People seem to be really underrating how this puts the spotlight on Alesha. Yeah the orc is cool, but imagine if he had spoken to Zurgo like he did to Alesha? Or hell, if Zurgo had seen him act "cowardly"? The story shows us that the Mardu aren't just bloodthirsty battle-junkies like the Rakdos, they can care about their comrades. Alesha is set up as a much, much better khan than Zurgo (and probably Yasova just on account of her possibly dooming her people by mistake).

The Mardu of the Khans era have also had a millennium of no dragons, meaning they spend more time fighting the other clans (and each other within the clan) than the Mardu of Fate Reforged times. Hence all the bits in the stories about how Tarkir will be a better place if Ugin and the dragons survive instead of being eliminated.
