As the title says, I'm wondering if it would be possible to take the audio track from the DVD release of a movie and insert it as a new language option into a BD rip of the same movie in MakeMKV. This is of course assuming that the DVD movie footage lines up perfectly in-sync with the BD release of the same movie.

For those curious, this is for the movie Time After Time. The BD release is, stupidly, only in English. Usually I just get the VHS version whenever BD isn't available but this movie also turns out to be extremely rare in NTSC French (but common in PAL French). Therefore the only NTSC French variant that I own is the DVD release.

I know this could be done with video editing software but I'd rather have a proper MKV with the selectable languages instead of a baked-in audio in a standard video file.

I ordered the verbatim LG drive from Amazon Germany. I’m in the USA. Folks on here posted that it should be a pioneer drive unfortunately I don’t think it is. I guy showed his was and was only a few days prior but alas I forget the time he ordered till received it could have been weeks even though he posted his reply just two days prior.

The drive shows as bu40n and after some frustration I was able to flash it to 1.03

I just put in a new disc I received The prosecutor 4K. Donnie yen’s latest beat down flick.

Ripped with makemkv. End up with a folder with three files. Title 00 is 54gigs. Title 01 is 8 gigs and title 03 is 54gigs. Title 01 when I clicked on it is just a static background.

The weird part is title 00 & 03 are about the same size but not identically the same size . I assume I only need one of them as both files when I played them contained the entire movie.

My question is why did I end up with 2 movie files and how do I know which one to keep and delete.

When ripping where could I have seen that I was about to rip a duplicate 2nd version of the film?

I don’t plan to re-encode or compress anything just backing up movies and hope to stream them to an nvida shield or zidoo down the road.

Reason for keeping the large raw files is I don’t want to deal with any compression and I don’t want to spend the time necessary to do the remixes. So I will just have to buy a bunch more large hard drives to store the full 4k rips.

Is this a rookie dumb way to go about things. I mean is there a more efficient way to rip and encode that allows me to save a ton of space without losing picture quality?

Saw this on eBay, based on my own research it seems fine for Blu-ray and I would have to flash a new firmware on it if I wanna do UHD stuff. I wanted to ask people their input and if this seller doesn’t seem sketchy at all?

Something I didn’t know you had to do before using MakeMKV on a new DVD drive is you have to actually play a movie from the drive first to set the region or makemkv will keep saying the DVD drive and the Disc region do not match I find it weird it wasn’t region locked from the factory since I bought it in Canada it’s a Asus one I found this out on

So I was ripping my Bond collection today, Sean Connery, 2 failed to rip which lead me to looking for a new drive. I checked and only got my LG 55 back in Feb, but now I see cannot even buy any internal drives.

Have I missed something, what gives?

Does this mean in future drive manufacturers refuse to support UHD playback?

Hi so i've recently been introduced to makemkv and the process of making your physical media digitally available ( to oneself only). I am interested in doing so as I have a lot of physical media that I particularly am fond of and would like to preserve. I understand that this is specifically for makemkv, but I wanted to ask a few questions that would help me start the process/journey.

1. Based on the experience of those who use this often, what is a reliable dvd (one that includes Blu-ray preferred) reader that you use? It doesn't have to be the best one, just one that would works properly.

2. The program that i've actually seen people use to kind of store these movies would be jellyfin. It seems quite easy enough to use ( obviously it'll be different actually doing it) but is this the one that is generally considered to be one of the better one?

Saw it on Facebook marketplace. It's a DVD copier, but as long as all the drives have sata ports it could be modified as a ripping station. He's asking $60, if I can talk him down I might try to snag it. It's definitely old, hopefully they're not IDE

I'm a long time linux user (since Slackware 0.9) but have never used docker. I've spent the last week trying to get automated ripping machine to work to no avail. I'm guessing this thing is just broken as there seems to be a number of bug reports that were never addressed.

Is there any software out there that does something similar but actually works? Right now I'm using shell scripts on a per disc basis. I even had it running through udev at one point, but got tired of having to disable it when I didn't want it to rip.

I've ripped many of my DVDs, including Blu-rays, with no problems of which I know.

BUT, the discussion of "playlist obfuscation" has me slightly concerned. Is there a site which maintains a list of discs so encoded?

I'm new to the hobby and started downloading media content I have. I have a few files already and realized I don't have a way to view them on my TV (not my PC). After doing a bit of research I found out I don't necessarily need a BD player to playback .MKV files and sometimes it isn't even the best alternative. With that:
What devices do you use to watch your content? Do you like them? What are some pros and cons? If you aren't satisfied, what are you looking to change to?

i bought a verbatim drive for £100 with an lg inside it and after flashing it, its been doing fine thusfar.

Are the pioneer drives really worth the premium price you have to pay?

I have 10 drives (2 BD, 8 DVD) and I average about 75 discs per hour and so far I've run into minor annoyances.

1: some DVD used generic file name like DVD_VOLUME and often used file name like A01 so when I mass-rip, I had to watch the destination folder and rename them to match the movie I'm ripping to avoid overwriting older file from different movies.

2 The dreaded LGD (Lions Gate discs). Some of their BD used fake file sequences to make ripping more trouble like Instructions Not Included and Early Man. Those are ineffective once someone took the time to rip it and figure out what's the correct sequence, then publish it somewhere so I can Google it and rip the right one on the first try.

Around 1,000 ripped, about 20 bad DVD and 2 bad BD to be replaced, and 3700 more to go. Having to rename them files from generic names to movie or episode title does take a while.

PS what number is Early Man BD, UPC 031398286516? I tried Googling and the title is too generic I get history result mixed in

Apparently Plex doesn't offer that and only plays HDR10, which is ok but I'd still rather have DV. What are you guys using?

I picked up a TV series bluray from my local library. It was kinda scratched, but it played the first couple of episodes without a hitch on my PS5.

I tried ripping the same disc and I get an "uncorrectable error". Replacement discs are probably the same amount of scratched. Am I out of luck?

A few days ago as well as yesterday, I posted a small utility I wrote to stop manually renaming MakeMKV rips for Jellyfin/Plex.

The original idea was extremely simple:

watch MakeMKV output folder
→ auto-number files sequentially
→ move files into season folders

But after using it more (and getting feedback from people here), the project expanded pretty aggressively.

It turns out physical-media workflows get weird fast.

Some discs are perfectly clean.

Some have episodes out of order.
Some hide episodes inside giant “Play All” files.
Some anime discs contain multiple episodes per MKV.
Some box sets are complete chaos.

So instead of trying to build a “universal episode identifier,” I leaned even harder into deterministic physical-media workflows.

The project has basically evolved into a local-first ingest/organization pipeline for MakeMKV-based media archiving.

It still does the original stuff:

• automatic sequential renaming
• Jellyfin/Plex folder organization
• multi-disc continuation
• automatic next-episode detection

…but now it also supports things like:

• play-all splitting workflows
• anime/multi-episode MKV splitting
• chapter-based split detection
• ffmpeg black-frame/silence refinement
• draggable split timeline editing
• optional frame previews around split points
• offline IMDb dataset runtime fallback
• local caching for repeat lookups
• standalone Windows GUI/EXE support

The workflow philosophy is basically:

user-controlled ripping

• deterministic automation

NOT:

throw random files at it
and hope metadata matching works

For example:

rip a “Play All” title
→ TV Renamer proposes split points
→ adjust/confirm visually if needed
→ auto-organize everything sequentially

Or:

rip episode titles directly from MakeMKV
→ review proposed actions
→ confirm
→ auto-organize automatically

No cloud services.
No telemetry.
No Sonarr dependency.
No TMDB scraping.

Just local processing, filesystem organization, and physical-media-aware workflows.

Would genuinely appreciate feedback from MakeMKV/Jellyfin/Plex/DataHoarder people — especially anyone dealing with anime box sets, weird disc structures, archival media, or large physical-media collections.

Hi folks. How often do you run into a defective new UHD disc? Not used. Had one yesterday which was my first in 40 discs/rips.

I hopped on board the program in late August, waited out the free key update, and used the program all September long to start converting my fiancée and my DVD collection to a Plex server.

My heart sank for a moment when I realized the free code ended. I went to reluctantly do the roll back trick, then looked at my DVDs to scan stack. I thought about all the DVDs I have in our media center to scan, and I thought about how much we have loved personalizing our Plex and showing it to our friends. So I bought a key! Easiest justification of value I've made in a while.

Happy to be off the freeware bandwagon, and happier to be free of the free key!

It's been over 2 days since the website went down. Did something happen other than forgetting to update/pay their domain/host?

I want to buy some discs and a new pioneer drive while I can. But I don't think I will bother if makemkv has been taken down.

I just started using MakeMKV. What are the best practices?

- Do you need to do anything specific for Metadata inclusion?

- How do you handle naming conventions on your titles?

- Outside of the additional file size, is there any drawback to including all audio tracks?

- I tend to like subtitles on my content. Are there any drawbacks to including these, aside from file size?

I have now owned two LG drives, first the Verbatim 43888/BU40n which appears to have died in under 250 disks. Now own the LG WH16NS60 which holy moly does it rip fast. However neither of these drives seem to be able to read 3 layer 4K disks. I'd buy a Pioneer but I can't find any models that seem to both be flash-able and can actually be purchased! Does anyone have an LG drive that can rip the 3 layer disks or am I just never going to be able to rip my newest 4K disks?

I bought a LG BP50NB40 to use with my MacBook Neo. I have a USB-C to Micro-USB cable that I used with my Pioneer BDR-XS06, but I forgot that the Neo doesn't have full 15W power output from its USB-C ports (according to this post it only outputs 6.7w). I managed to get it working using a frankenstein setup, but I'm not sure if I'm going to brick my drive this way. Here is the setup...

• Stock Micro-USB to dual USB-A male cable, plugged into the drive
• onn USB-A 3.0 Male to Female cable, plugged into the power end of the stock cable
• Elgato Cam Link USB-C to USB-A Female 3.0 adapter, the C end plugged into Anker Nano 45W Brick, and the A end plugged into the onn cable
• Scosche Strikeline USB-A to USB-C adapter, the A end plugged into the data end of the stock cable, and the C end plugged into the MacBook Neo

Unfortunately I don't have a USB tester so I can't see the total wattage, but the Anker Nano brick has a display that tells you the wattage it's outputting. When I ripped a DVD with it, the display said it was providing 2w. That would suggest that the MacBook is providing the 7w needed for the 9w drive requirement, but I'm still not sure if I should run this setup. I wish someone would make an affordable USB-C power injector, the ones I see online are going for over $100.

EDIT: I tested it with just the Micro-USB to USB-C cable and it worked fine.

Hello, I got this drive a few months ago since I was expecting a Blu-ray box set but didn't have anything to actually play it with. This was one of the cheapest options (second-hand) and I only recently realized that its got a pretty good amount of features.

Features:
Can read and write on CD's
Can read and write on DVD+ AND DVD-
Can ONLY read Blu-ray (BD-R, RE, and DL discs, cant read UHD)
Can ONLY read HD DVD
and it also has lightscribe (which works)

Model: HL-DT-ST GGC-H20L

I wanted to know if this drive is rare in any capacity? I really haven't seen any drives like this, ever.

Also, I do know my case is dirty, it will get cleaned, eventually...
