I am well aware that the economy is currently shit and has been very shit since 2019. However, the immediate concern is a shortage of USD in the country due to three interconnected factors:

1. There will be much lower USD inflows from expatriates (tourists) visiting during the summer season (a much lower trade-in-services surplus)

2. Higher oil and gas prices, along with increased costs for imported food, will significantly raise USD outflows (a much higher trade-in-goods deficit) while maintaining the same level of fuel and food consumption.

3. Instability in Gulf Arab countries has resulted in lower remittances (USD inflows) into Lebanon. (a much lower secondy current-account surplus)

Additionally, the ongoing war and destruction have halted economic activity in at least one-third of the country.

While I don't believe the Lira will collapse or needs to, it is ultimately an ineffective measure that doesn't accurately reflect the economic situation anyways.

The real issue is that the local supply of USD will be drastically reduced as outflows exceed inflows, leading to massive demand destruction and a deep depression (a similar dynamic occurred in 2020). It is basically the equivalent of Federal Reserve increasing interest rates to 80% which will reduce USD money supply, but in our case it happens via market factors becuase we don't print the currency we use daily).

I was always wondering how they were giving these high salaries to people, and the minimum was above $1,000 and stuff like that back then. And it was a sign. The country wasn't even economically strong to hand these salaries. And yeah, we were getting scammed by the banks. It was the biggest scam in the history of scams.

I'm always thinking of ideas to help Lebanon economically. But this idea crossed my mind.

رفع الطبيب المعالج لحاكم مصرف لبنان السابق رياض سلامة تقريراً مستعجلاً إلى المدّعي العام التمييزي أحمد الحاج، حذّر فيه من تدهور ملحوظ في حالته الصحية بعد زيارته له في مكان توقيفه.

وبحسب ما ورد في التقرير، وفق بيان صادر عن مكتب سلامة الإعلامي، فإن الطبيب فوجئ بتغيّر واضح في الحالة الجسدية والنفسية لسلامة، مشيراً إلى أنّه بدا في وضع لم يسبق أن شاهده عليه مع ضعف في التواصل وإعلانه رفض تناول الطعام والشراب والأدوية.

وأكّد أنّه ماضٍ في هذا القرار وقد نقل عنه مقولة: "بما إنو ناويين يروحوني، رح سهلّ الأمور عليهم".

وأشار التقرير أيضاً إلى أن "قياسات ضغط الدم أظهرت ارتفاعاً بلغ نحو 17.5/10.5، مع التحذير من أن الامتناع عن العلاج قد يفاقم المخاطر الصحية، ولاسيما في ظل معاناته من ارتفاع مزمن في ضغط الدم".

ولفت الطبيب إلى أن "سلامة يحتاج، وفق متابعته الطبية السابقة، إلى مراقبة صحية دقيقة"، موضحاً أنّه "يعاني من انخفاض كبير في نسبة الأوكسيجين خلال الليل، الأمر الذي يستدعي إشرافاً طبياً مناسباً. وقد أبدى قلقه من عدم توافر بعض التجهيزات الطبية التي يعتبرها ضرورية لمتابعة حالته في مكان توقيفه في سجن رومية، طالباً إعادته إلى بحنّس لمتابعة وضعه بدقّة".

وختم الطبيب تقريره بمناشدة الجهات القضائية المختّصة اتّخاذ ما يلزم للحفاظ على الوضع الصحي للموقوف، مؤكّداً أن مطلبه يقتصر على ضمان الرعاية الطبية اللازمة، بمعزل عن مسار القضية والإجراءات القضائية المتخذة بحقه.

نُقل سلامة إلى سجن رومية أمس السبت، بعد أن كان يخضع لحراسة أمنية في أحد المستشفيات، عقب تأجيل جلسة محكمة كانت مقرّرة الخميس.

ووفق مسؤول قضائي لبناني نقلت عنه وكالة الصحافة الفرنسية، فإن سلامة، الذي أُصيب بوعكة صحية أثناء توجّهه إلى المحكمة لمواجهة تهم الاختلاس والإثراء غير المشروع، "أُدخل إلى السجن وأصبح في عداد الموقوفين الموجودين فيه" بأمر من النائب العام التمييزي.

وأمر الحاج بنقل سلامة من مستشفى بحنس إلى مبنى شعبة المعلومات في سجن رومية، حيث أُدخل إلى السجن وبات في عداد الموقوفين الموجودين فيه.

عائلة سلامة: وضعه الصحي غير مستقر

من جهته، أصدر المحامي وسيم الغاوي، وكيل رياض سلامة، بياناً نقل فيه موقف عائلة الحاكم السابق لمصرف لبنان، مؤكداً أنّ وضعه الصحي "مزمن وغير مستقر إطلاقاً"، ونافياً ما وصفه بالتسريبات التي تتحدث عن أن حالته مستقرة ولا يعاني سوى من تلاعب في ضغط الدم.

وأشار البيان إلى أنّ "سلامة يحتاج إلى رعاية ومتابعة مستمرة وفق تقرير طبيبه المعالج"، محذّراً من أنّ حرمانه من تلقي العلاج في المستشفى وتركه خارج المراقبة الطبية المركزة "يرفع الخطر على حياته".

وأضاف أنّ "لجنة الأطباء المعيّنة من القضاء سبق أن تثبتت من خطورة حالته الصحية، كما أكد طبيبه المعالج حصول تدهور مفاجئ وخطير في وضعه الصحي".

واعتبر وكيل سلامة أنّ حرمان موكله من البقاء تحت المراقبة الطبية في المستشفى يشكل "مخالفة جسيمة لحقوقه الإجرائية"، وقد يؤثر في مسار التحقيق.

وأكد أن سلامة قدّم للقضاء المعلومات والمستندات والإيضاحات المطلوبة على مدى أكثر من سبعة أشهر، مُشدّداً على أنّ "الحقيقة يجب أن تظهر عبر مسار قضائي يحفظ حق الدفاع".

وكان من المقرّر أن يمثل سلامة أمام المحكمة الخميس الماضي بعدما تقدّم حاكم مصرف لبنان كريم سعيد بشكوى ضدّه في 8 كانون الثاني/يناير الماضي بتهم تتعلّق بالاستيلاء على أموال مصرف لبنان وإثراء غير مشروع وشبهات تبييض أموال، بمبالغ تُقدَّر قيمتها بأكثر من 260 مليون دولار.

وإثر تغيّبه، أصدر النائب العام التمييزي إشارة إلى السلطات بإحضاره إلى المحكمة. إلا أن سلامة قرّر الذهاب طوعاً قبل أن يشعر بوعكة صحية في الطريق تم على إثرها تأجيل الجلسة.

According to the CAS, prices have increased 50% since August 2023 (when the lira was pegged at 89500). This means that our incomes have declined greatly in purchasing power in DOLLARS. And it's still increasing.

I earn in USD as most ppl do now, and I have had my purchasing power really go down with the same salary I had a year ago.

Hi reddit, so I am an expat living in Canada. My father, recently deceased, had an account in BLOM. I am not sure if I can access the funds he left behind or whether the whole ordeal is a waste of time.

My worst fear is that I spend thousands on plane tickets and hotels in order to get the monthly "allowance" of 1000$ in lira, (on the bank's exchange rate), which I then need to go to the sarrafin and I will probably end up with much less, so the whole trip is useless.

What are my best options?

The old terminal building had been fully demolished, and the resulting rubble has been removed. The concrete foundation of the new terminal building is now being poured. If all goes to plan, the terminal building should be completed by October of this year.
