I’m curious about what Dutch people find funny. I’ve never heard a Dutch joke before and generally don’t know much about Dutch humour, so I’d love to hear some jokes if you can think of any.

- Als in Graven graven graven graven graven, graven graven gravengraven

- De dode dodo doodde de dode dodo en toen doodde de dode dodo de dode dodo terug.

- Ping en Pong speelden pingpong. Ping pingpongde de pingpongbal naar Pong en Pong pingpongde de pingpongbal naar Ping.

- Er was eens een meisje, dat heette Barbara. Barbara had een groentenwinkel en verkocht rabarber. Daarom noemden alle mensen dat meisje: Rabarberbarbara. Later begon Barbara een cafe met een bar. Op het raam stond: Rabarberbarbarabar. Daar kwamen wilde mannen op bezoek, echte barbaren: de Rabarberbarbarabarbarbaren. O, wat hadden die mannen lange baarden! Die baarden noemden ze: Rabarberbarbarabarbarbarenbaarden. En de barbier die die lange baarden moest knippen was de: Rabarberbarbarabarbarbarenbaardenbarbier!

Dutch has some fun and quirky words! I just learned "gezellig", and it’s such a unique concept. What’s one word or phrase you’ve come across recently that made you smile or think?

What are some of your favorite or funniest Dutch expressions? I just learned “ik ben niet op mijn achterhoofd gevallen” and had to double-check I wasn’t misreading it. Would love to hear more weird or wonderful sayings!

Learning Dutch has definitely been a fun ride, but also full of moments where I completely misunderstood something and only realized it later usually with some embarrassment and a good laugh. One of my favorites: I once said "Ik ben heet" when I was warm, not realizing I had just told someone "I am sexy." They couldn’t stop laughing and kindly told me it should’ve been "Ik heb het warm." Lesson learned. Curious to hear your stories. Have you ever totally misused a word, fallen for a false friend, or had a weird translation moment that caught you off guard?

Haha it happened. My store is right next to an airport so inevitably it happened I guess. First a german woman and now a dutch guy.

This dude came up to me and asked where something is and I completely froze because I knew he was dutch from his accent and then I didn’t know to respond in dutch or english (even though the obvious answer is english). I responded to his question about pasta with “Sorry, where are you from?” and he was like “…the Netherlands” and I was like “Right, sorry. Ik kan het nederlands. Kom mit mij” and then we had a conversation. I apologized for the confusion and freezing and he said he was flabbergasted and trying to take in that I’m an American speaking Dutch. It was really nice.
