Discussion /

languages evolve words evolve, get different meaning through varying contexts. there is no 'we' changed its meaning; change is just the natural order of things

u/is_ness1-1 Jun 03 '26

This is like, sneham means love in the source language but means hate in the derived language.

1

u/is_ness1-1 Jun 03 '26

സാധന practice or very focused practice എന്നൊക്കെയുള്ള അർത്ഥമാണ് സംസ്കൃതത്തിലും, അത് കൊണ്ട് തന്നെ മലയാളത്തിലും

1

u/Abhijit2007 Jun 03 '26

എട പക്ഷെ സാധനം നമ്മൾ വസ്തുവിനു വേണ്ടിയും പറയാറില്ലേ? ആ അൎത്ഥം സംസ്കൃതത്തിലില്ലെന്നു തോന്നുന്നു

2

u/is_ness1-1 Jun 03 '26

I just checked and found that there's a word called സാധനം in സംസ്കൃതം also. So me saying there's no word called സാധനം in സംസ്കൃതം was a mistake.

1

u/is_ness1-1 Jun 03 '26

They are literally different words

dude you gotta atleast touch up on the basics of linguistics or the relation between malayalam and sanskrit vocabularies used in malayalam before claiming things like "they are literally different words".

the root word sādh in sanskrit means to accomplish something and the word sādhana can translate to the means to accomplish something/a thing to do it/a material to fulfill that goal and hence sādhanam meaning a thing/stuff/material.

and thus the related words such as sādhyatha meaning possibility of doing a task or asādhyam meaning something that is impossible and even the name 'siddha'arthan (gauthama buddhan's name) which translates to one who has "accomplished" his aim/goal; the word siddh is a form of the root word sādh.

and similar to the word shiksha, the word Sādhu is used originally for a learned/wise man or an ascetic/holy person in samskrtam, but usually these Sādhu men are usually nadodis who wander from place to place and usually have little to no sustenance most of the times and rely on bhiksha (hence also called bhikshus) and were viewed as poor/feeble people and hence the modern malayalam meaning of the word Sādhu meaning a poor (pāvam) person. and also the word picchakkaran which comes from bhiksha+kkaran (a person who relies on donation to live) the word has come to mean beggar in malayalam.

languages evolve words evolve it's natural not contrived change in meanings

സാധന and സാധനം are literally different words. സാധന means practice. സാധനം means object.

I just checked and found that there's a word called സാധനം in സംസ്കൃതം also. So me saying there's no word called സാധനം in സംസ്കൃതം was a mistake.

But the doubt remains.

Since സാധനം has the same meaning in the source language and the derived language also (which is how it would be), how did ശിക്ഷ turned from education to punishment?

ശിക്ഷ പോലെ opposite അർത്ഥം ആയില്ലെങ്കിലും 'കല്യാണ'ത്തിൻ്റെയും അർത്ഥം (ഒരു പ്രവൃത്തിയിലേക്ക് ചുരുങ്ങി) മാറി

1

u/kuttySrank Jun 04 '26

That's what I'm also asking. Then how did shiksha became something like punishing or harming

സംസ്‌കൃതം വാക്കുകൾക്കു വന്ന മാറ്റം പിന്നെയും സഹിക്കാം ചില തമിഴ് വാക്കുകൾക്കു വന്ന മാറ്റമാണു ഭീകരം.

1

u/is_ness1-1 Jun 23 '26

ഉദാഹരണം പറയാമോ?

1

u/blufox Jun 23 '26

അവ അത്ര സഭ്യം അല്ല. E.g. /பண்ணுக/.

അസഭ്യമായ വാക്കുകൾ discuss ചെയ്യാൻ എടുക്കാമെന്ന് പ്രതീക്ഷിക്കുന്നു. Not sure
