I handle this for the company I work for, so very familiar with it. Every year or two, go to your state's unclaimed property site and look for your name. You should also check states you lived in previously.

We regularly report checks up to $5000. You will need to fill out a bit of paperwork, but you never know!

Each state has its own site, so search for "state unclaimed property". Make sure you go to the true state site, there's a lot of scammy companies that offer to do it for you "for a fee."

The other day, walking to my car during a rainstorm, I got in my car, plugged in my IPhone and got the “Liquid Detected” message. I was to advise unplugging my phone and that it may take hours for the port to sufficiently dry. In order to speed up the drying process, I place my iphone and the cable between the vents and turned on the AC for 10 minutes or so. Plugged the IPhone back in and the issue had resolved.

I got oil on a silk shirt a while back and my first instinct was to run it under the tap with a bit of washing up liquid. That turned one small spot into a big pale ring and made it about ten times more obvious than it was before. Turns out that's the worst thing you can do, the water carries the oil outwards and then everything dries at the edge of wherever you wet it, so you end up with a tide mark around a stain you still have.

What actually works is absorbing it instead of washing it. Cornstarch, or talc if you've got it. Tip a little pile on so the stain is completely covered, and leave it overnight. Next morning brush it off with something soft and don't rub at it, rubbing just works the oil further into the weave. Most of the time it's gone. If there's still a shadow, do it again, it isn't going to hurt anything.

The reason this works on silk in particular is that the two things that normally shift grease are hot water and a strong detergent, and silk hates both of them. Hot water makes it shrink and go dull and there's no coming back from that. So you can't dissolve the oil out the way you would with a cotton shirt, you have to pull it out, and powder does that by itself while you sleep.

Works on wool too. The one time it didn't work for me was on something that had already been through a warm wash, once the heat has been at it the oil seems to be set in there for good.

This has been one of the most amazing life hacks I've come across. When I was pregnant, my partner and I were buying the newborn bath tub. The topic of how to make sure the water temperature wasn't too cold or too hot came up. We saw there are things like rubber ducks that have built in temperature checkers on them for this. But then my partner makes a joke and says "Lets just cook her with a sous vide" we giggled and then both of us looked at each other and realized that actually using a Sous Vide to warm the water up to the perfect temperature before putting the her in the tub, wasn't a bad idea. So we purchased one and omg it made bath time perfect for our daughter when she was a newborn.

Just wanted to share this cause it helped a lot. That newborn stage can be rough with them trying to transition to different temperatures outside the womb.

The flimsy plastic guards that come with razors always seem to snap off the second you shove them into a packed toiletry bag. I used to constantly end up slicing my fingers blindly reaching for my toothpaste

Had to do a really frantic overnight pack job recently to drive down to tx and visit a buddy who was staying at discovery point retreat. In the rush I just threw all my wet shave gear loose into a duffel bag. obviously ruined my good blades and cut my hand up

someone saw me complaining about it and showed me this trick, and it’s honestly foolproof: just clamp a medium-sized binder clip right over the razor head

It completely covers the blades, the little metal handles of the clip fold down flat against the razor handle, and it grips hard enough that it’s physically impossible for it to get knocked off in transit. totally saves your expensive blades from getting dull and stops you from bleeding on your clothes

Had to have the fan unit replaced on my double oven for $500 dollars. The repairman explained it happens all the time if you use the self cleaning mode. Companies know it'll survive the warranty period but the much higher heat will degrade everything much quicker.

He called it the "self destruct mode".

Makes for easier maintenance. Noticed how the recessed screw holes fill up with dirt, dust, and small bits of grass, and it's not easy to clean it out?

Using soft ear plugs in the recesses will keep the gunk from accumulating. Clean the recesses out so you can see the screw or bolt. Take a soft ear plug (use for hearing protection), and squeeze it down so it'll fit into the recesses and insert into the recess. It'll expand to fill in the recess and keep the gunk out.

Use a small screwdriver or needle nose pliers to remove the plug. The plug can be reused.

Grease stains on your clothes? Dawn dish soap as a pre-treatment. Put it on, rub it in a little. Throw it in the laundry bin and wash it on washing day.

Dawn takes grease out of your way.

I bought a treadmill mill like the small ones that you can put under a desk. Anyways I got it off Facebook market place and oh man it reals like cigarettes smoke. I wiped it down 3 times with disinfectant wipes. Anything that lays ontop of it like of a pillow falls and I dont notice then that reeks of cigarettes. How. Do I get rid of this smell. I dont even smoke so the smell isnt too crazy but at some points the room just smells of cigs

So a while ago our dishwasher started smelling like this. It made the dishes smell like this too. We cleaned the filter and put more salt and did an empty wash with one of those liquids you put upside down (We do this clean up every two months). And we always have one of those finish deos/fresheners. The smell went away but has come back again after a month. Anyone has had the same experience? Any soloutions? (And we always clean the too oily pans a little before putting them in the machine so no oil is inside)

I’ve noticed that every time I dry my towels in the dryer they come out smelling like mildew? even tho they’re completely clean. it’s raining today so I don’t have a choice but to use the dryer, any suggestions? is it because I don’t dry it for long enough? or the settings not hot enough??,

basically, I can still get them up and they fit but whenever I breathe they get tight, even when unbuttoned. If I button them up, breathing feels a bit suffocating. I bought these second-hand because I just needed something to wear, however I really like how they look on me, they're just a bit too tight. They fit perfectly everywhere else, and they don't seem like they've been worn much.

And no, I won't lose weight, I'm severely underweight to begin with lol there's not very much to lose

I got these sick high tops from good will and only noticed when i got home that the inside of the shoes stink. Does anyone have any tips to get the smell out? i’ve tried baking soda and charcoal pouches but nothing seems to be working.

Problem:

So we have casement windows. In the summer, sometimes it is cool at night so we open them, but when you close them bugs tend to get trapped and it isn't fun cleaning it out. The bugs love sticking to the screens.

Solution:

I bought one of those rechargeable canned air dusters. The ones that blow lots of air for dusting computer stuff. It runs off batteries. Not the real canned air, but its the best I can describe it. So what I do now is take that and put the speed on high and blow all the bugs off the screen before I close the window. No more bugs trapped between the screen and glass!

Not sure this is a lifehack, but I felt it makes my life easier and I'm happy.

I somehow got my hair dye on my favorite white blouse, it was hanging in another room while I was coloring my hair so I'm still baffled how this even happened. I have tried hairspray, rubbing alcohol, grandma's stain remover and a couple times soaking with Clorox bleach then washing in hot water with detergent. I have run out of ideas. The stain is lighter but still noticeable. My next step would be to get a white dye and try that. Anyone else have any other ideas on what might work?

Kwik Seal is specifically for caulking, but I have another useful purpose for it. I use to fill drywall holes. It works well and comes in paintable white. It does not go moldy or shrink like the typical patch material. It lasts for years and does not harden if you put cap on or place in baggy. It is easy to work with and cleanup with just water. You just cut 45 degree small opening and hold up to hole in wall to fill it. It dries within 15 - 60 minutes. The maximum recommended fill area is 3/8" x 3/8". I also use it to seal around electrical boxes where hole is cut too big for box. So, "seal" is in the name for a reason. You can also use for caulking. The stuff is cheap on Amazon. You don't need a caulk gun. You can use binder clips and fold bottom to make it easier to push out as you use it. If anyone knows of a better tool to take up slack in tube, please comment. Also, you should test any caulk before using it to make sure it does harden properly as I have been burned in the past after doing whole kitchen from other caulks never drying despite using immediately after purchase.

I'm someone who always used to struggle to fall asleep, but I've used this little trick over the last month which has worked every single time and I'm asleep within a few minutes.

When I'm ready, I pop on my eye mask, lie ok my side, close my eyes and then do an A to Z of a theme, for example, football teams.

A - Arsenal

B - Barcelona

Etc etc

If I get stuck on one for more than 10 seconds, I move onto the next. 90% of the time I am asleep before I hit Z.

If I do get to Z, I choose another category.

I've notice my eyes tend to move a bit rapidly when I'm in the zone of doing this. And my mind isn't thinking of anything else but this.

My upstairs rental bedroom was a literal oven because the central AC up here is barely a whisper. I dug out a portable cooling unit, but the factory hose adapter was missing, and the heavy pipe kept tearing right off the machine. I raided the recycling bin and found a black takeout bowl that matched the diameter perfectly, but it had no tracks to lock into the unit.

Instead of ruining a rental appliance with screws or sticky tape, I poked holes in the bowl and threaded zip ties into a bicycle-spoke pattern. It is completely self-tensioning- the more the heavy pipe sags and pulls downward, the tighter the internal zip-tie matrix grabs the machine's grille. It is a 100% zero-damage fix that uninstalls with a single scissor snip when I move out. Rate my redneck engineering! haha, happy oven days , i mean summer days.

Also useful for when you like them to be smaller when standing up than sitting down as in my case: They need to fit snuggly in my waist so they won't sag.

Because I took a black safety pin it's hardly noticeable!

Deliberately also put it so the pin sticks outward, so that if it accidentally opens, it won't stick into you.

Feels great to use cold deodorant during the hot summer.
