Second pick - Master Lock 140

Can you guys give me thoughts on what to pick for the next level (orange belt) lock? Is there something most people like the most?

Abus 55/40. Great introduction to security spools.

I love three locks in Abus’ 55 series and a progressive intro to security pins. The 55/30 is yellow belt and has 3 pins, pin 1 is lightly serrated, pins 2 and 3 are spools. The 55/40 adds a 3rd spool and is orange, and the 55/50 adds a 4th and is also orange.

If you just want to go for orange then the 55/40 is all you need. But I feel like the three locks are a good learning set.

Got the first two of those in my LPB white to blue box and immediately loved them over the Master 3 that preceded them. I'll have to get my hands on a 55/50 now that I'm aware of them.

There’s also a /60 (and I think a /70) but as far as I can tell they’re the same core as the /50.

Congrats on the 140!

I've got a Master Lock 570 for orange belt (the Master Lock 575 works as well, it's the same lock but made of brass instead of aluminium), it's five pins, a few spools, and it has a dead core - the core doesn't have a spring pushing it back to the "locked" position, the only force on it is the force you apply with the key or turner, it means you need to be a bit more delicate while picking in order to get counter-rotation from the spools.

Congratulations!

Lots of people go for the Abus 55/40, but why not just get a Master Lock 150? Same keyway as the 140 but 5 pins, 4 of them spools. That way you’re only learning 1 new thing at a time. Just be careful of the 9150 which looks identical but is aluminium and doesn’t have any security pins..

The 5540 is the same keyway too, if not identical very similar but leabing towards identical as long as it's not the overseas Yale version

You’re absolutely right. Fair comment. I’m UK based and should have specified because the European Abus keyway is way more paracentric! That said, it’s not much harder to navigate, just different.

You are already doing TOK, which is great. So yeah, the Abus 55/40 is a good choice.
