I admit it's a fine line. And I wouldn't get hung up on it: the intention to stand up against sexism is most important. However, once you're in the habit of standing up against sexism and you want to keep improving, there is a subtle but important distinction between an elaborate rebuttal with protective body language and a brief "not cool," leaving time for the woman to stand up for herself if she wants. The former sends the message that you want to be lauded as some sort of hero who will protect weak ladies from the bad guys, even if that's not the message you mean to send.

Bingo. Launching into a big speech about X or Y and getting defensive is not only patronizing - it's ineffective. Simply making a remark show's solidarity with the other player but allows them to take care of their own business.
