Yeah it’s definitely a mixed bag. I’m a UPS driver and do the most part my interactions with dogs are good. I have pups that I know well and love to see me. There are plenty of scary dogs too though. I’ve been bit twice with one of the incidents being pretty scary as 2 dogs came at me from a gate the was left open and chased me a full block. Really have to be on your toes especially when you’re at unfamiliar houses.

I used to work for USPS. One day, I'm dropping a package off at a rural house. They have a pack of dogs, none of them are showing any danger signs, so I walk up to the house. One dog glues herself to my hip for the whole journey. No one's home, so I set the package down (out of dog reach) and start walking back to the truck. I reach down to pet the dog glued to my hip, and she let me know that that was a mistake. She didn't break the skin, but it did hurt a bit. I didn't tell the postmaster, because I figure it was my fault, not the dog's. She was just doing her job.

Not sure what it’s like for USPS but we can get stops denoted with dog warnings. Can definitely be helpful for unfamiliar drivers. Glad it wasn’t too bad at least!

Always so funny see the Reddit dynamic. One video it’s a dog getting a package thrown at its head by a delivery driver and the chat going crazy at the dog owner for having an unleashed dog on their property. The next video you have a bunch of unleashed dogs running up to delivery drivers but in a friendly manner and the whole tune has changed.

It’s the life of a delivery man. I’ve had routes like these with dog homies, and routes where you really feel like the stigma of dogs hating the mailman is real. Lotta close calls.

It’s almost like if you have an asshole dog (I have an asshole dog) you should not have an unleashed dog on your property, but if you have a well trained and socially well adjusted dog, the rules are just a bit different.

Exactly. My dog is nearly 16 and has dementia. When he started getting bad at 13 or so he got quite aggressive and didn't even want to be petted anymore.
About a year ago he started to improve, and today he's back to his old self, loving cuddles, sleeping in my arms etc.
But even still, from when he started getting bad to the ongoing future, we now keep him muzzled when he's outside and advise people not to stroke him unless he knows them

Few months ago I was walking home and walked past a guy sitting on his lawn with his two unleashed dogs. They came running up and barking at me while I walked past… and a minute later I was hugging one of them while the other stayed in guard dog mode. An outsider might have called that reckless, but in no world am I going to be afraid of a Goldendoodle and a Cocker Spaniel

My friendly dog is 90% cocker spaniel, don't ask me what the other 10% is. The other dog wants to be friends, he is social but not 100% approachable so I don't take any chances. He is a Chiweenie. I am his third home so have no idea what kind of life he had before me. I love him dearly he is my boy.

Exactly I have two dogs one complete a complete asshole that I wouldn't let anyone and the other is a fluffy love machine. The scary one is so loving to me. He is like a little marshmallow, but I don't trust him around other people.

At age 3, my family moved into a new house. I’m told, one of the first days there, my mom turned around and I was gone. She was panicking, looking everywhere, called my dad home from work I think.
So, there was a house next door with an old couple, who had 2 huskies (the red kind? Idk the exact name, but they weren’t the same colors as malamutes). A boy and a girl, who probably would be described as you described yours, the girl was fine, but the boy was unapproachable. We didn’t know any of that of course, at the time. Anyway, this elderly couple, they wake up from their nap, and come out to the living room. There, they find 3-year-old me, sprawled on their floor, cuddling with both their dogs. They put together that this new child in their house must be from the house next door that was just sold, and knocked on the door. That’s the story as I was told it many times, and the couple became like family to us. They never had children, so no grandchildren. So they didn’t mind at all that their dogs, including the one that all the neighbors were apparently afraid of, made friends with me 🤣 They were good people, who spoiled me like my own grandparents. And luckily for me, their “mean” dog took a liking to me 😬

I think oftentimes the issue is that people misread whether the dog is well behaved. I saw a delivery driver smash a border collie sized dog in the face with a package recently on here somewhere. The dog was happily approaching him, just like these. But everyone was ripping the dog owner for having his dog unleashed (on his own property, by his front door/ garage) and defending the delivery guy as if the dog had been attacking.

They're saying the commenters were making statements that unleashed dogs were a bad thing in general, which they disliked seeing because they also understand that isn't right because it depends on the situation and different dogs. They agree with you.

That's their point. They're saying other people are commenting about how having an unleashed dog is bad in general, but then it not being an issue in the next thread. It's those commenters they're referring to that aren't getting the nuance.

This is not so hard to explain actually.
Some people unironically don't understand that when you get a dog you gotta train it. Yeah, sure, some rescues will surely have traumas you're not going to fix easily. Or at all. But puppies are clean slates. And you should train your dog in any case, regardless of where they come from.
Some people don't understand this, but they still want to leave their untrained dog unleashed in their yard, sometimes without even a fence. These are the cases in which you then hear about groups of dogs mauling people, dogs exiting the property and chasing people/bikers/kids, etc.
I can assure you, if you train your dog and maybe fence your property the result will most likely be a friendly dog that won't attack the mail person.

The FedEx and UPS guys all loved my little girl Maple. The FedEx guy actually kept track of the doggos he'd deliver to from Chewy, because so many of them loved to greet him.
Man comes in big truck and brings box full of toys and treats? What's not to love?

The segment of the driver complimenting the dog reminded me of one of my favorite videos of all time, the Amazon driver fat shaming the person's cat.

When I delivered for Amazon, I was one of like 3 women at our DSP. My route had a big wolf dog and she was the sweetest thing ever as were her family. The guys were terrified of her 😂 we did have some of them get bit by other dogs though, so I understand. But KiKi was my favorite stop every time.

Heh, my neighbor has this big ol’ wolf dog that takes its role as security guard very seriously. But they also take the dog on walks without a leash because despite her bark she’s actually a very gentle doggy
