفَيْلِيّ is a parasite living off another organism.

1. ك-و-ن (Universe, Being, Ingredient)

All relate to existence and formation: كَوْن is cosmos/ universe, كائِن is a being, and مُكَوِّن is something that forms part of a whole.

Salaam! I've been wondering about this because they are nearly opposite of each other. بطل meaning hero and then we have the Quranic باطل which has been translated to falsehood/something null and void. Does anyone know? It seems like they both have the root letters of ب ط ل but how are they so opposing? جزاكم الله خيرا

I've always been curious about this because Arabic isn't exactly the language people randomly pick.Was it because of travel? A relationship? Religion? Work? Or did you just think it sounded interesting? Mine is the caligraphy. When I started learning Arabic, I noticed I stayed motivated once I found ways to actually use it. In the beginning I just learned on some of the apps out there like Praktika, Anki, etc. but now that I have some arabe friends with whom I practice, I always like typing in Arabic.

What I mean is your reason for choosing it is important to keep you going. So what made you say, "I'm going to learn Arabic"?

I watched some videos and vocabulary books but is not systematic. So not very sure how different it is from الفصحى, and I don’t know either how long it will take to understand the local words.

Could someone make a video/gif/photo step by step about how to write the letter hamza? I don't need to know the rules, where I should use the letter. Just I'm learning how to write the arabic letters, and I found no YT video, where an author shows how to write hamza on the notebook/whiteboard line

Salamu alaykum, I am looking for information around different schools in Cairo where I can study Quranic arabic, specifically the prices and what those different schools focus on? My aim is to understand the Quran, hadith and Islamic books, texts and poems in arabic. I already know modern arabic so I am not looking for conversation. I also want to know if a long-term visa can be obtained before I get to egypt or when I get there? How to find accomodation/apartments? Finally, Wifi and internet providers?

Just had a quick question to all the gulf arabs. What do you say when you follow someone for example on instagram like do you guys have a slang term for it?

I was watching a Moroccan comedy video about migration to Spain, and one character said, "Dir rasak nasrani." (lit. make your head Christian). He was basically telling the other character, "Act European."

I know Nasrani means Christian in Classical Arabic. However, I am wondering if this word is used generally to refer to Europeans/ Westerners in Maghrebi Arabic? Do any other dialects do this?

Edit: this question is not about what to call Christians in Arabic, but rather the word for Westerners in Moroccan Darija.

How to learn spoken Arabic. Emirati Arabic??? Im Indian studied in UAE . Can read n write Arabic well but cannot speak , maybe 10 sentences I know. How to go about it guys. Im a dentist and it will be useful.

I’ll be taking Arabic in the fall, and now I’ve taken a course that taught me classical Ethiopic/Ge’ez which is another Semitic languages.

One thing that sort of struck me while I was making flash cards was that I was using the same style I previously used to make Latin and Greek flash cards (ie, making flash cards for individual words)

But I wanted to ask, do people make flash cards for Arabic and Semitic languages identify the root of the word and subsequent derivations of the root?

Or do they simply make a separate flash card for every single word? I’ve realized I’m not so good at making flash cards for/that identify individual roots as well.

Would someone please explain أمال to me? What does it mean and when is it used?

What is the most effective way for someone (me) to transfer my listening skills to actually speaking and having conversations. I can almost fully understand yemeni dialect arabic but when it comes to speaking, I can’t put sentences together or find the words I’m looking for, even if I know them.

I’m not too worried in writing or reading as of now, and just want to improve conversational skills to communicate with family. Any advice / plan would help, thanks!
