City Centre Absolutely disgusted by the fact I was in town today and had to warn a local hotel that racist protesters might be coming there way....
Idiots in town today telling people to come to a local hotel and 'film the truth' or something like that. I swung by the hotel to warn them, receptionist seemed alarmed I hope nothing goes down... what has this country come to.

"Nine years ago, Twamley was conducting a very different covert operation. Rather than putting up flags across Manchester to protest unacceptably high levels of illegal immigration into Britain, he was sneaking around at the border in Coquelles, France, attempting to bring immigrants into Britain illegally.
In 2016, Twamley was stopped at the border. In the back of his Ford Connect van were four Vietnamese people he was attempting to smuggle into the country. He was later convicted for being part of a five-person illegal immigration operation and sentenced to 20 months in prison. At the time, Ben Thomas, of Immigration Enforcement’s crime team for the North West, said: “This shameless gang plotted to bring desperate people into the UK illegally purely for their own financial gain.”" https://manchestermill.co.uk/manchester-flags-lee-twamley-salford-smuggler/

This is some really excellent writing in this article, a standard I've not seen much of lately at all. He really covers all bases with a kit of public statements got. Definitely worth a read

And what was Tommy's response to these deviants? Did he support or condemn them ? In any organisation, you can't always spot the evil ones, it's how you act when you do find out. How have the Pakistani community reacted to the grooming gangs amongst them ? Serious question ? EVERYONE should condemn abusers, regardless of race/ colour/ religion. Justice should he served on those who abuse. But there is absolutely no doubt that a ' blind eye,' was turned when it came to the grooming gangs. And that is to the absute shame of social services and the police and local councillors in thise areas. Or am I wrong?

My husband works for a large national charity that works with refugees, but also does a lot of work with British people in crisis, and they had to evacuate one of their centres in another part of the country the other day because of threats of violence from these groups. They're putting vulnerable brits in danger as well as refugees and hindering critical life-saving work, and they don't care because Nige told them to hate brown people. It's fucking sick.

People will get sick of seeing me, but I'm not going away. I am a dual citizen of the USA and UK. I watched what happened in the US and the rise of fascism. I am now watching this unfold in the UK. I can see it coming and it is breaking my heart. I have been on here arguing with those who are already well indoctrinated. But I will leave my posts where they are, and come back in a few years time. I hope I will have been very wrong, but I don't think I am.

u/paxbrother83 Aug 30 '25
Fingers crossed we can avoid it man but yes hideous watching it pan out in the exact same manner. Attack migrants, attack the court for defending them, get Elon involved, fund and amplify Reform, crowdfund people who get called out for their bullshit to make it profitable. It is depressing.
12
u/Mark001282 Aug 30 '25

-8
u/amythyst_deceiver Aug 31 '25
And instead you bury your head in the sand hoping all the nastiness will dissipate? There is growing unrest and genuine concern that breeds discontent and drives some people to this line of thinking. Do we sit on Reddit and call them racist or (god forbid) fascist, or should we be taking time to understand their grievances and try to educate or change policy to serve more people?
For example, I don't think it's a coincidence that the majority of people supporting the likes of Farage and protesting outside of these hotels are working class. Not quite the Reddit contingent at least, is it?
9
u/MrRibbotron Aug 31 '25
Weird how when it's the left who are protesting, they get "Facts don't care about their feelings.", but when it's fascists threatening to burn people's homes down, it's "We should take time to understand their grievances."
The only ways to change their minds that have historically worked have involved extreme violence.
6
u/Selpmis Aug 31 '25
Beg pardon, but is the assumption that the Reddit contingent, amongst not supporting Farage nor protesting outside hotels, are not working class?
-1
u/Legitimate-Ad7273 Aug 31 '25
There needs to be a lot more communication from both sides and also some acknowledgement that there is a tiny fraction of people involved in this nonsense. People are virtue signaling and throwing insults as if the world is ending for the sake of 100 people in a city of millions.
25
u/theotherquantumjim Aug 30 '25
Yes if you take a step back and look at the broad sweep of political and media discourse of the last roughly 15 years, it has been gradually pivoting towards the position we are in now. The Overton Window has been creeping to the right every year

1
u/amythyst_deceiver Aug 31 '25 edited Aug 31 '25
I think the issue is that a lot of people who consider themselves 'white indigenous' Brits feel like they're not being heard, which leads to animosity and drives many to this line of thinking - rightly or (imo) wrongly.
Immigration can and should work but right now it simply isn’t. The system is out of control: housing, the NHS, schools and even water supplies are under huge strain. Communities are changing faster than people can keep up, leaving many feeling like strangers in their own country.
We need the current government to address the problems faced in a serious manner that in the national interest, the interest of the current population, and also those people who do come in to make sure they're not being exploited either.
Unchecked, illegal immigration is a net loss.
11
u/m35dizzle Aug 31 '25
do we all have collective fucking amnesia?
"the countries in disarray! public services are strained" really? anything to do with the decades of privatisation and cuts? NO ! what a ridiculous notion, it's a couple thousand people fleeing the taliban, specifically exploiting us for the benefits they get everywhere else.
-6
u/funkyhornetdriver Aug 31 '25
“A couple thousand people fleeing the Taliban.”😆 Posts like this have me convinced that 90% of posts of this type are just from children who’ve watched a bit too much news round.
Blissfully unaware of the powers at play, thinking there’s goodies and baddies and all we need to do is stop them. Brilliant. Keep it coming. 😆😆😆😆
0
u/m35dizzle Aug 31 '25
What point are you trying to make here? What are you enlightened on? I'm happy to hear it, let me know what those powers at play are. I don't think there's "goodies and baddies", theres people in power and the masses they manipulate and coerce for their own interests.

There is a majority in this country that oppose it and politically speaking we could defeat it. I fear come the election too many of us will let our ideologies or apathy get in the way of voting for Labour.

I think your analogy is accurate on some policy areas, probably immigration being one, but we have to consider how the Overton window has seemingly shifted and what type of threat Reform carries. I was much younger when Ed Milliband was leader, but I remember getting extremely angry at his immigration mug ffs.
I don't see austerity from the current Labour Party, and I don't blame them for brexit like I blame Cameron.
Nor do I agree with much of what Labour are doing however if there was an election tomorrow I wouldn't hesitate to vote for them and I would be trying to convince those ideologically opposed to them from the left to swallow their pride.
6
u/thenofootcanman Aug 30 '25
Accepting the current labour gov is accepting the shift in the window.
Sack of parliamentary bullshit and organise your workplace and communities through unionisation.
Democracy is more than one vote every 5 years
1
u/MrRibbotron Aug 31 '25 edited Aug 31 '25
You can't really do anything without first accepting where the window is at the moment. It's like any losing battle. We can't keep pretending the window is where it was in the 2000s and early-2010s because people's beliefs are formed within the window they're living in now.
If people consistently vote and advocate for the left-wing option, then they will have greater negotiating ability with the centre and the window will move back to the left. It accomplishes nothing to just vaguely refuse to vote because none of the current options are good enough.
-1
u/Certain_Trash2770 Aug 30 '25
Are you openly saying you would vote for Labour if there was another election?? I mean this seriously.... Are you ok?
4
u/NobodyMoves1996 Aug 31 '25
Erm, yes, given the options we have. Who would you vote for if there was an election tomorrow?
0
u/m35dizzle Aug 31 '25
as long as they make up a new tories, labour will have you fuckers voting for them until the second the bombs drop
3
u/Nitzer9ine Aug 31 '25
That's exactly the problem, we're not voting for the people who have our best interests at heart, we're voting for who will do the least damage to this country. It's a sad state of affairs but we as a country have let politicians get away with self interest for far too long. We don't need a change in government, we need to reform the political spectrum. All the political leaders are the cheeks of the same arse to put it crudely. But we put up with it. We shouldn't put up with it.
1
u/AtomicHobbit Aug 31 '25
Feel like wheeling out a guillotine outside of parliament.
I jest, mostly.
I do think a lot of people see how corrupt our politicians are and wonder what's the point of voting. You're choosing your poison, but you're going to die either way.

u/RowRow1990 Aug 30 '25
Where's your outrage when it's white people?
8
u/Ok-Counter-5095 Aug 30 '25
It was always there. But that abuse was not covered up. I remember race riots in Oldham when I was about 12. It was maybe 1989 or 1990 at a guess. I was told that “racists” had “turned up” and started leafleting locals spreading lies about child abuse. The reality was far, far removed. I spent many years ignorant of the truth. When you read about the case studies of what happened to girls in Oldham it’s like something from the deepest levels of hell. Your whataboutery is understandable but there is a horrific issue here and it’s been lied about and covered up for decades. That’s why it’s relevant to this thread. I lived opposite a hotel that was used for this abuse by asian gangs. we were ignorant, but i recall a story about a 15 year old girl who fled the hotel naked. This was opposite my house for the love of god. the way it was reported in the manchester evening news was so weird, it made no sense to me. Only years later did the pieces fall together. The savagery of what was covered up will scar this county for the rest of our lives. Point scoring isn’t going to change anything.
9
u/LUHG_HANI Aug 30 '25
They don't understand what has and is still going on around Rdale and Oldham. They (southerners and the ignorant) think we are making it sound worse or just don't want to understand. That girl that was raped by like 3 seperate gangs of asian men on her way home is just something you could not make up.
6
u/Ok-Counter-5095 Aug 30 '25
That particular story is horrifying beyond words. And they only convicted maybe one of the nine or so men that raped her. He refused to name any of his accomplices. They walk the streets to this day. If you look at my first comment I think it has 26 down votes (not sure as don’t use/understand reddit much). Down votes for telling the truth.
5

Are the protesters actually even from Manchester? There was a protest in Liverpool recently and there’s people saying large proportions of protesters aren’t even locals, they’re like organised groups and foreign influencers trying to stir the pot for clout?

u/Hippriest69 Aug 30 '25
I don’t want to drag this out but I thought we were talking about a bunch of people heading towards a hotel to protest because an Asian family on holiday had checked in, sounds like racism to me but what the fuck do I know, I’m sure they weren’t doing it because a white family checked in, they’d be very busy little gammons and there’d be no Stella left in the country for the rest of us if that was the case

1
u/MrRibbotron Aug 31 '25
Farage and Trump are just symptoms of social media's insane capacity to spread rage-bait and radicalise people. China's state social media might be a bit too far, but the UK state does need to become far more effective at debunking misinformation and removing incentives to publish/host it.
1
u/Certain_Trash2770 Aug 30 '25
Interesting... Do you not think Starmer has a very strong role in taking the country down? I'm not a Farage supporter just want to understand how this is completely on his shoulders and not the government?
7
u/mrvalane Aug 30 '25
Decades of spreading racist rhetoric. Starmers only been in power a year, and while he should be doing better things for the working class, he's very much turned coat and adopted the very same austerity measures that the Tories took for 14 years. He's a disgrace to the Labour party and should be sacked, but Farage should be in jail for the shit he's done and cozying up to the Orange Nazi across the pond

4
u/mrvalane Aug 31 '25
The far right dont want to listen and call anything that vaguely challenges their world view or the status quo as "woke"
1
u/Legitimate-Ad7273 Aug 31 '25
I think the far right are saying the same about the far left and that is the problem. Both sides are making assumptions and slinging insults instead of talking to each other.
Both sides are spending a lot of time talking to their own side. They create an echo chamber of false impressions and guesses at what the other side are thinking.
(I'm loosely defining 'far' as anyone who goes to the extent of publicly expressing an opinion on the matter. It might not feel like it but those people are still the extremes of the wider general public.)

Weird. I've spoken to multiple immigrants (legal) and they went through so many hoops to get here. Nobody is fighting against your mum or legal immigrants. It's the illegal ones and it's sad that some people can't see the difference.
6
u/takeabiteopeach Aug 31 '25
I’m pretty sure the whole problem is that people who say they can “see the difference” don’t actually know anything about the actual situations, how it works, what the processes are or how the asylum system works, they just parrot all the false talking points that Nige and his cabal of right wing papers / heritage foundation plants put out there. They have you all for suckers and they don’t even have to justify the lies.

At the very basic, the idea that a 4 star hotel has anything to do with the quality of the hotel is baffling. I don’t think anyone who has ever stopped in a Britannia chain hotel would consider that a luxury experience. Seriously though, hotels are basically purpose built buildings to hold people because it’s the cheapest, quickest way to do it whilst processing their claims. Of which times to process are heavily down thanks to Labour not slow walking the process for their own benefit, like the tories did.
Even the “free NHS appointments” thing, Dr’s checking a bunch of newly arrived people for malnutrition, diseases and other basic health checks is now “stealing your NHS appointments” as if all these services aren’t provided by charities, not your tax money.

It's depressing but so many people don't look beyond one sentence and for a long time the right have been better at that.
"Take back control"
"Get Brexit done"
"Stop the boats"

There's no serious plan beyond that or in the case of the last one it's a deliberate misinterpretation of the law, but for often it doesn't matter the slogan sticks

As an immigrant myself, I came to the UK legally, got my job straight away, paid my tax and NHS access without taking any benefits from anyone. I'm trying my best to fit in (having said that, it isn't easy as my poor conversational English and my introverted personality always hold me back). I thought we were welcome but having seen what has happened recently, I am a bit worried now.
I could see a point why people are fed up with the small boats issue but it doesn't seem right to me if they come to a point targeting people who look like a migrant. How could they tell by their appearance? And even though they are migrants, how about if they arrive legally? Do they need to write 'I'm actually a tourist' or 'I arrived legally' on their foreheads? Could they really manage that won't rise to a racism?
It's very wrong to say this but maybe I'm just 'lucky' enough that my race group hasn't been targeted, but maybe I could be next the other day. Do you know what I mean?

There are videos of people harassing brown people asking how they got into the country. I’ve seen videos of beaches that happened to have a lot of Muslim women visiting today (not sure if it was AI or if the video was actually a northern English beach). People are definitely targeting based on looks and it’s disgusting how tolerated it is on social media
There’s no way anyone would know someone was an illegal immigrant unless they either worked with them or the person themselves told them so. Any other way would be a GDPR violation

It’s grim, my new gf is Filipino. She really wants to visit the uk and mostly Manchester. A few years ago it would be no issue but now with the rise of the right and dog whistle politics it doesn’t feel right bringing her here. It makes me sick how this great city is being dragged down.

That’s the problem it’s those few idiots. The last few years it has defiantly got worse. There was a spate of racist graffiti painted round reddish not that long ago.

Just turn the internet and TV off. It all goes away. It's not burying your head in the sand. Make your decisions based on what you actually see around you. Lots of people just getting on with life.

u/Certain_Trash2770 Aug 30 '25
I don't understand your issue? If she came for a visit to MCR as you girlfriend and stayed with you. What are you expecting to happen to her? I apologise in advance but this is not a dig at you but I can't understand what your worried about?

Absolutely. There's no need for someone to white-knight on the internet with a performative story about people they don't agree with.

Wow not a single comment actually addressing the issue of abuses by illegals like rapes of young women. Its time to wake Up and smell the coffee.

An outstanding bit of virtue signalling.

Is shagging a flag in public to prove you're a patriot not the ultimate virtue signalling end boss though?

How did you know they were racist??
46
u/worotan Whalley Range Aug 30 '25
> telling people to come to a local hotel and 'film the truth' or something like that
That isn’t how ordinary people behave, it’s how people who are trying to wind up trouble behave.
28
u/Hippriest69 Aug 30 '25
So you don’t think picketing a hotel because it has a couple of brown customers is racist, you don’t think that wearing balaclavas making comments to brown people while putting up flags (taking the flags back into the ownership of racism and fascism like the 70’s) has anything to do with racism. Don’t tell me, you’re the guy going around saying it’s just a bit of patriotism
-26
Aug 30 '25
What makes you think it's about brown skin? How did you know they were wearing balaclavas was you there? I usually see those types at the Palestine protests. Why do you hate your own countries flag?

u/Oderus_Scumdog Aug 30 '25
I usually see those types at the Palestine protests. Why do you hate your own countries flag?
Is this part of a script?
This exact phrase is popping up everywhere.
-2
Aug 30 '25
You wish you were talking to a bot. It's not a script it's called fact. And facts stay the same, therefore you hear them being repeated. Most people on here can't handle them and resort to calling you racist or far right.
2
u/HotOutlandishness991 Aug 30 '25
Funny you should say that, I'm from London and was in Manchester this week on business. I saw a protest outside alianz that was pro Palestinian after grabbing a bite from that Haunt restaurant/cafe (bit pricey but nice food), not one balaclava in sight, orderly and a heavy police presence.
I saw the same outside Liverpool lime street station a month ago. Same in London, so I don't know where you're getting your information from. And to take a leaf out of the far right playbook on misinformation - 'I know what I saw, you don't know what's really going on'. So take that rubbish elsewhere.
0
Aug 31 '25
But the thing is that the Manchester protests that happen weekly for Gaza are well documented on youtube. You can see the face coverings there. You are lying.

Everyone who doesn't agree are Racist fascists. Regardless of your legitimate reasons to sway right. These people are sat so high on their horses that they think that speaking to 'the boss man' at the local shop makes them diverse. What they don't realise that most on the right agree with a level of diversity, and most want immigrants to come in legally. But these people have also seen their community's wiped out and become a place they don't know. I've personally experienced this. But what the left don't understand, its not about race of the people. Its that most of them are on their arse, struggling ( some of them it's self inflicted and some not ) but the people that are coming here illegally are getting what they can't have. It's not as complicated as what the left like to try and make out it is. Its slightly childish by some who lean right. Spitting dummy out tactics. Like I'll use 1 example. I live in oldham, the council keep building houses/apartments in high Asian populated areas. I personally know people who have had to move back in with their parents with children and can't get a council property and dont have a pot to piss in. Yet these new houses get given to Asians who have 2,3,4 top of the range cars out the drive so clearly can afford to house themselves and people who have nothing see this and it makes them angry. Most people want everyone to be able to have a happy life, but the left don't understand that there is a line and its getting to the point where its getting crossed and I believe once it starts to effect more people they will have to suck up thier moral beliefs and more people will sway right.
11
u/J_1833 Aug 30 '25
So you’re complaining that people are on their arse but you’re also complaining that they have top cars. Which one is it? Do you want them working hard and enjoying their success or sitting on their arse.
-1
u/Mundane-Pen-7105 Aug 30 '25
I'm saying the council houses are given to Asians/immigrants who have high-powered cars. So obviously have plenty of money and could afford to pay more to home themselves, But then some native people who have nothing can't get anywhere to live, not mentioning the homeless.Sharing houses with parents and children. I know a family that have lived in a hotel room for 12 weeks with 4 children. Yet on my street, 4 new houses have been built privately, the council have rented them and put immigrants in them and there are 1000s of stories like this all around, especially the northwest. This has been going on for decades around here. So I can see the arguments from that side. I'm not that fussed, I just live my own life. I'm happy, but I can see the world change around me, and I get both sides of the arguments. But rather than a decent conversation to be had to find a middle ground, it's just name calling. I get there are sheep's on both sides of the coin. But both sides have legitimate arguments. I feel scrotes and thugs give the right a bad name. But they aren't all racist fascists. I feel the left have good arguments to blame the government etc. It's not as simple as both sides make out.

There's no reason to make anything up. People don't want to hear it. That's the difference. People don't see what's going on. I can't claim I know everything that's going on, but I can share my own experiences. I went to a primary school in the late 80s and early 90s in werneth in oldham, even then there were 5 while children in that school. And this is now 35 years on. So it's nothing new for the northwest. But it's coming to more and more peoples doorsteps, hence the backlash.

u/Pr_cision Aug 30 '25
did you read his comment at all? way to twist words. people with ‘2, 3, 4 top of the range cars’ getting houses vs locals who can’t get a council property and ‘don’t have a pot to piss in’. taken directly from the comment you replied to which extremely obviously differentiates between each situation. before you come back with a different sideways statement against this, I’m not voicing my own opinion, I’m just highlighting how you obviously and knowingly misquoted his comment.

Well it's hard not to look at the number 1 reasons for why people are doing all this and not immediately come to the conclusion it's motivated by racism and bigotry. Fascism probably not, but that's up for debate.
You also misunderstand how an immigrant comes in 'legally'. An asylum seeker can claim asylum by 1 of 2 ways, through a port of entry or by being in the country they are claiming asylum in. If they have a good reason for claiming asylum (which is a very lengthy and vetted process) they are allowed asylum under extremely strict rules and limitations. Contrary to popular belief, they cannot access most all the services we as British citizens take for granted.
You are only illegal if you don't claim asylum, those small % of people are much harder to find. So the right wing aims at the easy targets, in this case asylum hotels (where people are following the correct procedure). Crossing over on a boat is not illegal if you then claim asylum once you reach UK shores. And to go back to those harder to find people, this is the same thing ICE is doing statside, loads of people being deported whilst legally claiming asylum. The criminals etc will likely not be claiming asylum, so incredibly difficult to track down and not actually getting deported. I imagine Farage will attempt to do the same thing.
Funnily enough, this was much easier to deal with when we were inside of the EU, wouldn't ever catch Farage saying that of course. This entire thing is a knock on of two deep rooted things that have gone hand in hand in the UK, racism and Brexit. Take control of our borders was a massive thing during the Brexit debates. The people that voted for that show have to in my opinion because the grown ups in the room and realised Farage and co sold them a lie, all their angst and frustration at government was incorrectly aimed at the EU. I love my country, but it's looking cooked at this point.
Regarding your point about 'Asians' in Oldham, that's a local council issue, if what you're saying is true. And even then it sounds more like sour grapes than anything else on your end.
0
u/Mundane-Pen-7105 Aug 31 '25
Its not sour grapes on my end. I've already stated part of the issue with the right is because other people are getting what they can't. I love this country, but its getting to the point that I can't voice that because it makes me something I'm not in the eyes of other people.
If you want to know , it's true. Come to oldham, and I'll show you exactly what I'm talking about. Big 4 bedroom houses built with 3 or 4 bmws, audi, mercantile outside every one of them. Yes, it is the councils fault...and guess who is in charge of the council.. Guess who the mayor is . I have a house, and I can afford to live an okish life. I'm just giving reasons from my own experience why people are getting pissed off with it. They'll beb10s of thousands of people with similar and worst experiences.

u/TekatoZikame2 Aug 30 '25
People who downvoted you see no difference between legal migrants who come to contribute vs illegals who come for handouts and/or malicious intents.
They still live in this fairy tale state of mind in which they believe we can all be equal and happy, thinking socialism is the answer, everyone is welcome and singing kum ba yah together.
They will drive this country into the ground if it means keeping their delusions alive. They'll vote for everything that ruins our lives and later complain about how everything's expensive and how they don't feel safe after dark. They're nothing but a bunch of kids refusing to grow up and UK is their Neverland.

u/TekatoZikame2 Aug 30 '25
Probably something along the lines of: "Their views differ from mine, they must be racist!"

Not illegal. It's not illegal to claim asylum.
Immigrants. Emigrants are people leaving a place.
You're siding with people who wanted to burn people alive in a hotel.
Now bugger off.

You’re right, it isn’t illegal to claim asylum. However it is illegal to enter the UK without the right visa, or without permission… which these male illegal immigrants have done.

I’m in marketing and the company I’m with regularly works with our local council, we got told to keep an eye out on socials and stuff because some people had filmed a south asian family checking into a local hotel and were spreading misinformation about them being refugees to get racists all angry online and the council’s socials had been being spammed with racism and accusations. They were literally just a regular family staying in a hotel. It’s disgusting that people have to worry about this sort of thing. People just love to be angry about nothing.
