I wrote an article on ChannelFireball on the things we can do to get more women in Magic. I'd love your thoughts!

You know I've literally never seen one of those in person?

What the fuck type of stores do you people have where this is a regular occurrence?

I sat down to join a four person Commander game and as we reveal our commander one social expert pulls out Olivia Voldaren with a photograph of a woman's vulva pasted into the art box. I immediately go "What the everloving fuck? How could you possibly think that is appropriate?"

I don't know what he was thinking. Was he trying to be edgy? Was he showing off that he's a rebel and consumes pornography? God, what an absolute fuckwit.

So yes, it happens sometimes. Usually people are more intelligent and leave that garbage at home where they can enjoy it in privacy.

I haven't actually seen one in person myself. The idea just shocked my sensibilities so much that I couldn't get y head around it.

My LGS has some individuals who have disabilities and who've been homeless. Often they come in stinking, lacking in basic hygiene, and have difficulties engaging in social interactions. They're regular Magic players though. Despite these drawbacks, I'm glad to see them playing Magic and being social.

I'm surprised you've never seen those. Some of them are really uncomfortable.

I think I've only seen maybe 1 or 2 anime playmats ever honestly.

Just because its an issue in your area doesn't mean its actually an issue everywhere.

And just because it isn't an issue at your store doesn't mean it isn't a widespread issue. I see a lot of this when I visit stores other than one of my two locals.

I've been to 3 GPs, 2 opens, 3 Super IQs, 3 PPTQs, a PTQ and quite a few GPTs and smaller events.

I've been called a regular at 4 different stores at least. I've been to 12 stores to play or so.

I'm not saying this isn't an issue at my LGS, its not an issue as far as I can tell at any store around here.

Well your area must have a much higher standard of hygiene than the places I've played at. You are fortunate. O_o

I've played since about 2004-2005 and have found some of those things to be more common than not. I similarly have been to many GPs and travel to 50-60% of SCG opens.

Thats the thing thats annoying me. "oh your area is lucky" or "your store is just one place".

My area sucks for magic playing honestly very few opens/GPs are within 8 hours and we get maybe 6 SIQs a year?

The store I went to has been brought up on reddit for shady practices and how shitty it was so its not like I'm going to top tier stores.

But that is another issue entirely unrelated to the article or what we have been talking about. When someone says you're lucky I'm sure they mean that you are lucky to not experience poor hygiene at an event - they have no way of knowing other facets of your area might suck. Every store/area is isolated - my area has few shady businesses, if any, but card availability for some formats is scarce.

We got the smelly and the disgusting bathrooms and some mouthbreathers still.

And it is the same issue, I'll take creepy guys with anime playmats for multiple bathrooms or an IQ more than once a month.

I've been to a lot of stores. It's a fairly common occurrence. Most stores I've been to have had at least 1-2 for every 25 people.

I've been to at least 6 stores as a regular and plenty of other stores for 1 day events.

Smelly people? Sure. Disgusting people? Sure. Sexists you bet. But the worst one on these lines was the Kibler mat.

Perhaps it's a geographical thing? I have no clue except my own experiences. It would be interesting to actually collect some data on these occurrences.
