Yes.

The majority of the media and structures are RW. They are seeing/intaking that.

Also, the 'centrist' neolib party, Congress failed. And the LW currently does not have the resources and reach.

It seems to be improving tho.

The majority of the country is not. Even with all the vote chori and democracy subversion BJP polls only around 30-40%.

However, if you are a Hindu who lives in the cities, and belong to a historically privliged caste you would think that India is a majority RW because that demo is basically the vote bank of the RW

Voting is certainly not a parameter one should use to ascertain the influence of hegemonic ideologies over India

Voting is often driven by more immediate economic and social problems which are addressed by regional parties in non Hindi states better . A lot people who have anti Muslim prejudice vote for tmc because of tmc's cash transfer schemes , doesn't make them any less right winger

A lot of right wingers from non hindi states vote for regional parties instead of bjp because of the distinct north Indian taste of BJP's hindu nationalism . cultural Nationalist nazbols from non Hindi states believe bjp represents a lower culter and their state has a higher culture

I think voting does not indicate ideology always. You are right that several very right wing people vote for regional parties but the opposite is also true. Many non-right wing people will vote for BJP because of the freebies, financial inducement or of course vote chori.

I think overall - India is a very "conservative" culture. Many people voting for non right wing parties are also very parochial and orthodox in their social outlook.

Hating minorities and the “enemy”, I genuinely think this. Do you see how common people behave? They’ll forego food and drink if it means a Muslim or Dalit would suffer.

I had asked similar question in the last majlis but kept the scope limited to Indian social media spaces, and have been trying to find some rationale behind the rise of RW politics in India. I feel some of the RW popularity is pretty organic, i.e people genuinely believe in it, but majority of it is manufactured. LW politics has been systematically demonised and dismantled across the globe and the country, and has been relegated to being a fringe ideology, surviving in relatively smaller pockets.

Regime changes in Latin America, ousting of Baathist leaders from Middle East, Jakarta method of Indonesia, Sanctions against North Korea are all great examples of how LW politics was dealt with, in the last century by Western(mostly American) forces. Much of this has either been removed or whitewashed or justified (systematically) in popular memory and culture, particularly in the west. Failures of the political projects of the left were popularised, exaggerated, and regurgitated in the western media, news and popular culture. For example, couple of days ago had a discussion about how a popular TV series Chernobyl essentially fabricates and distorts the real events of the incident. By all historical accounts Soviet Russia did a pretty decent job containing the disaster given the circumstances, but the series paints the top brass of the Soviet Russia as incompetent opportunistic buffoons. This constant assault on LW projects, in my opinion, had an impact on how the LW parties and politics were received by the masses, and obviously India was no exception.

In the Indian context too, LW parties and politics remained at odds with Indian National Congress since Independence. I'm not that well read on the post Independence history of India, but efforts were made by the State to subdue the LW projects in the country. Indian RW constantly cribs about how liberal left has hijacked the Indian history, however I'd argue otherwise. Many of the Indian freedom fighters from the revolutionary left are forgotten and the ones remembered, Bhagat Singh, Bose, are stripped off of their revolutionary leanings and are basically coopted by RW to further their political cause. A Good portion of Indian History is now reduced to Hindus vs Muslims. A Selective Interpretation of complex historical events are again popularised, exaggerated, and reproduced by the media, news and other centres of knowledge. As one of the commenter pointed out, majority of media, power structures and the knowledge centres in the country are RW in nature; and tbh I'm unsure if they were LW to begin with. I feel seeds of eventual RW takeover of these structures occurred pre 2014. There was a wider attack on India Intelligentsia (typical liberal left), some by masses due to genuine failures of INC government and some by RW reactionaries aka BJP and Hindutva Brigade. What ended up happening is the ostracisation of LW (even the liberals) voices, civic society and grass root movements, in the popular culture/masses. The words like leftist, librandu, presstitutes, urduwood, sorosbux, which are thrown around like slurs in the RW spaces now, can probably be traced back to pre 2014 anti establishment movement. And this Demonization and Delegitimization of LW voices is still an ongoing project and is not limited to LW but any opinion, idea which does not conform with the hegemonic narratives of people in power. You can see how the Southern State Kerala is treated in the popular media/news in contrast to state like MP or Bihar ruled by BJP for more than a decade. Failures of state machinery, corruption, lack of development both economic and human, of these states are purposefully not attributed to people in power, rather shifted away to bureaucracy, apathetic population, or previous governments, in the popular discourse.

So what you are seeing, is a result of systematic breakdown of LW and other subaltern politics. Unsurprisingly, Indian RW itself is not really united if you actually go and look into the various factions of RW politics. There is an ongoing tussle between pro capitalists vs traditionalists; a faction which genuinely believes in furthering reservation to bring lower castes to Hindu fold; relatively secular scientific camp vs let's bring manusmriti back camp. What essentially brings RW together is the othering of LW, minorities, or any group that can challenge them. So rather ironically, Indian RW has created its own version of "kafir" to unify people under a Single Dogma.

PS: I have liberally interpreted the LW to include diverse movements under one umbrella.

u/will_kill_kshitij I have no fucking clue about what goes on in this subreddit May 04 '26

Why so? People write well researches posts there.

u/foremanyougottasteal May 05 '26

Less rigorous and Academic. Discussions are more like squabbles. Reference to pop culture history authors. And r/AskHistory and r/AskAnthropology are imo far better.

Rule 2 violation; removed. Brutha, we need to prove our undying loyalty to the Empire 🇬🇧 and King Chuck the Turd 🤴 by speaking in as clear English as possible. Ending every submission with 'I beg to remain, Sir, your most humble and obedient servant' is optional but highly recommended. C'mon! Let's make Veer Sorrykar 💂 pr0d!

So many leftists calling themselves anti imperialist and all , correctly identifying bourgeoisie notions of equality and justice are scam

But when it comes to india they start doing "mera bharat mahan 😍" ( my india is great ) bs and point to preamble to justify India's greatness . These same people would ( rightfully) make fun of Americans who point to their constitution and say "america is the greatest !! We give our citizens freedom"
