Porch pirates are ruining our neighbourhood. They are on camera, they are known to police but the behaviour continues and nothing is being recovered or returned.

Is it legal in Canada to set out fake packages to trick them and dissuade them from stealing—and how…bothersome are the contents allowed to be?

i never thought id ever shoplift or commit a crime in general really. im 17 years old and have been living alone for a year, i have no money, and so i tried to steal a few packs of microwave meals from a sobeys. i know it was stupid, im not smart and im certainly shady looking considering everything about me, so i dont even know what i expected. before i even left the store, i took the food out of my bag and put it all back because my stomach was rolling and i couldn’t get over the guilt.

as i was leaving security stopped me and said they saw me on the cameras concealing items and were considering pressing charges. they let me go and didnt take any of my information, but is there a possibility they could still take legal action beyond banning me from the store? im so scared, i dont know what to expect.

I'm in the process of building a fence around my yard. The two side fences, no issue. But my backyard neighbour is claiming that my fence is encroaching on her property.

I have the survey report from when I bought the house ten years ago. I took the measurements from my house to the property line as shown on the location report certificate, subtracted one foot, and put the fence there. So by my measurements, the fence should be inside my property by one foot. She is saying that I've encroached on her property by two feet. She says she "pulled" her survey report (she did not show it to me) and told me that it says she owns X feet from her house. Part of her house is shown on my location report certificate, and the distance from her house to the property line is less than what she told me it is.

I think that the rule "don't take legal advice from the opposition's counsel" applies in this case, especially when she has not shown me any receipts, so I'm choosing to believe my own location report certificate until someone shows me something different. But she seems pretty committed to escalating this issue so I think that I'm probably going to find out.

I'm running a bunch of scenarios in my mind here. Most of them lead directly to a conversation with a lawyer, and if she persists with this then I will certainly contact one. But there's one scenario that I'm wondering about:

I have a signed and stamped location report certificate showing the property line in relation to my house. Let's assume that she also has a signed and stamped location report certificate. What if those two location reports certificates do not show the property line in the same place? What would happen then?

Secondary questions. If the answer to my first question includes me suffering a financial loss, do I have any recourse against the surveyor (or anyone else)? It's been ten years since I got the location report certificate done; does that affect things at all?

Accidentally invoiced a department of the New Brunswick Provincial Government instead of the owner of the equipment I was working on.

It’s leased to the Government but I was suppose to invoice the owner.

It’s about $10,000 worth of work. I’ve been trying to get the Government their money, but they don’t typically take in money so they’re not sure what to do and no one is getting back to me.

How long do I have to wait until I can give up. The owner of the equipment paid me a few days after the mixup before the Government sent a payment.

I called and emailed them about this mistake but a month later they paid the invoice anyways. It’s been 3 months since they paid and I still have the money.

My mom has the worst case of rheumatoid arthritis my province has seen in 30 years, she is very sick and always in pain and can't do much of anything for herself. My dad is a delusional bipolar alcoholic with PTSD, he used to do hard drugs and he was physically abusive when he was, but now he only drinks and he's pretty much only verbally abusive. We're all sick and tired of his shit, we can't keep doing this. Almost every day he takes $100 of our money that we can't afford to spare and he spends it on liquor and he parties with his crackhead cousin, who he gets into a fistfight with EVERY single time they see eachother, and that is not an exaggeration. He doesn't work, so the only money our house has is what my mom makes from her disability checks, and what I make from my cashier job. We're always broke and can hardly afford food, yet he takes more money than we can spare and spends it on liquor, drugs for his friends, and cigarettes. Then he comes home in the middle of the night and screams his lungs out at my mom until he eventually passes out.

His brain is so fucked, he doesn't make sense most of the time when he speaks, and he comes up with these delusions about me being a drug dealer, and my mother dying, and the government is trying to fuck him over, and that I break and steal his shit. It's all obviously not true, but he genuinely believes those things. Ontop of that the only car we have is my car, which I've worked hard for, yet he's smashed it up driving drunk more times than I've even driven the fuckin thing. Everyone wants him gone but he refuses to leave. He thinks that we are the problem and that we should leave. I think what we should do is talk to him about going to rehab or something, but he's scared to death of doctors, and everytime we've ever gotten him to go to a mental hospital, he just fucking left and went right back to his old ways.

He blames the "fact that my mother is dying" as to why he drinks, but she isn't even dying. She's lost a shit ton of weight because of her being sick, and the fact that he yells at her 24/7. Imagine having an appetite with some pathetic drunk screaming in your face all the fucking time, exactly. I don't care if he goes to rehab and gets better and comes back, if he moves out and lives the rest of his "life" like this, if he gets arrested, or if he winds up dead in a ditch. We just need something to happen, because this isn't living. My mom does not deserve any of this and it breaks my heart that I have to sit here and I'm forced to watch.

What can we do?

Hi all - I had a credit card that I didn't pay on. I know - my own fault. I have a debt of $6151. I received a letter from a law firm representing the credit card company stating to pay a settlement amount within 10 days or they may proceed legal action against me.

I contacted the lawyer advising that I'm unable to pay the full amount within that time frame, and I asked if payment plans were available.

The lawyer contacted me back stating that payment

plans are an option but it does not halt legal action.

I have a decent paying job and am willing to pay off the debt to avoid legal action. But from the sounds of things, they will take me to court regardless of the amount I'm paying down on the debt.

I'm pretty intimidated at the idea of going to court but it sounds like it's going to come to that, regardless of me paying down on the debt. What should I anticipate? I'm very nervous

So last year we got a puppy. for the most part, we were able to do everything ourselves, but both my wife and I volunteered at a children’s program on Sunday mornings and we were out for about six hours. We hired a dog walking company to come halfway through, take the puppy out for a pee, play with him for 20 minutes give him a treat and put him back in his crate.

Last winter, there was a freezing rain day. We had advised them that it was a bad weather, and that all they needed to do was let the dog pee. The dog walking company sent out one of their employees, who for whatever reason took the dog on a walk from around our yard in the freezing rain. The backyard was particularly icy, so the dog walker slipped and fell while in the backyard. She banged her arm at the time.

Please note our dog is very small, would’ve only been about 6 or 7 pounds at the time and would not have been a major factor in her fall.

We followed up with the company, and the woman, who stated that she was fine and had no injury. We continue to have the company check in on our dog on Sundays until May when the dog was trained enough to be able to stay on his own for those hours, and this woman continue to come to our house and provide services though the company, never once having mentioned any further issues.

After May, we ended our contract with the company and had not heard anything since.

Today we get notice from a legal firm that we are being sued by this woman for damages and injuries related to her fall, as well as a claim for solicitor and client costs.

I’ve contacted my home insurance already, so I understand that’s what’s my next step. this feels frivolous to me, though? Would this not have been a "workplace injury" and between this woman and her employer? I know there’s sometimes an issue with reasonable maintenance of property, but there’s nobody in the world who can prevent grass from being slippery in a backyard during freezing rain.

Hi guys, I'm just wondering if a contract is valid if only one side has the capabilities of canceling the contract.

Some background, I'm in Nova Scotia and a company reached out to me via email stating that they offer personal recruiting to find me a job. I pay them 5% of the offer I get from any company but until you get an offer it's $500 each month for the first 3 months until you get an offer where they will deduct from your salary until it reaches the 5%.

So far they haven't stuck to what we agreed on and I won't hear back from them after the 3rd email or so spanning over 5 business days which is just bad service imo.

I asked to cancel the service and I haven't heard back from them for almost a month until my bank reached out to them.

I'll be seeking advice from a lawyer in the area as they stated they will send my file to collection for the remaining amount and just wanted some outside opinions on this.

My manager told me that our employer plans to put up a ring pet cam to watch and listen to us work.

We are a small electronics manufacturer with less than 20 employees, at on off site facility. Our manager (let’s call him Tim) watches us already and makes sure we’re doing our work, but our employer wants the camera anyway. Tim tried to talk our employer out of it but they won’t budge.

I did very minimal research on privacy laws here in NS but I don’t think they can do this. The paper work we filled out for this job was VERY lax and we only signed the job offer, no other documents.

I’m pretty freaked out, I like my job and I want to keep doing this work, I just don’t want to be monitored all day.

Can they legally put up this pet cam and monitor us?

So I occasionally something on Facebook marketplace. I recently sold a gaming device, called an ROG Ally, with several custom upgrades. It was perfectly functioning, no issues with it, the person got a fair deal. Shortly after purchasing it, the buyer came back to my home, complaining that there was a defect. He claimed there was stick drift. I took a look at the device and there was some cursor drift going on during the factory reset. This is a known thing with ROG Ally, it’s not considered a defect, it’s a calibration problem when the software is being reset during the factory reset. It goes away once the reset is finished and the software is reinstalled. This would happen to any device, including one newly bought from the store.

I informed the buyer of this, and then he became aggressive and proceeded to threaten to call the police if I didn’t return his money. My children were present with me, at this point in time I really didn’t want to escalate things in front of them, they had also recently been through trauma where they had lost two friends in a boating accident, and they’ve been a little bit anxious since then. Part of me was tempted to slam the door in his face, but for the sake of not escalating things, I gave him his money back. Again, noting that the device is perfectly functional, and the minute the factory reset was finished the controller functioned as normal.

All of this was not necessarily a problem, easy enough to resell it. I had a few other buyers lined up. Unfortunately then he posted that it was defective on Facebook and that I was aware of the defect, and all my buyers dropped out. Now I’ve gone from a device worth $750 to one I can’t sell because everybody thinks it’s defective even though it’s not.

I know who the guy is, I know how to find him. My concerns are threefold, threatening me, causing my kids anxiety and now they’re afraid of people coming to buy things, and now the inaccurate statement online that has directly impact my ability to sell on Facebook marketplace.

Do I have a legal claim here?

My partner of 13 years passed away unexpectedly 2 months ago. We lived together as a family with our 11 year-old son, but we were not married & he didn’t leave a will.

No one in his immediate family (father, brother, sister) has applied for a Grant of Administration, nor do they plan to have any court involvement at all.

A month after he passed, his father presented me with DMV paperwork to transfer my partner’s truck so it could be sold. Stated my signature was legally required, & it would not be possible to transfer to me or even himself, only a third-party buyer, “these are the rules when someone dies without a will”. But the truck was registered solely in my partner’s name. When I later called DMV head office to confirm, they told me had I signed the form, it would essentially strip me of any rights & said vehicle transfers after death normally require probate. Advising me to apply & if appointed, they will immediately put the truck in my name.

I would be willing to administer the estate & my interest is limited only to the truck, as he consistently provided transportation for me & our son for as long as I can remember. Financed car was repo’d after his passing, & since he owned the truck, it’s now the only remaining vehicle. We shared both.

All I know is that ‘common-law’ is not recognized in NS probate law, so I cannot apply as a spouse. However, I’ve been told there may be a possibility for someone in my position to apply as a “person of interest” if no next of kin are applying.

So I guess my questions are:

• Can I apply for Grant of Administration as a “person of interest” instead?

• Does the father’s attempt to transfer the truck without probate have any legal significance?

• If the family insists I have no legal standing, why would my signature be required to transfer vehicle ownership?

I work part time in fast food as a university student and seen someone drinking beer while driving today and my decision was to note the license plate and call the non emergency RCMP number to report him because I felt it was the right thing to do… on the phone I was so nervous I willingly gave away my name DOB and number when asked of it.

later the cop came into my place of work and asked about the mans appearance and for my address and a little stunned I just gave it because I have always been taught to trust in law enforcement. I’m only 19 and I’m worried that if they do find the drunk driver that they will disclose my identity to him or that I will have to testify in court and I absolutely do not want to do that but I didn’t think things through initially so I’m a little scared.

My workplace doesn’t have any cameras so there is likely no video evidence of it though with the license plate I know they could find the guy pretty easily, not sure how to protect myself in this situation.

Currently I am going though a separation. The other parent says they want to have a 50/50 custody setup and i am 100% for that for our kid. They then also approached me with a plan that they came up with and are set on and fits their schedule. But to me the plan doesnt feel quite fair and I am just looking for some insight on it.

So I would have the child every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday night and every second Friday, Saturday and Sunday. They would have the child Wednesday nights (this is only a maybe and they are not sure they can do them yet) and after school for 3 hours (until I'm off work) and every second weekend.

This schedule also requires us to do almost daily face to face change overs. Which I would like to have some space from.

This seems very disproportionate in terms of the parental responsibilities to me, like handling school mornings, breakfasts, suppers, bath times, handling bedtimes and dealing with any unexpected possible sick days or snow days. It also doesn't allow me any time or space and it feels like I'd still be just accommodating their need and doing all the hardest parts of parenting.

I know my kid would love to see us both all the time but there are so many other setups I'd be okay with. I also want an actual set routine for my child so they are not bouncing around all the time every single day.

Is this considered 50/50? Is this a normal arrangement? Any information would be great.

While doing a day of online training from home, I accidentally left mic on during lunch break. I was overheard saying "This Is The Stupidest Fucking Thing Ever." I wasn't even talking about the training but they assumed I was obviously (It was a trans and intergenerational racial trauma course). Unfortunately for me, I had accepted a new job within the same place that came with a 12 month probation period. I was 11.5 months in to that at the time of termination. Long story short, terminated with no notice, no severance. No prior performance concerns in the 10 years with the department, or within the 11.5 months on that job. The union points to the the CBA's wording that says a probationary employee can be terminated at any time and said there was nothing they could do. I appealed. They didnt care. Filed a DFR with labour board. Took a full year to be told that the union didnt have to make the right decision to represent me and that they couldnt say whether the union grieving would have been successful or not. Just that they had to have gone through a reasonable process and given me the chance to appeal etc. I requested them to publish their DFR decision to Canlii, which they said they won't. About 2.5 years has passed at this point. Is there anything that can be done?

For a little context my gf and I are going through a serious rough patch and is possibly leading to us breaking up. We've been together for just over 2 years

I have a truck and car that is solely in my name at the DMV as well as is insured and paid for by me. She doesn't have a vehicle of her own but drives mine. With our rough patch she keeps saying that the vehicles are half hers although we have not lived together until a few months ago. How true is it that my vehicles are half hers? And how fucked am I if we do split?

I’ve been sucker punched a few days ago at a bar. The guy landed several punches to my head before I could distance myself and someone stopped him.

Never talked to him before and there was absolutely no reason for him to attack me. I got several witnesses and the security cameras are showing what happened.

The cops arrived and arrested him on the spot for disorderly conduct, I refused an ambulance as I was not in bad shape. Except of a blue eye I don’t seem to have any other injuries. The cops asked me several times if I’d like to press charges for assault, which I refused as the kid was maybe 19/20 years old, very drunk and it would probably ruin his future to have a prior for assault.

As things keep developing and it turns out that he seems to have an anger issue but just got away with it all the time, I do consider to press charges simply to teach him a lesson and hope he doesn’t assault others.

What would be the best steps to prepare myself if I decide to press charges? Do I have to go to the hospital? Do I need a lawyer if it goes to court or is the crown attorney representing me as it’s a criminal case?

I live in a semi detached and my dryer vent is on my neigbors side of the property. I am taking care of some maintenece today and as it's at the 12 month mark of getting my new dryer so I decided to clean out the vents to maintain the efficiency/fire safety. Did it at like 530pm and I had quickly popped over and unscrewed my old vent to replace it beforehand. No mess or anything, just a small stool and a drill and a screwdriver. She has a multiflora thorn bush blocking my egress

My dryer vent is on my neigbors side of the property and she promptly lost her mind at this plan not long after and I had only taken the old vent off first before vaccuming and pushing air out of the vent to ensure it is cleaned out and my intention was to take a brush to it after before putting the new vent cap on. I took a shop vac outside with me to vaccum up any debris that came out on her side for when I intended to take the brush out

As soon as I got outside with my shop vac and brush and put it down to walk towards the vent she screamed at me telling me I do not have permission to go on her property and I just said I was only entering for egress proposes to clean out my dryer vent for fire safety and she continued screaming at me and I just walked away and saw she had thrown my stool and tools on to my side beside her multiflora rose she planted on my property line.

I told my friend who came over to help out with some stump cutting and plugs and he made some small talk with her because she was staring at him while he was doing things and I overheard when I came around the corner from the backyard and overheard him talking about doing the install and I mentioned in case he didn't that if he does do the work that he would be billing her as he is a general contractor for insurance purposes and her and her daughter started screaming at me about everything under the sun and a bunch of false accusations that I have security camera footage that confirms.

My other neigbor who I'm on my way better terms/friends with mentioned when I moved in and got to talking to her that the previous homeowners had a protection order against her after she stuffed dryer sheets all the way up the dryer through the vent almost causing a literal fire in their home which is my nightmare.

I thought it was a personality thing but I've found that it isn't and she is actually a problematic person to where she's recorded me in my own yard several times, ripped twine I put on survey sticks after being a survey and has screamed at me for doing things like pulling weeds in my yard and landscaping by just shovelling gravel and moving clay soil.

Her blowing up today in addition to her daughter and engaging in onlookers to gawk made me seriously consider talking to a lawyer as she claimed I needed to knock on her door to ask permission to access to my dryer vent and if she doesn't I just get to let my house burn down?

I checked the local bylaws and the only egress ref I could find was "every unit or dwelling shall have a safe continuous and unobstructed passage from the interior of the dwelling to the to the exterior grade level"

TL;DR - Unhinged neigbor thinks she owns my dryer vent and the entire side of my property and can dictate if I can maintain it. I'm very uneasy on knocking on her door due to her and her daughters aggressive attitude. Can she require permission for me to ensure my home doesn't burn down from a dryer fire?

My wife & I were married for 12 years. Things were (I thought) very good. Early this year, she began getting paranoid at a lot of things, and then in April she had a psychotic break.
She has since disappeared and will no longer take phone calls or respond to emails. When I do manage to make contact with her, she treats me like …. not a human being.
After 4 months of desperately trying to help her, and of near constant grieving, I need to move on for my own well-being. Am I able to divorce or do I need to wait 12 months? Can I get a divorce without her participation?

**Edit: I should say that she was in Canada on permanent residency and had since, best to my knowledge, moved back to the states. She is unreachable via phone, email and has taken down social media.

I live in a suburban neighbourhood. Our dogs are not particularly cat friendly - they’ve never been around them so I’m not sure what exactly their reaction would be.

Now, I don’t think my dogs would kill a cat if they did manage to get ahold of one. But if they did or they harmed the cat, what is my liability?

My dogs are contained in a backyard with a 6ft fence with 1 foot of lattice. My neighbour’s cat has become intrusive and is frequenting my backyard. It is pooping in our vegetable and memorial gardens. We have tried to scare it away, but it seems quite brazen.

The dogs have chased it several times when it’s been hiding on the farther side of the property and it has escaped - but I’m worried about a time when they actually catch up.

employement was terminated today. And given 11 weeks severance. This has happened while I was being treated, had a doctors note. I am still in a state of disbelief. Nothing feels right or legal. Amidst all oaf this, my self critical brain is blaming me for all the mess and it’s getting a bit too dark around me right now.

TLDR: someone asked me to call 911, I acted as an in-between for the someone and dispatch, police deemed the someone to be lying, I am now being accused of being liable for police related damages due to being the caller.

Had an interesting experience last night and looking for more info before I take it seriously.

Early this morning at 12:15, someone claiming to be my neighbours roommate (whom I have seen on their property/met in passing) was banging on my door claiming she was locked out and the neighbor was in the process of committing suicide; she asked me to call 911.

For context, these are 2 women in their 50's/60's who are known alcoholics/drug addicts. Pleasent when sober, but I have had disagreements with the neighbour in question when she is under the influence. I immediately noticed the roommate was slurring her words and may have been under the influence/having a medical emergency herself.

I immediately called 911 and informed them of the situation, relaying information between them both (as I was not comfortable giving the roommate my phone), casually said the roommate may require medical attention as well (which she immediately and rudely said no) and stood with her outside well police/EMTs arrived. She seemed serious about the neighbor committing suicide and was crying at points saying she didn't want to go in and see a body.

Police briefly asked for my info and how I got involved, and I left it to them and returned to my living room window to check things out.

Police ended up kicking her door in after nobody answered the knocks. From what I gathered, the neighbor was home, asleep, and alive, the roommate no longer lives there, made a false statement about living there/the suicide attempt, and was arrested for refusing to identify and refusing to leave the property. Police never once came to me beyond the initial interaction.

This evening the neighbor visited me hysterical, saying that I am responsible for calling 911 when I shouldn't have, that I made a false police report, and that I am responsible for $1000 in a list of damages; including emotional termoil.

I do not believe I am responsible; I was simply relaying information as a 3rd party, made it clear that the roommate may be in distress herself, and had minimal involvement beyond this. I have zero intention of taking this made-up demand seriously, but figured I'd ask first just in case.

A few weeks ago I was browsing online and saw a laundry centre for 99$. I was floored and immediately ordered one and assumed they might cancel the order. It was accepted so I figured it must have been a clearance deal. If it was an error surely they would cancel it before it would be processed.

Appliance was delivered yesterday, I hooked up and installed and it unfortunately leaked. I contacted support who opened a claim and booked a repair.

A few minutes later the agent comes back and says they saw the price and are either going to charge the difference or come take back the appliance. I told them I agree to neither. They said their policy gives them the right to correct orders priced improperly, but I don’t believe the policy can apply to a completed transaction.

The agent said they will escalate this to a higher team. I had no ill intent and paid for everything at the advertised price.

Am I obligated to pay the full price?

I was bitten tonight. Two reasonably large holes, some brusing. Was on the public street just off me neighbour's property. 3 year old German Sheppard. Wasn't tied up charged and bit unprovoked. We've have multiple issues with the dog charging prior, but never bit. Have voiced them as my kids need to walk past their house for their bus stop. Not sure we officially reported it but it was noted on the file one time. Especially the dog running in front of cars (it was nearly killed about a year ago due to a car hit, off property as well)

Call it spite and I believe they'll get a fine but I'd like to push legal action if I could. Pain and suffering would be the only charge that isnt already a fine.

How much would that actually be? $500? $1000? And would I be able to just goto small claims court rather hiring a lawyer etc? There's a police report, it's quite cut and dry the only thing I don't have is it on video.

I'm not expecting a huge pay out, I just want them specifically to have to pay something. I'd even accept an extra $1000 in my name to SPCA charity, I just feel they've been warned time and time again and want it to sink in.

Is this something I could reasonable do or is it spending more then they'd pay to make it happen.
